Artificial Intelligence And The Ethics Of Self-Learning Robots, Shannon Vallor, George A. Bekey
Artificial Intelligence And The Ethics Of Self-Learning Robots, Shannon Vallor, George A. Bekey
Philosophy
The convergence of robotics technology with the science of artificial intelligence ( or AI) is rapidly enabling the development of robots that emulate a wide range of intelligent human behaviors.1 Recent advances in machine learning techniques have produced significant gains in the ability of artificial agents to perform or even excel in activities formerly thought to be the exclusive province of human intelligence, including abstract problem-solving, perceptual recognition, social interaction, and natural language use. These developments raise a host of new ethical concerns about the responsible design, manufacture, and use of robots enabled with artificial intelligence-particularly those equipped with self-learning …

University Of Maine Career Center Annual Report 2016-2017, Crisanne Kadamus Blackie
General University of Maine Publications
The Career Center has the privilege of making a difference is someone’s life everyday. We don’t always know when we make that difference but we do know that planting the seeds of change will have an impact. We often hear from students that they met us during a class presentation their first year and remembered that we could help them or that one of our counseling staff helped them to explore a new major, find an internship that changed their path or helped them to find a full-time position or graduate program that launched their career. It is our pleasure …

Reading Journals: Preview Assignments That Promote Student Engagement, Productive Struggle, And Ultimate Success In Undergraduate Mathematics Courses, Sarah Nelson
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2017
We spend lots of time searching for the best textbook for students. We want our students to have a reliable and useful resource to reference, as needed. We even ask them to read over certain material before classes. Often, however, we fail to guide our students in how to read the text productively. Incorporating reading journals into your classes is an excellent way to simultaneously develop your students' ability to read mathematical text and capitalize on what the students already have to offer. In this presentation, we will look at how reading journals motivate students in a variety of mathematics …

Media Coverage Of Tennessee's Amendment 1, Hayley A. Brundige
Media Coverage Of Tennessee's Amendment 1, Hayley A. Brundige
Baker Scholar Projects
In 2014, Tennesseans went to the polls to vote on a controversial abortion amendment to the state constitution that was years in the making. Two organizations – Yes on 1 and No on One – spent millions of dollars on advertising to insert their rhetoric into the public debate and sway voter opinion. To some, Amendment 1 represented a chance for Tennesseans to take back control over abortion regulations in the state and protect women and girls. To others, the measure went too far and constituted unnecessary government interference into private decisions. For many, the issue set two deeply-held values …

How Trump Won: Media And The Silent Majority In The 2016 Us Presidential Election, Joshua K. Miller
How Trump Won: Media And The Silent Majority In The 2016 Us Presidential Election, Joshua K. Miller
Senior Honors Theses
Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign ended in victory because of two powerful forces: enormous media advantage gained through sensationalism and a strong coalition made up of evangelicals, pragmatic conservatives, and the silent majority. The work of Neil Postman sheds light on the underlying cultural foundation of Trump’s media advantage. Parallels from the video game industry explain how intentional sensationalism played into Trump’s success in the primary process. Evangelicals and pragmatic conservatives joined Trump’s coalition in spite of his scandals, and Eric Hoffer’s work helps explain his appeal to the silent majority. Ultimately, the patterns of Trump’s victory yield significant learning …

Cross Crossings Cautiously: Uses Of African American Vernacular English In American Literature, Emily Crnkovich
Cross Crossings Cautiously: Uses Of African American Vernacular English In American Literature, Emily Crnkovich
English Honors Projects
This project uses sociolinguistics to theorize the use of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in literature across three time periods: the Antebellum era, the post-bellum/Reconstruction era, and the Harlem Renaissance. Different dialects of English encode different power structures, and in order to interrogate those power structures I track how white and black authors represent the language of African American characters on the page and how audiences interpret that language. I find that African American authors tend to embrace the variability and diversity of natural language better than their white counterparts, whose use of literary dialect often falls into essentialist clichés.
Vowel Reduction In Word-Final Position By Early And Late Spanish-English Bilinguals, Emily Byers, Mehmet Yavas
Vowel Reduction In Word-Final Position By Early And Late Spanish-English Bilinguals, Emily Byers, Mehmet Yavas
All Faculty
Vowel reduction is a prominent feature of American English, as well as other stress-timed languages. As a phonological process, vowel reduction neutralizes multiple vowel quality contrasts in unstressed syllables. For bilinguals whose native language is not characterized by large spectral and durational differences between tonic and atonic vowels, systematically reducing unstressed vowels to the central vowel space can be problematic. Failure to maintain this pattern of stressed-unstressed syllables in American English is one key element that contributes to a ?foreign accent? in second language speakers. Reduced vowels, or ?schwas,? have also been identified as particularly vulnerable to the co-articulatory effects …
