Interactive Cabaret And Amahl And The Night Visitors, Usu Opera, Errik Hood, Dallas Heaton Dec 2017

Interactive Cabaret And Amahl And The Night Visitors, Usu Opera, Errik Hood, Dallas Heaton

All Music Department Programs

Much has changed since 1951, when Gian Carlo Menotti composed Amahl and the Night Visitors as the first opera ever written for television. Amahl and the Night Visitors is the story of a miracle that occurs when the Magi stop on their journey to see the Baby Jesus, and it has been a perennial favorite since its first live telecast more than 65 years ago. Despite its lasting popularity, some of the elements of this stunning work have not aged well. Referring to Amahl, the disabled young boy at the center of the story, as ‘crippled’, the calling out of …

The New Woman Narrating The Histor(Ies) Of The Feminist Movement, Francesca Sawaya Dec 2017

The New Woman Narrating The Histor(Ies) Of The Feminist Movement, Francesca Sawaya

Arts & Sciences Book Chapters

To dip into the scholarship about the New Woman is to be puzzled by the extensive focus on and the strong disagreement about chronology. Why do some scholars offer such a wide range of years for the New Woman, and others such a narrow range? And why do the dates - whatever they may be - diverge so widely? What becomes clear is that date matter not because the New Woman can be easily periodized - after all, there are no legislative or political milestones that mark her entrance or exit from the public stage - but because she herself …

From The Romans To The Normans On The English Renaissance Stage, Lisa Hopkins Nov 2017

From The Romans To The Normans On The English Renaissance Stage, Lisa Hopkins

Early Drama, Art, and Music

This book examines the late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century engagement with a crucial part of Britain's past, the period between the withdrawal of the Roman legions and the Norman Conquest. This was a period that saw both Arthur and Alfred, as well as Hengist, Horsa, and Canute. The country was converted to Christianity and saw successive waves of invasions by Angles, Jutes, and Danes, which left both a mark on the language and a record in the physical landscape. By its end, the British Isles had been transformed beyond recognition, and yet a number of early modern plays suggest an …

Drama And Sermon In Late Medieval England: Performance, Authority, Devotion, Charlotte Steenbrugge Nov 2017

Drama And Sermon In Late Medieval England: Performance, Authority, Devotion, Charlotte Steenbrugge

Early Drama, Art, and Music

This is the first full-length study of the interrelation between sermons and vernacular religious drama in late medieval England. It investigates how these genres worked as media for public learning, how they combined this didactic aim with literary exigencies, and how the plays in particular acquired and reflected a position of authority. The interrelation between sermons and vernacular drama, formerly assumed relatively uncritically to be a close one, is addressed from a variety of angles, including historical connections, performative aspects, and the portrayal of the sacrament of penance. The analysis challenges the common assumption that Middle English religious drama is …

The Jeu D'Adam: Ms Tours 927 And The Provenance Of The Play, Christophe Chaguinian Nov 2017

The Jeu D'Adam: Ms Tours 927 And The Provenance Of The Play, Christophe Chaguinian

Early Drama, Art, and Music

The Jeu d'Adam is an Anglo-Norman mid-twelfth-century representation of several biblical stories, including the temptation of Adam and Eve and the subsequent fall, Cain and Abel, and the prophets Isaiah and Daniel. Its framework builds on the Latin responses of the mass during the liturgical season of Septuagesima, from before Lent to Easter. This collection of essays explores whether this early play was monastic or secular, its Anglo-Norman character, and the text's musical provenance.

Le Sorelle Macaluso (The Sisters Macaluso), Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2017-2018 Women Innovators in the Performing Arts

Once upon a time in Sicily, there were seven sisters who lived in Palermo. An untimely death plunges the sisters into their own divine tragedy, this one created by Emma Dante, a ferocious Sicilian theater artist and award-winning writer, actor, producer and director of plays, operas and films. In her raucous, poetic fable, these vibrant, funny sisters are as likely to throw shoes or crucifixes at one another as they are to share secrets. They command the stage, quarrelling and reminiscing, in this empathetic and uncompromising look at the chains of family and tradition.

Cyrano De Bergerac Nov 2017

Cyrano De Bergerac

Taylor Theatre Playbills

The playbill for Taylor University’s performance of Cyrano de Bergerac, based on the translation written by Anthony Burgess of the play written by Edmund Rostand.

Performed November 10-12, 17-19, 2017 at the Mitchell Theatre.

Dashing, proud, and romantic, Cyrano is one of the most memorable figures in theatre history. Known throughout Paris for his unmatched bravery and the charm of his verse, poet Cyrano de Bergerac has one problem—his enormous nose. During an age of gallant musketeers and extravagant lifestyles, this beautiful soul is damned by his marred appearance. Not one to give up, Cyrano joins forces with the handsome …

Miscellaneous Publications – Mexican

The unknown author of this 1846 publication asks the question: “Would the invasion and conquest of Mexico by the United States … be right?” A series of questions surrounding the annexation of Texas and the justification for going to war against Mexico are asked and answered. They included, in part: Is the war right? Is it expedient? Was the revolution of Texas right? Was the annexation of Texas right? Concluding that the answers to these questions were yes, a second, independent justification was proffered relating to the injuries Mexico was inflicting on the United States of America commerce. Concerns about …
