Journal for the boat Eastern Star, a fishing vessel, presumably cod Fishing, whose Skipper was Andrew H. Burnham. The log records wind speed and direction as well as number of fish taken by each crew member, but no details on locations of Fishing grounds. The vessel sailed out of Cape Porpoise (Me.), and the log includes a handwritten Oath of Master at the end of the Journal taken at the U.S. Custom House, Kennebunk.

Also includes quantities of fish made and packed on board.

Includes accounts of making fish with large quantities of salt. The ship was likely one of the vessels managed by Witherle and Company [formerly Hook and Witherle, 1806-1808; Witherle and Jarvis, 1810-1844; and William Witherle and Company, 1844-1855], a general store in Castine, Me. that …

Includes much reference to weather conditions and regular accounts of catch for individual crew members, including total number of daily catch for April 1853 in front of Journal. Back of Journal contains handwritten instructions for finding the time and longitude by chronometer.
