Qualitative Analysis Of The Impact Of A Cultural Partnership On The Cultural Orientation Of Undergraduates, Sadie Liedall, Sarah Lieske
Undergraduate Research Symposium
This study compared changes in the Cultural Orientation of four groups of undergraduate students in a course, Human Relations in a Multicultural Society. The hypothesis for this study was that the intentional, cross-cultural experiences the students experienced in the course did have an impact on the Cultural Orientation of each student. A convenience sample of 85 students registered for 4 sections during fall 2011. The course design provided for intercultural partnerships with individuals from diverse populations outside the classroom and for reflection on such interactions. Each student completed (1) minimum of 18 hours service learning at an agency with persons …

Objective:The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a brief intervention for mandated students in the context of the University Assistance Program, a Student Assistance Program developed and modeled after workplace Employee Assistance Programs. Method:Participants were 265 (196 males and 69 females) judicially mandated college students enrolled in a large, urban university in the northeast United States. All participants were sanctioned by the university's judicial office for an alcohol- or drug-related violation. Participants were randomized to one of two intervention conditions (the University Assistance Program or services as usual) and were assessed at baseline and 3 and …
Academic Achievement Of Children In Single Parent Homes: A Critical Review, 2012 Western Michigan University
Academic Achievement Of Children In Single Parent Homes: A Critical Review, Mark S. Barajas
Mark S. Barajas, PhD
In the United States, almost half of all children by age 15 will have lived in a single-parent family. Many authors have documented differences between children raised in father-absent and father-present homes. A few researchers have focused on resiliency and the strengths of single parent homes. Despite calls for a greater emphasis on discovering strengths, the majority of research concerning single parenthood has focused on the disadvantages faced by children raised in the absence of their father. This paper summarizes current research, discuss problems with that body of work, and suggests areas for further study.

The passive teaching approach had been the only way in mathematics teaching because it is really difficult for students to understand by self-studying in a short time. Unlike other sciences, mathematics are not driven by hypotheses and experiments. We should always learn the correct definition, statements, and justifications. The teachers can make the learning process easier and faster for students. However, active learning strategies can be applied to mathematics teaching, particularly in advanced mathematics courses. For example, I am teaching Math 674, Computations in Linear Algebra. There are eight graduate students enrolled for this course, seven from Math Department and …

The Impact Of Analyzing Correct Versus Incorrect Student Work Samples On Students’ Mathematical Proficiency, 2012 University of Tennessee - Knoxville
The Impact Of Analyzing Correct Versus Incorrect Student Work Samples On Students’ Mathematical Proficiency, Lauren Jeneva Moseley
Lauren Jeneva Moseley
The purpose of this study is to determine if any gains in mathematical understanding differ if calculus learners analyze correct or incorrect student work samples and to investigate students’ perceptions of the effect of analyzing student work samples on their understanding of mathematical concepts. Calculus students will be assigned to two groups: one group analyzing correct student work samples and one group analyzing incorrect student work samples. What difference, if any, exists between groups in determining correct solutions to problems similar to the work samples analyzed? What difference, if any, exists between groups in whether they replicate errors similar to …
