Impact Of Demand Correlation And Information Sharing In A Capacitated Supply Chain With Multiple Retailers, Chanel Helper, Lauren Davis, Wenbin Wei
Dr. Lauren B Davis
This paper considers a single product, two-echelon capacity constrainedsupplychain consisting of a supplier and two retailers facing correlated end-item demand. We use a decentralized Markov decision process with restricted observations to represent this system and conduct a numerical study to quantify the benefits of information sharing to the retailers under varying levels of supplier capacity and supply allocation mechanisms. Our results show an inverse relationship between capacity and information and indicate the retailers can achieve significant benefits as a result of the information sharing partnership.

Engineering Students' Definitions Of And Responses To Self-Directed Learning, Jonathan Stolk, Rob Martello, Mark Somerville, John Geddes
Mark Somerville
COLLEGE INSTRUCTORS have struggled with a lack of self-directed learning (SDL) development in their students for many decades. Self-direction is by no means a new topic in teaching and learning, but it is one of growing significance in engineering educational discourse. In 1969, Carl Rogers articulated the need for flexible, independent learners: Teaching and the imparting of knowledge make sense in an unchanging environment. This is why it has been an unquestioned function for centuries. But if there is one truth about modern man, it is that he lives in an environment which is continually changing . . .We are, …

The Effect Of Curvature Rate On The Received Power In Parabolic Reflector, 2009 Western Michigan University
The Effect Of Curvature Rate On The Received Power In Parabolic Reflector, Amean Al_Safi

In this paper we study the effect of curvature rate on the generated electric field at the focus point if the frequency and diameter are constants .We assume that the incident electromagnetic waves distributed uniformly on each point of the reflector surface ;hence we can imagine that this reflector has uniform surface charge ,and this body will generate an electric field on all points in front of it (including the focus point) . This field can be obtained by using coulomb’s law .The derived expression for electric field show that X and Y components will vanish and the electric field …

Thermochemical gasification is one of the most promising technologies for converting biomass into power, fuels and chemicals. The objectives of this study were to maximize the net energy efficiency for biomass gasification, and to estimate the cost of producing industrial gas and combined heat and power (CHP) at a feedrate of 2000 kg/h. Aspen Plus-based model for gasification was combined with a CHP generation model, and optimized using corn stover and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) as the biomass feedstocks. The cold gas efficiencies for gas production were 57% and 52%, respectively, for corn stover and DDGS. The selling …
Ontology-Based Information Extraction For Analyzing It Services, 2009 Dakota State University
Ontology-Based Information Extraction For Analyzing It Services, Amit Deokar, Sagnika Sen

Service Level Agreements (SLA) for multi-service Information Technology (IT) outsourcing contracts contain vast amounts of textual information. The SLAs provide details about a specific service, Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to measure its performance; as well as process elements, such as activities, events, and resources that are integral in achieving performance goals. However, KPIs and the process elements may be interrelated. The knowledge of such interrelationships is often tacitly present in the SLAs. The aim of our research is to extract this hidden information from IT service contracts and analyze them to empower customers of IT services to make better performance …
The Context Matters: Maritime Safety In The Vessel Traffic Service (Vts) Domain, 2009 Selected Works
The Context Matters: Maritime Safety In The Vessel Traffic Service (Vts) Domain, Gesa Praetorius, Margareta Lützhöft, Karl Bruno
Gesa Praetorius
Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is a service to the maritime community implemented to promote and improve maritime safety. In recent years VTS has become a topic of increased interest for maritime stakeholders and the general public. To derive insights on how maritime safety is constructed in the VTS domain this exploratory study was conducted. Four VTS centres were visited and 15 VTS operators were interviewed and observed at work. Further a focus group interview with 8 VTS operators with focus on decision support tools in the VTS domain was conducted. The results of the study indicate that VTS operators define …

100nm Thick Aluminum Nitride Based Piezoelectric Nano Switches Exhibiting 1mv Threshold Voltage Via Body-Biasing, Nipun Sinha, Zhijun Guo, Valeriy Felmetsger, Gianluca Piazza
Nipun Sinha
This paper reports on the first demonstration of aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric logic switches that were fabricated with ultra-thin (100nm) AlN films and exhibit a 1 mV threshold voltage via the body-biasing scheme. The application of a relatively low (< 6 V) fixed potential to the body terminal of a 4-terminal switch has resulted in a repeatable threshold voltage of 1 mV. The nano-switch has been cycled to > 109 cycles and, although the contact resistance was found to be high (~ 1 MΩ), the nano-films have functioned throughout to show high piezoelectric nano-film reliability.

New Twelve Node Serendipity Quadrilateral Plate Bending Element Based On Mindlin-Reissner Theory Using Integrated Force Method, Zamin Jumaat
Zamin Jumaat
The Integrated Force Method (IFM) is a novel matrix formulation developed for analyzing the civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering structures. In this method all independent/internal forces are treated as unknown variables which are calculated by simultaneously imposing equations of equilibrium and compatibility conditions. This paper presents a new 12-node serendipity quadrilateral plate bending element MQP12 for the analysis of thin and thick plate problems using IFM. The MindlinReissner plate theory has been employed in the formulation which accounts the effect of shear deformation. The performance of this new element with respect to accuracy and convergence is studied by analyzing many …

The focus of this review is on the relationships between autoimmune diseases and cancer from two closely related perspectives: 1.Those autoimmune diseases which are often associated with malignancies. 2.Those prevalent cancers which may increase the risks of developing autoimmune disorders. The review concludes with a brief discussion of some selected innovative approaches to cancer immunotherapy.
Better To Be Frustrated Than Bored: The Incidence, Persistence, And Impact Of Learners' Cognitive-Affective States During Interactions With Three Different Computer-Based Learning Environments, 2009 Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Better To Be Frustrated Than Bored: The Incidence, Persistence, And Impact Of Learners' Cognitive-Affective States During Interactions With Three Different Computer-Based Learning Environments, Ryan Baker, Ma.Mercedes Rodrigo, Sidney D'Mello, Arthur Graesser
Ryan S.J.d. Baker
We study the incidence (rate of occurrence), persistence (rate of reoccurrence immediately after occurrence), and impact (effect on behavior) of students’ cognitive-affective states during their use of three different computer-based learning environments. Students’ cognitive-affective states are studied using different populations (Philippines, USA), different methods (quantitative field observation, self-report), and different types of learning environments (dialogue tutor, problemsolving game, and problem-solving based Intelligent Tutoring System). By varying the studies along these multiple factors, we can have greater confidence that findings which generalize across studies are robust. The incidence, persistence, and impact of boredom, frustration, confusion, engaged concentration, delight, and surprise were …
