In an era of rapid advances in artificial intelligence, the deployment of robots in organizations is accelerating. Further, robotic capabilities are expanding to serve a broader range of leadership behaviors related to task accomplishment and relationship support. Despite the increasing use of robots in various roles across different industries, research on human-robot collaboration in the workplace is lagging behind. As such, the current research aims to provide a state-of-the-science review and directions for future work in this underdeveloped area. Drawing on current leadership paradigms, we review human-robot collaboration studies from four academic disciplines with a history of publishing such work …
Shareholder Activism: Does Gender Diversity Among Hedge Fund Managers Affect Activism Returns?, Ankita Agarwal
Shareholder Activism: Does Gender Diversity Among Hedge Fund Managers Affect Activism Returns?, Ankita Agarwal
Business Administration Dissertations
Divergent and often contradictory arguments appear in organizational research on the relationship between gender-diverse top management team and performance. In the present study, I integrate several distinct literatures to test a theoretical model that examines the influence of gender diversity among hedge fund executives on the performance of the target firm. Specifically, I argue that gender diversity among hedge fund executives weaken the performance consequences because females are perceived to possess traits less suited for the leadership position, which in turn influence their performance. I further argue that because of stereotypes gender-diverse hedge funds are perceived negatively and hence are …
After Howard, Before The Mirage: The Early Corporate Era Of Nevada Casinos And The Shifting Visual Landscape Of Las Vegas, David Schwartz
After Howard, Before The Mirage: The Early Corporate Era Of Nevada Casinos And The Shifting Visual Landscape Of Las Vegas, David Schwartz
Executive Vice President & Provost Faculty Publications
Las Vegas casino history is often divided into the “classic” or “Rat Pack” era and the “corporate” or “megaresort era.” Classic Vegas starts in the early 1950s as the burgeoning gaming industry established itself on the Strip and can be said to end in 1967, when Howard Hughes’ purchase of five casinos signaled the start of a new regime. The megaresort era started in 1989 with the opening of The Mirage, and the time between Hughes’ arrival and Steve Wynn’s game-changer is typically brushed over as a mere precursor to the massive changes of the 1990s.

The large, positive correlation between speaking time and leader emergence is well-established. As such, some authors have argued for a ``babble hypothesis'' of leadership, suggesting that only the quantity of speaking, not its quality, determines leader emergence. However, previous tests of this notion may have been problematic. Some studies have asserted a causal effect of speaking time on leader emergence based on experimental studies, but have limited participant communication, access to reliable information, or both. Other studies have used more ecologically valid designs, but have not always controlled for relevant participant traits or roles, suggesting potential endogeneity effects. Testing the …

Getting Them In The Door: A Study Of Programming Within Boys & Girls Clubs Of Vermont, Hannah Macon

While it is clear that strong, evidence-based youth-centered programming has a significant impact within an organization, there are often challenges and barriers which can significantly impact these programs. To understand these barriers more fully, it is important to understand the context through which these programs are being operated in, and by analyzing the perceptions surrounding what makes a program successful or sustainable over time. The Boys and Girls Club of Brattleboro is a local non profit which strives to grow and increase its impact on the youth members of the community. The purpose of this research was to collect and …
Academic Self-Concept As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Gender And Self-Reported Leadership Ability, Jeffrey A. Miles, Stefanie E. Naumann
Academic Self-Concept As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Gender And Self-Reported Leadership Ability, Jeffrey A. Miles, Stefanie E. Naumann
Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles
One of the most frequently reported student learning outcomes on college campuses is leadership ability. Thus, identifying the factors associated with leadership development is an important area for research. Previous studies have found mixed results in the relationship between gender and leadership perceptions. The current study proposes that academic self-concept intervenes in the relationship between gender and leadership, and helps to explain these earlier mixed findings. In a study of 597 undergraduate students from a private west coast university, we found that academic self-concept fully mediated the relationship between gender and self-reported leadership ability. Implications for research and practice are …

Supply Chain Management Has Changed The World Economy, Michael Gravier
Marketing Department Faculty Journal Articles
I’m making a bold assertion: global supply chain management practices are single-handedly holding down inflation across the globe. Economists have been asking for a while now why inflation stubbornly remains below “ideal” levels, despite uses of various policy levers. There is some evidence that it could be due to the ability of modern global supply chains to continue to find new and cheaper sources of production—the power of competition—coupled with old fashioned managerial innovation.

A Study Of The Impact Of Health Information Quality On Care Delivery Quality And Satisfaction From The Care Provider’S Perspective, Rashid Manzar
Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations
The US healthcare system is rapidly adopting health information technologies (IT) in its quest to improve patient safety and deliver high quality care at a lower cost. As healthcare providers increasingly rely on health IT in caring for their patients, there is a corresponding increase in the impact of health IT on the outcome of care delivery. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of empirical studies on how health IT quality influences healthcare outcome. Using a comprehensive framework based on Work Systems Theory, a research model was developed to study the impact of health information quality on care delivery outcome and …
Three Essays On The Role Of Sales Strategy In Salesperson Performance, Eddie Inyang
Three Essays On The Role Of Sales Strategy In Salesperson Performance, Eddie Inyang
Marketing Dissertations
The importance of the sales force to implementing organizational strategy has been widely acknowledged in both the academic and practitioner literature. With organizations spending over $800 billion a year on their sales forces, when the activities of the sales force become uncoupled from organizational strategy, it results in direct and indirect costs to the firm. Despite the importance of the sales force to implementing organizational strategy, there have been scant empirical studies in the academic literature on the role of salespeople in implementing strategy. In this dissertation, three essays examine the performance outcomes of salesperson implementation of sales strategy, along …
