Teaching For Social Justice With Standards-Based Secondary English Language Arts Curriculum, Alison George Dover

Teaching for social justice is the attempt by classroom teachers to use their position in the classroom to promote social and educational reform within and despite current educational conditions and mandates. However, while a growing number of K-12 teachers have published anecdotal reports of their attempts to teach for social justice in secondary classrooms (e.g., Bender-Slack, 2007; Christensen, 2000; Singer, 2005), there is great variability among these accounts, and scant evaluation of their impact on specific academic, behavioral/motivational, and attitudinal outcomes (see Grant & Agosto, 2008; Kelly & Brandes, 2008; Poplin & Rivera, 2005).

D.I.S.C.O.V.E.R. the Future with Robotics, a state-funded grant that aims to foster collaboration between students from urban and suburban schools, is being conducted by Sacred Heart University’s Isabelle Farrington School of Education professors Maria Lizano-DiMare, Ed.D., and Antoinette Bruciati, Ph.D., in conjunction with educators from the Hall School and Region 16’s Laurel Ledge and Community schools. In creative partnerships, students designed, built and programmed their own working robots. The activities and assessments are based on the Robots Teach Math Curriculum® developed by Dr. Bruciati, who is a recognized expert in the field of educational robotics and has been a recipient …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Bandura’s (1986) theory of self-efficacy suggests that efficacy may be most malleable early in learning; therefore, some of the most powerful influences on the development of teachers’ sense of efficacy may be the experience of teaching during field placements and student teaching. Unfortunately, pre-service teachers may not be exposed to good role models for teaching during field placements. This article describes a qualitative study of the influence of vicarious experiences modeled by a teacher educator and master teachers on the development of pre-service teachers’ sense of efficacy for literacy instruction. Students Learn To Read Like Writers: A Framework For Teachers Of Writing, Robin R. Griffith

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study provides insight into the role of the elementary school writing teacher in helping students learn to “read like writers” (Smith, 1983). This case study documents how one fourth-grade teacher employed a gradual release of responsibility model as she deliberately planned activities that drew students’ attention to well-crafted writing. Findings indicate that this teacher played an important role in helping her students learn to read like writers and that through carefully crafted lessons she significantly influenced students’ knowledge of and implementation of crafting techniques.
