Neurolipofuscin Is A Measure Of Age In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, In Florida, Kerry Elizabeth Maxwell

Biology Theses

Accurate age estimates for the commercially-important Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, would greatly enhance analyses of life history and population dynamics. Previous estimates of their age based on size and growth may be inaccurate because of variable growth in the wild. An established technique for aging crustaceans – histologically-determined lipofuscin content in the nervous system – was used on lobsters reared in the laboratory for up to five years. We verified the presence of lipofuscin in eyestalk neural tissue and described its distribution in cell cluster A of the hemiellipsoid body. Neurolipofuscin content of both sexes increased linearly over the …

Effect Of Gibberellic Acid Spray On Performance Of Tomato, M.Masroor A. Khan, Champa Gautam, Firoz Mohammad, Manzer H. Siddiqui, M. Naeem, M. Nasir Khan Jan 2006

Effect Of Gibberellic Acid Spray On Performance Of Tomato, M.Masroor A. Khan, Champa Gautam, Firoz Mohammad, Manzer H. Siddiqui, M. Naeem, M. Nasir Khan

Turkish Journal of Biology

A pot experiment was performed according to a factorial randomized design at Aligarh to study the effect of 4 levels of gibberellic acid spray (0, 10-8, 10-6 and 10-4 M GA3) on the growth, leaf-NPK content, yield and quality parameters of 2 tomato cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), namely Hyb-SC-3 and Hyb-Himalata. Irrespective of its concentration, spray of gibberellic acid proved beneficial for most parameters, especially in the case of Hyb-SC-3.

Growth And Population Assessment Of Spotted Bass (Micropterus Punctulatus) In Beaver, Table Rock, And Bull Shoals Lakes, Northern Arkansas-Southern Missouri, Jeremy Troy Risley Jan 2006

Growth And Population Assessment Of Spotted Bass (Micropterus Punctulatus) In Beaver, Table Rock, And Bull Shoals Lakes, Northern Arkansas-Southern Missouri, Jeremy Troy Risley

MSU Graduate Theses

Little research has been conducted on spotted bass, Micropterus punctulatus, even though it is a popular recreational fish. Most previous research was on young-of-the-year fish and interactions among other species in reservoirs, with little research on adult spotted base in the Ozarks region or other regions of the United States. The objective of this study was to compare the growth and population characteristics of spotted bass within and among Beaver, Bull Shoals and Table Rock Lacks. Growth, abundance, and conditions within and among reservoirs were similar. However, spotted bass in Beaver Lake did not reach as great lengths as those …

Cuscuta spp. (dodders) are rootless, holoparasitic herbs with filiform stems attached to the host by numerous haustoria. In Canada, Cuscuta gronovii is the most common native species of the genus followed by Cuscuta campestris and C. umbrosa. Cuscuta epithymum and C. epilinum, both introduced species in Canada, occur occasionally. Infestation by Cuscuta spp. can result in serious yield losses and dodders are listed as noxious weeds in British Columbia, Ontario and Québec, and as restricted weeds in Alberta. These plants have evolved special adaptations to ensure their success: germination occurs late in the season when potential hosts are …

The Effect Of Ferrum (Feso_4) On Culture Mushroom: Pleurotus Ostreatus (Jacq.) Kumm., Abdunnasir Yildiz, Ömer Faruk Yeşi̇l Jan 2006

The Effect Of Ferrum (Feso_4) On Culture Mushroom: Pleurotus Ostreatus (Jacq.) Kumm., Abdunnasir Yildiz, Ömer Faruk Yeşi̇l

Turkish Journal of Biology

This study was conducted on the growth, ratio of protein and cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus on local celluosic wastes in different concentrations of the ferrous (Fe^{++}). It was observed that Fe^{++} had effect on the formation and growth of the basidiocarps. The shortest and longest period of basidiocarps formation and growth were obtained in 100 ppm and 300 ppm Fe^{++}, respectively. The higher total amount of yield was found for 100 ppm Fe^{++} when compared with control, 200 and 300 ppm Fe^{++}. Significant (P < 0.05) difference was found between the control and 100 ppm Fe^{++}, but the best yield was obtained. Mushroom protein ratio of all concentrations of ferrous (Fe^{++}) were found to be lower than control.
