The purpose of this thesis is to provide an in-depth look at the design process for the Nebraska Repertory Theater’s production of Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, which performed in November 2022. This process includes research that facilitated early design conversations, documentation that relayed information necessary for implementation, and additional materials typically used as reference for a lighting designer. This thesis includes research images, hand-drawn renderings, previsualization, light plots, lighting paperwork, and production photos of the final product.

This paper explores themes of duality, subversion and humanity through a critical analysis of the first season of HBO’s Carnivàle. Production elements like costuming and lighting serve as key points of examination, as does the show’s writing through representation of various religious beliefs and faith in mystical, mythological forces, inspired by real-world ideologies yet unique to the world of Carnivàle. The three categories of costuming, lighting and religion demonstrate Carnivàle’s obsession with visual storytelling, apt for story told in a visual medium.

This thesis describes the research and production processes of the lighting design for the play, Mrs. Mannerly by Jeffrey Hatcher, performed in the Studio Theatre, repertory style, from July 19th through August 10th at the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at the University of Nebraska. Mrs. Mannerly was directed by Rob Urbinati. Clayton Van Winkle acted as the production's lighting designer, Laurel Shoemaker designed the set, Sharon Sobel designed the costumes, Mike Smith designed the sound, Erica King acted as the props mistress, and Chris Stepanek was the acting technical director.
