Working For Peanuts: Labor, Geography, And Class Composition In The American Circus Industry, 1872-1938, William James Hansard May 2022

Working For Peanuts: Labor, Geography, And Class Composition In The American Circus Industry, 1872-1938, William James Hansard

History Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on class composition in the traveling circus in the Gilded Age (1870s-1900s), the Progressive Era (1890s-1910s), and the New Era (1920s-1930s). American circuses became industrial operations beginning in the 1870s under the leadership of P.T. Barnum and his business partners, and within a few years, they had become the most important form of entertainment in the United States. By the turn of the twentieth century, the major industrial circuses employed around 1,200 people each and traveled the country in what amounted to a mobile factory town. However, up to this point, collective action by circus workers was …

Fashion Design and Merchandising Faculty Scholarship

The Symbolism of Women’s Suffrage Dress: Suits of subversion or paragons of persuasion? I am a professional apparel designer who has worked both in the clothing industry as well as in academia. My passion is creating patterns which I then use to cut and construct amazing designs. Recently I began researching historic garment design and construction which led me to creating historically inspired recreations of era specific designs. This new-found creative outlet results in the additional benefit of being able to be used for educational purposes by bringing historic dress alive for our students. The research behind these designs as …

Forgiveness, Freedom And The Inmate Issue, Taylor Smith May 2020

Forgiveness, Freedom And The Inmate Issue, Taylor Smith

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Forgiveness Freedom and the Inmate Issue:

It is no secret that the United States has a mass incarceration problem. The war on drugs, traffic violations, and the Three Strikes Law, are just pieces of the systems being used to repeatedly place people behind bars. What we are facing now as a society is the repercussions of reintegrating under educated, digitally literate, mentally abandoned individuals back into society. In addition to post jail operatives like parole fees, fines and probation scheduling are re-sentencing these individuals into a society they no longer relate to, that socially struggle to adapt to and that …

Sallie Brooke Capps: Education Trailblazer In North Texas, Joshua Vincent Chanin May 2018

Sallie Brooke Capps: Education Trailblazer In North Texas, Joshua Vincent Chanin

History Theses

This thesis closely examines the life of Sallie Brooke Capps (1864-1946), a liberal-feminist progressive reformer who passionately advocated for better academic opportunities for young white women and children in North Texas during the first-half of the twentieth century. At a time when women seldom held leadership positions and instead trained to lead lives as domestic household managers, Capps found a way to combine both. Moreover, her support for the education profession opened the door for many young women who came after her to attend college and become successful teachers and administrators. As the vice-president of the Texas Congress of Mothers …

The Dilemma Of Defining Academic Quality, Norman L. Jones, Linda George Apr 2017

The Dilemma Of Defining Academic Quality, Norman L. Jones, Linda George

History Faculty Publications

Academic quality is part of virtually every university strategic plan as well as the central focus of accreditation standards. In the past, this has often been defined by a series of input measures such as the percentage of faculty with terminal degrees. Today, the call is to identify outcome measures – but which ones? This session will discuss how institutions and systems can define and be held accountable for academic quality in a sea of uncertainty with multiple constituents, and the role of the provost in meeting that challenge.

In Pueblo's Wake; Flawed Leadership And The Role Of Juche In The Capture Of The Uss Pueblo, James A. Duermeyer Dec 2016

In Pueblo's Wake; Flawed Leadership And The Role Of Juche In The Capture Of The Uss Pueblo, James A. Duermeyer

History Theses

On January 23, 1968, North Korea attacked and seized an American Navy spy ship, the USS Pueblo. In the process, one American sailor was mortally wounded and another ten crew members were injured, including the ship's commanding officer. The crew was held for eleven months in a North Korean prison. Today, the ship remains in North Korea as a gray, steel museum, glorifying the success of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's Navy in its struggle against the imperialist American aggressors. This thesis examines two primary question: How could the capture and retention of a U.S. Navy warship by a …

Rising Assertiveness Versus Peaceful Development: Making Sense Of China’S Ambivalent International Behavior, Lukas K. Danner Nov 2016

Rising Assertiveness Versus Peaceful Development: Making Sense Of China’S Ambivalent International Behavior, Lukas K. Danner

Dr. Lukas K. Danner

In the past few years, especially after the 2008 global financial crisis, China has become more assertive, not just in its military posture but also in its diplomatic affairs and economic interactions. Despite this rising assertiveness, China’s grand strategy officially remains that of ‘Peaceful Development.’ In consequence, scholars have disagreed about the trajectory of China’s grand strategy in light of its often ambivalent behavior. To explain this ambivalence, this article will take a closer empirical look at  two important developments regarding China’s international affairs: The softening on China’s preoccupation with territorial integrity and sovereignty has been exhibited in taking sides …

¿Mi Tierra, También? Mexican American Civil Rights In Fort Worth, 1940-1990s, Cecilia N. Sanchez Hill

History Theses

This thesis focuses on the city of Fort Worth during the second half of the twentieth-century and provides an analysis for how the struggles of the Mexican American population were shaped by the long history of discrimination throughout Texas and the Southwest, and most importantly highlights the World War II veterans who were the catalysts for change for their growing community. A 1969 Mexican American Leadership Conference not only revealed the divide between the Mexican American Generation and Chicano Generation activists in Fort Worth, but also exposed the misconceptions members of various organizations had about each other. Gilbert Garcia’s creation …

Teaching Creative Writing In The Age Of Common Core, Casey Unverferth

Honors Projects

The core of my honors project includes a 12-day unit plan for teaching creative writing in the form of narratives. I created lessons for 12 days, created the materials needed for each day, and created a website where my work has been displayed for my future classroom. The website link is: teachcreatewrite.weebly.com. All materials for the unit plan are broken down by day, and I chose to expand upon 3 days in a short lesson plan template.
