The honeybee, Apis mellifera, is one of the most beneficial insects worldwide. Several factors stress this pollinating insect, with Varroa destructor infestation being one of the most devastating reasons. Conventional acaricides necessitate an alternative control due to the development of resistance and the accumulation of residues. It also describes respondents’ organic production experiences, including years certified, certified acreage, and the primary motivations behind adopting organic production methods. The findings presented provide valuable insights into the characteristics, experiences, and needs of Utah producers related to organic agriculture. Lantana camara is a major invasive plant species in Zimbabwe. Its toxic effects pose a threat to livestock production, biodiversity, and development. A survey was carried out throughout the country to investigate the distribution of L. camara in Zimbabwe and assess the extent of its spread. Identification was done by toxicologists with the support of an experienced botanist from the National Herbarium of Zimbabwe. The location of the plants was identified using a portable Garmin eTrex® 10 Handheld GPS navigation device., and the coordinates were recorded. Temporary identification is an important management tool for beef producers. Animals are routinely marked following breeding, pregnancy diagnosis, vaccination, treatment, sorting, shipping, and marketing so they can be quickly identified without repeated handling. Effective temporary identification improves labor efficiency, reduces animal stress, and helps ensure management decisions are applied to the correct animals. This fact sheet provides information on temporary cattle marking using hair bleach.

[Objective] To establish a rapid detection method for 81 illegal weight loss additives in tablet candy using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). [Methods] Samples were ultrasonically extracted with 80% methanol-water (containing 0.1% formic acid), separated on a Waters ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 column, and eluted with a gradient of methanol and 0.1% formic acid water solution. Detection was performed using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) with simultaneous scanning in positive and negative electrospray ionization modes, and quantification was carried out using the external standard method. [Results] The 81 target analytes showed good linear relationships within their respective mass concentration ranges, …

[Objective] To compare the effects of four pretreatment methods—hot pressing (HP), steam explosion (SE), ultrasound (US), and solid-state fermentation (SF)—on the structural characteristics and antioxidant activities of Polygonatum sibiricum polysaccharides (PSP), and to explore the potential application of PSP in fruit preservation. [Methods] Ten PSP samples are prepared. The yield, relative molecular mass, functional groups, thermal stability, surface morphology, and DPPH·, ABTS·, and OH· free radical scavenging abilities of the samples are determined. [Objective] To expand the application fields of distillers dried grains with solubles and improve its market value. [Methods] Arabinoxylan (AX) was extracted from distillers dried grains with solubles and modified to prepare AX with different molecular structures. AX was then reacted with soy protein isolate (SPI) via the Maillard reaction to prepare the AX-SPI covalent complex. [Objective] To investigate the regulatory effects of sodium butyrate on biofilm formation by Salmonella typhimurium and clarify its effects on the expression of virulence-related genes and pathogenicity under in vivo conditions. [Methods] S. typhimurium was treated with 4 mg/mL and 8 mg/mL sodium butyrate, and the effects of sodium butyrate on biofilm formation, motility, metabolic activity, and quorum sensing of the strain were detected. [Objective] To establish a detection method for egg components in food using microfluidic digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. [Methods] Specific primers and fluorescent probes are designed based on the mitochondrial gene nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1). Then, the reaction system and amplification conditions are optimized, and specificity and sensitivity are evaluated before being applied to actual food detection. [Results] The established method can specifically detect egg components, while no cross-reactivity is observed with other common poultry egg components, such as duck and goose eggs. [Objective] To comparatively evaluate the effects of three extraction methods, i.e., steam distillation (SD), enzyme-assisted steam distillation (EHSD), and ultrasound-assisted steam distillation (UASD), on the extraction efficiency, chemical composition, and bioactivity of Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis (Guangfoshou) essential oil. Utah State University Extension partnered with local government and conservation districts to reduce agricultural losses while creating meaningful opportunities for youth. Over three years, 92 participants removed 3,941 rodents, earned $26,620, and gained practical skills through hands-on conservation work. The program shows how Extension-led partnerships can strengthen agricultural profitability, youth development, and community collaboration at the same time.

Utah dairy producers identified public perceptions as a top concern. Utah State University Extension partnered with Cache County organizations to offer dairy farm tours. Participants reported increased knowledge, more favorable perceptions, and stronger intentions to engage with agriculture, supporting experiential education as a means to strengthen understanding of dairy production.

Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is a highly perishable fruit that undergoes rapid quality deterioration during postharvest storage. This study evaluated the effects of postharvest applications of Methyl Jasmonate (MeJA, 1 mM) and Calcium Chloride (CaCl₂, 2%), applied individually and in combination, on maintaining the quality and biochemical properties of cherries during 21 days of cold storage at 0 ± 1 °C. Sewage sludge management represents a major challenge in Europe, carrying significant environmental and legal implications that require strong regulatory enforcement. Here, we explore the legislative measures, technological developments, and environmental impacts of sewage sludge management in Central Europe (Czechia, Slovakia, Germany, Austria, and Poland). Sludge management is regulated at the EU level through a series of directives (e.g., Council Directive 86/278/EEC, which forms the basis of national regulatory frameworks). Salinity stress impairs plant growth, nutrient homeostasis, and metabolism, particularly in arid ecosystems. Phyla nodiflora, a ground cover used for erosion control, shows preliminary salinity tolerance, but the mechanistic basis of its long-term adaptation and the potential for enhancement via potassium humate (KH) were unknown. Plant growth, key biochemical attributes, and nutrient uptake were assessed to elucidate how KH modulates physiological performance under increasing salinity. The carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua L.) is a drought-tolerant species native to the Mediterranean Basin. It has been cultivated for centuries for its highly nutritious, edible pods. Genetic diversity is one of the key requirements for the effective management and utilization of plant genetic resources. In this study, we evaluated the genetic diversity and population structure of 169 seminatural carob individuals from Lebanon, Spain, and Morocco using nine expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers. This study examines whether cover crops can be used in Utah and the Intermountain West to improve water quality and reduce contamination due to nutrient leaching from agricultural soils into the groundwater. Cover crops such as grasses, clover, and other seed mixtures can be planted to improve soil health, increasing the soil’s ability to retain water and nutrients, which reduces the amount of nitrate and phosphate fertilizers lost through leaching and contamination. Drought is a persistent concern in the western United States, often leading to reduced forage production, overgrazing, and economic challenges for livestock producers. This study evaluates the economic feasibility of incorporating stocker cattle as a flexible drought management strategy under varying forage conditions across four Utah grazing locations: Park Valley, Nephi, Vernal, and Beaver. The Rangeland Analysis Platform (RAP) was used to estimate annual forage production and stocking rates from 2001 through 2025. Four stocking-rate scenarios (100%, 75%, 60%, and 50% cow–calf stocking rates) were evaluated using a Net Present Value (NPV) framework to compare the economic performance of traditional …
