Influences On Active Family Leisure And Its Relationship To Obesity, Shallie Marlene Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine how attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control influence adolescents' intent to participate in active family leisure and furthermore to explore the nature of the relationship between active family leisure and body mass index (BMI) among adolescents. Adolescents (N = 472) completed an online questionnaire assessing the theory of planned behavior (TPB) variables, active family leisure, individual active leisure, and BMI. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. Tests of direct paths of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control to intent indicated these variables were significant predictors of intent …

The report was produced during most of 2009, and gives a state of art overview of current knowledge on the effects of catch and release practices on these fish species’ welfare, using accessible and peer reviewed published literature as basis for the assessment. Anecdotic and non-published reports have been used to a limited extent as they are regarded as untested or containing unverified statements. The Panel on Animal Health and Welfare discussed the full report in a meeting on the 9th of December, and gave its support to the conclusions drawn by the ad hoc-group.
The report has concentrated on …

A Consumer-Based Evaluation Of A Family Camp, Christine Davis Covey
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to evaluate a family camp's performance from a consumer (parent) perspective. An Importance-Performance Analysis was used. Responses averages were plotted on a grid of importance versus performance with the overall means used as cross-hairs to create an action grid of four quadrants: keep-up-the-good-work (high importance/high performance), concentrate-here (high importance/low performance), possible-overkill (low importance/high performance), and low-priority (low importance/low performance). Findings indicated that parents are in large part receiving good performance on the factors that are important to them. Findings identified factors that were important to parents including some factors that camp directors were not …

Does Trade Weaken Product Quality Standards, Katia Berti, Rodney E. Falvey
Rodney Falvey
In this paper we investigate the effects of trade on the national minimum quality standards applied by two trading partners. We employ a simple partial equilibrium model in which national regulators set a minimum quality standard for a product whose quality is unobservable to consumers prior to purchase. Both producers and consumers can benefit from a minimum standard, but the former prefer a lower standard to the latter. Because producers are organised and consumers are not, the standards set by national regulators will tend to unduly favour producer interests. As always, trade changes the balance of consumer and producer interests …

Trade Liberalisation And Human Capital Adjustment, Rodney E. Falvey, David Greenaway, Joana Silva
Rodney Falvey
This paper highlights the way in which workers of different age and ability are affected by anticipated and unanticipated trade liberalisations. A two-factor (skilled and unskilled labour), two-sector Heckscher-Ohlin trade model is supplemented with a education sector which uses skilled labour and time to convert unskilled workers into skilled workers. A skilled worker's income depends on her ability, but all unskilled workers have the same income. Trade liberalisation in a relatively skilled labour abundant country increases the relative skilled wage and induces skill upgrading by the existing workforce. The younger and more able unskilled workers are most likely to upgrade. …

Optimizing An F-16 Squadron Weekly Pilot Schedule For The Turkish Air Force, Murat Yavuz
Theses and Dissertations
Fighter squadrons in the Turkish Air Force build flight schedules for weekly periods. This process requires a great deal of time and does not seek optimality. Schedules are built with feasibility concerns. The Turkish Air Force doesn’t have an automated tool for flight scheduling. Many constraints including crew rest, number of sorties flown in a month, and duty currencies affect the schedule. Providing an automated scheduling tool may help schedulers save time for other squadron tasks including mission preparation, briefing, and debriefing. In this research, a heuristic approach to the problem is developed. Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedures (GRASP) is …

Defining The Technology Transition Manager Within The Acquisition Framework Of The Department Of Defense, Ernest Csoma
Theses and Dissertations
One of the main challenges in new product development is maintaining communication and coordination among the various development and product teams supporting the project. This research proposes the establishment of a technology transition manager who acts on the behalf of the program manager as a “deal broker” to facilitate the transition of technology from one organization to another for further development and integration. Specifically, the researcher sought to answer five research questions addressing the required experience, expertise, organizational alignment, job skills, individual characteristics, roles, and responsibilities of technology transition managers. The researcher also examined differing expectations of transition managers among …

A Linear Programming Approach For Determining Travel Cost Minimizing Ecss Training Locations, Jason S. Boerboom
Theses and Dissertations
The Department of Defense is currently operating in a fiscally constrained environment, and Air Force leaders are pressured to minimize spending while pursuing mission critical objectives. Personnel travel usurps a significant portion of the Air Force’s annual operations and maintenance (O&M) budget each year, but receives little attention with respect to cost saving strategies. During the Air Force’s implementation of the Expeditionary Combat Support System (ECSS), in which over 250,000 end-users will require training, it is vital that the Department determine the training locations that minimize costs incurred through personnel travel. This thesis seeks to determine which potential ECSS training …

Measuring The Effect Of Transportation Uncertainty In The Postponement Strategy, Chang-Sung Kim
Theses and Dissertations
A manufacturing company can postpone production and logistics processes in its supply chain system. The delaying of manufacturing and logistics can eliminate the burden of accurate forecasting of demand and thereby reduce inventory carrying cost. Identical postponement processes cannot be generally implemented because every product has its own characteristics in reference to demand and every company has its own individual production environment. A company needs to find its best postponement strategy to minimize its costs for any certain product. This study applies Pagh and Cooper (1998)’s typology of supply chain postponement/speculation strategies to find the best postponement strategy for a …

Korean Domestic Third Party Logistics Providers: Research For A Global Market, Daewon Kim
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis is to contribute to the globalization of Korean domestic third party logistics companies. This is accomplished through a benchmarking model for globalization based on a comparative analysis of domestic and global third party logistics provider (3PLs) companies. The research performed a SWOT analysis to identify the capabilities required by Korean domestic 3PLs to become global 3PLs. The research investigated the following areas: 1) global service, 2) infrastructure, 3) supply chain management (SCM) services, and 4) information technology (promptness, visibility). This was accomplished by an extensive literature review, case analysis of logistics companies, and telephone interviews …

Stealthy River Navigation In Jungle Combat Conditions, Fabio Ayres Cardoso
Theses and Dissertations
One of the biggest challenges for Brazilian military logisticians is to support effective jungle warfare for both real and training operations carried out by their combat forces in the Amazonian region. The jungle's heat, humidity, and dense vegetation put significant demands on the supply chain. Further, because of the difficulties of land or air transportation, water transport is the most reasonable transportation option to sustain these deployed forces. Planners must select from among the available watercourses those whose surroundings provide stealthy navigation to the combat force location where the requested supplies can be safely unloaded. We seek a method of …
