The Morphology Of The City Of Jerusalem And The Israeli Strategies To Judaize The City, Muamal Alaaaldeen Ibrahim Apr 2026

The Morphology Of The City Of Jerusalem And The Israeli Strategies To Judaize The City, Muamal Alaaaldeen Ibrahim

Iraqi Journal of Architecture and Planning

The Jewish state worked swiftly and effectively to erase and deny the Arab and Islamic past of Jerusalem, giving it a Jewish character within strategic plans at the regional level, encompassing Greater Jerusalem and the Old City. The Arabs failed to develop any plan to counter the Zionist scheme, and most Arab studies and research addressing the topic were historical, descriptive, and selective. This research examines the planning principles and urban references of Jerusalem, comparing them with other Arab and Islamic cities to refute Zionist claims regarding the origins and historical context of the holy city. The study reveals a …

Crafting Power, Piety, And Memory: The Sabil-Maktab Of 'Abd Al-Rahman Katkhuda In Bayn Al-Qasrayn, Cairo (1157 Ah/ 1744 Ce), Nehal Hany Al-Shamy Feb 2026

Crafting Power, Piety, And Memory: The Sabil-Maktab Of 'Abd Al-Rahman Katkhuda In Bayn Al-Qasrayn, Cairo (1157 Ah/ 1744 Ce), Nehal Hany Al-Shamy

Theses and Dissertations

Among hundreds of sabil-maktabs in Cairo, the one ʿAbd al-Rahman Katkhuda built in Bayn al-Qasrayn in 1157/1744 stands out as an iconic jewel, rising to be a symbol of the city itself. However, this sabil is more than just a beautiful building, for its beauty was only a means to channel political, commemorative, and spiritual connotations. This thesis is concerned with analyzing the raisons d’être of constructing the sabil through investigating the historical and political circumstances that influenced its patron at the time, and their reflections in the artistic choices he made. I argue that crafting the sabil as a …

Ottoman Wikālas In Cairo: Islamic Architecture Beyond The Mosque, Yumna Moussa Jan 2026

Ottoman Wikālas In Cairo: Islamic Architecture Beyond The Mosque, Yumna Moussa

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis traces one of the largest architectural typologies in Cairo: the wikāla, a type of urban caravanserai unique to Egypt. Estimated to have reached more than five hundred buildings by the 18th century, the wikāla was the building of choice for most patrons in Ottoman Cairo. This study initially investigates the evolution of commercial architecture within the Islamic city. It then explores the defining architectural features of Cairene wikālas built between the 16th and 18th centuries—their plans, decorative/iconographic programs, and urban distribution—based on waqfiyyas, chronicles, travelers’ accounts, and photographic archives. Since many of …

The Principles Of Islamic Moral Philosophy And The Possibility Of Re-Conceptualizing Classical Islamic Aesthetics Of Architecture, Muhammad Feteha Jan 2025

The Principles Of Islamic Moral Philosophy And The Possibility Of Re-Conceptualizing Classical Islamic Aesthetics Of Architecture, Muhammad Feteha

Theses and Dissertations

This study is primarily concerned with the intersection of the moral and aesthetic theories of Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 1111). Al-Ghazālī’s theory of aesthetics has been the subject of thorough scholarly investigations and diverse interpretations in the field of Islamic art history since the 1940s. This thesis critiques the premises upon which the use of al-Ghazālī’s writings in studies of Islamic art and architecture were built. It suggests that they lead to what could be described as “the contradiction of unethical beauty.” To overcome this contradiction, it offers a comprehensive interpretation of al-Ghazālī’s aesthetics through analyzing the concept ḥusn in …

Design And Delivery Of National Housing In The Uae: An Alternative Approach, Basem Eid Mohamed, Mohamed Elkaftangui, Rana Zureikat, Rund Hiyasat

All Works

The provision of national housing to citizens in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is considered a crucial topic. Over the past four decades, the process of developing national housing has emerged into multiple housing programs and schemes, all with the same aim of offering affordable and high-quality housing to citizens, in addition to meeting the needs of local families regarding spatial configurations while maintaining cultural values. However, despite all these efforts, the question has always remained: are the offered housing practices suited for family needs, socioeconomic trends, and environmental challenges? This study aims to offer an alternative approach for the …

From Roundabout To Roundabout: Tahrir Square (1869- 2021), Mariam Abdelazim Aug 2021

From Roundabout To Roundabout: Tahrir Square (1869- 2021), Mariam Abdelazim

Dissertations

Tahrir Square not only represents a symbol of liberation but also reflects the modern history of Egypt. Its several physical changes signify the rise and fall of the monarchy, colonialism, modernism, nationalism, capitalism, echoing a constantly changing definition of the Egyptian public space. And while the surrounding façades physically define the square, either the authorities or the public control its activities.

