Jewish Cultural Aspirations, Ruth Weisberg
Jewish Cultural Aspirations, Ruth Weisberg
The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review
In the late nineteenth century in Europe and to some extent in the United States, the Jewish upper middle class—particularly the more affluent families—began to enter the cultural spheres of public life, especially in major cities such as Vienna, Berlin, Paris, New York, and London. While many aspects of society were closed to them, theater, the visual arts, music, and art publication were far more inviting, especially if they involved challenging aspects of modernity that might be less attractive to Gentile society. Jews had far less to lose in embracing new forms of expression, and they were very attracted to …

A Ceremony Of Carols, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University
2012-2013 Exceptions Rule: No Compromise
Described as one of Britain’s most musical choreographers, Alston has used works by a diverse range of composers to explore how choreography can animate the spirit of music. Featured in this program will be the American premiere of Alston’s most recent work, A Ceremony of Carols, choreographed to Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece for voice and harp. The music will be performed live by an all-female choir conducted by Montclair State’s Heather J. Buchanan, accompanied by harpist André Tarantiles. Also included will be Alston’s Roughcut and Unfinished Business, set to the music of Steve Reich and Mozart, respectively.

O! Call Back Yesterday, Joy Trott
O! Call Back Yesterday, Joy Trott
Books
When VE Day was announced in 1945, twenty-one year old Joy Trott was halfway across the Atlantic Ocean with a newborn daughter who had yet to meet her father. Armed with a trunk and a pram, Joyce embarked on a new life alongside her Canadian husband.
In her memoirs, Trott recounts her early childhood in Depression-era Great Britain and the death of her parents, her life as a teenaged volunteer in the Auxiliary Territorial Service of the British Army, and her immigration to Canada as a young war bride. Interwoven into this personal narrative are anecdotes and reflections on class, …

Colours in the Storm is the musical by Jim Betts about the life – and mysterious death – of one of Canada’s best loved painters, Tom Thomson. Thomson’s landscapes of Algonquin Park - including "The West Wind", "The Jack Pine" and "Northern River" - are among the most famous paintings ever done in Canada. But Thomson is perhaps as famous for the controversy of his death as he is for the strength of his paintings. He died in mysterious circumstances in the waters of Canoe Lake, and in the 75 years since his death there has been endless speculation about …

Tonight’s performance represents a fundamental principle of the work we do both in Logan and at all of the campuses of Utah State University: expert faculty working side-by-side with their students in a professional setting. Logan Canyon Winds, now in its 21st season as USU’s faculty wind quintet, is a shining example of this tradition. One of the hallmarks of a Utah State University education is the community of learners—students, citizens, and faculty—that comes together in pursuit of excellence.