Khedive Ismail founded the square around 1869 as a roundabout on his “Paris along the Nile” modern city. Between 1882 and 1947, the site became the barracks’ location for the British troops who colonized Egypt. In 1952, an Egyptian …

Architecture Of Utopian Social Battery In The Neoliberal Cities, Al Hadi Taha, Marwan Halabi, Hiba Mohsen, Bahaa El Dine Abou El Khoudoud

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

During the span of the recorded history, there has been always a continual eagerness to reach what is seen as a perfect place, this perfection has been later called utopia or the ‘non-existent place’ in Greek. Eventually, the perception of utopia differs between people, groups, eras, and many other factors, it’s a simultaneous desire of improving the current conditions. One of these perceived utopias was Neo-liberalism, which is an economic philosophy with ideas linked with free-market, economic liberalism, and capitalism. Indeed, this utopia has turned into a dystopia in which this philosophy became a prevalent mode of producing cities that …

Hawsh Al-Basha: The Royal Cemetery In Cairo, Mai Mohamed Kolkailah Jan 2021

Hawsh Al-Basha: The Royal Cemetery In Cairo, Mai Mohamed Kolkailah

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on Hawsh al-Basha, the royal cemetery near the mausoleum of Imam al-Shafi‘i, which is arguably one of the most intriguing architectural moments in Ottoman Cairo. Firstly, the historiography of Hawsh al-Basha is examined carefully in order to situate the mausoleum temporally and geographically. Secondly, for a critical rewriting of the historical narrative, this study systematically cross-references contemporary sources with nineteenth-century travel accounts, among other material evidence, to effectively reconstruct the complicated building chronology of Hawsh al-Basha and reassess when the mausoleum was built. Then, the study surveys the various categories of ornamentation employed at the royal cemetery, …

Contemporary Mosque Architecture In Egypt And Iran (A Comparative Analysis), Hosam Ali Jan 2021

Contemporary Mosque Architecture In Egypt And Iran (A Comparative Analysis), Hosam Ali

Theses and Dissertations

I would like to introduce my research with this quote from Ahmed Hamid’s book Hassan Fathy and Continuity in Islamic Art and Architecture: As a student of Architecture at Cairo University’s Faculty of Engineering, I was ashamed that we Egyptians and Muslims had nothing in our syllabi that could be considered comparable to the genius of the west. Islamic architecture was omitted from the curriculum as being of no interest value for modern architects. It bothered me when I found that Egyptians believed the image propagated by some orientalists that Islam, and by implication its art and architecture, was backward.1 …

Quality Of Life Between Working And Non-Workingpalestinian Women, Olfat Mahmoud

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

This study tackles a number of variables that form the core of positive psychology: self-efficacy, optimism, the estimations of physical health, mental health, happiness and satisfaction, in addition to the variable of healthy behavior which is deemed a new-comer in Arab studies. The study, thus, seeks to determine the differences between these variable in the light of sex, as well as the relation between healthy behavior and the variables of the study. It also seeks to identify the factors that can be extracted from the correlation coefficients among the scales used, and finally to identify the variables that may predict …

A Walk Through A Lost Treasure: The House Of Shaykh Al-Sadat Al-Wafaâ'Iyya, Norhan Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

Cairo “having turned into a provincial town under the Ottoman rule - lost the glorious status it had enjoyed during the Mamluk period. That affected the functions of the city resulting in changes of its architecture. In particular, stripped of its role of the capital and military center, Cairo metamorphosed into a hub of commercial activities attracting mainly merchants and travelers. Such a transformation affected the domestic architecture of the Ottoman period. According to Andre Raymond, the wealthier Ottoman houses were arranged near the center, and the poor were located further away. The socio-economic levels of inhabitants of Cairo under …

Empire And Ruins In Nineteenth-Century Egypt, Adin Becker Jan 2020

Empire And Ruins In Nineteenth-Century Egypt, Adin Becker

Pomona Senior Theses

Modern Egypt began as a site for academic exploration and exploitation. Its tremendous archeological riches, indisputable centrality within the world of Islam, and complex multifaceted cultural makeup have piqued the interests of academics worldwide. For centuries, scholars have fantasized about “what lay beyond the water,” a land where they knew “colossal relics of the oldest-known human civilization were concentrated along the Nile in crumbling piles between two vast, usurping deserts, amidst a modern population that professed faith in Islam.”1 Absent material motives, however, Egypt long remained a land of mystery for the West, ripe for discovery and exploration. Egypt’s obscurity …

Haa 372 World Cities: Cairo, Mother Of The World, Mark Delancey

Course Website Archive

This course will examine the urban development and architectural heritage of Greater Cairo, Egypt since the reconstruction of the fortress of Babylon in the Roman period, through the establishment of Cairo itself in 969, and until the present. Cairo has always been a crossroads of cultures, set between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. It has been home to significant Jewish, Christian and Muslim populations who have been impacted by the various ruling dynasties who have held sway there, including the Byzantines, early Islamic rulers, Tulunids, Shi'i Fatimids, and later Sunni Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans. In the 20th century, rapid …

Women, Architecture And Representation In Mamluk Cairo, Amina Karam

Theses and Dissertations

Of the hundreds of documented religious monuments of Mamluk Cairo, known for its intense and often competitive building activity, about twenty are known to be associated with women, at least ten of which still exist in some form. This thesis discusses women's participation in the Mamluk culture of patronage and construction, looking at monuments associated with women not only as a body of work but as the architecture of individual players within the larger building context of Mamluk Cairo. Relying on architectural evidence as well as topographical literature and historical sources, this thesis offers a chronological narrative of women's architecture, …

Statecraft: Vandalism And Iconoclasm In The Digital Age, Connell Vaughan Jan 2015

Statecraft: Vandalism And Iconoclasm In The Digital Age, Connell Vaughan

Conference papers

Not only is vandalism increasingly subject to digital documentation, but the aesthetic nature of vandalism itself is different as a result of the digital. No longer is vandalism a local destructive act, it has become an act performed primarily for broadcast to global markets. This paper uses the example of Islamic State (IS) iconoclasm to explore the way in which digital media is strategically used by vandals and considers the responses of the heritage industry to respond to such destruction. It illustrates how the deliberate digital documentation and subsequent global broadcasting of the destruction of cultural heritage by Islamic State …
