Juridische Kaders In De Sociale Economie: Een Rechtseconomische Doorlichting, Astrid Coates, Wim Van Opstal
Wim Van Opstal

Roads Or Radar: The Tradeoff Between Investments In Infrastructure And Forecasting When Facing Hurricane Risk, Eric Bickel, Seong Dae Kim
Eric Bickel
When faced with a significant risk, society must decide howmuch to invest in prediction and response. For example, in the face of hurricane risk how much should we invest in better forecasting versus increased evacuation speed? To address this need, we develop a Markov decision processes model to analyze the interaction between the emergency response system and the emergency forecasting system. The model shows the tradeoff between the two investments given a budget limit. In addition, the research indicates that the superiority of the investment changes sharply by the lead time.

Before Microfinance: The Social Value Of Microsavings In Vincentian Poverty Reduction, Marco Tavanti
Marco Tavanti
The purpose of this article is to present and discuss the values and limits of microfinance within the context of poverty reduction, international development and community empowerment. The main thesis is that microfinance requires a more complex strategy than simply the provision of credits. The development of financial capital depends on the increase in human capacity and social capital. Microfinance is revisited under the ethical lenses of global responsibility for alleviating poverty and developing community sustainability. Through a critical review of the literature and case studies from the Philippines, the author suggests a value-based Vincentian approach to integrate microfinance into ...

Activist Boards - Not Activist Shareholders, Graeme Cocks, Jens Mueller, Coral Ingley, Morina Rennie

Manuscript type: Conceptual
Research Question/Issue: This study considers the legitimacy of shareholder activism as a means of exercising influence in the corporate decision making process.
Research Findings/Insights: When shareholder activism takes the form of direct negotiation with management, important aspects of the principal-agent relationship are undermined—namely (1) ownership delegation of operational authority to management and (2) the reliance on control/monitoring mechanisms to ensure that management works for the benefit of owners. We propose that the long term solution is not activist shareholders, but activist boards. We envision a future where boards act as passionate, committed leaders ...

Acteal: An Open Wound On Indigenous Human Rights, Marco Tavanti
Marco Tavanti
The December 22, 1997 massacre of indigenous Maya people in town of Acteal in the Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico is an unsolved justice and indigenous rights case. Although some paramilitary associated people were imprisoned and liberated by a decision of the Mexican Supreme Court, the sense of justice and proper reparation is nothing but a frustrated reality for various indigenous groups, especially for the family members of the victims, members of Las Abejas (The Bees) civil society organization.

Regulation By Markets And Higher Education, Benedict Sheehy

Markets have a number of uses. One increasingly important use by politicians is as a means of regulating the supply and distribution of goods and services formerly supplied and distributed by governments on non-market bases. The use of markets as a regulator of higher education is not novel. However, the increased reliance on markets as a regulator of higher education is an on-going experiment with certain predictable failures. This article explores the uses of the market in the supply and distribution of higher education and weighs it against the stated policy objectives, with particular attention to the application proposed in ...

Bayesian Inference For A Periodic Stochastic Volatility Model Of Intraday Electricity Prices, Michael S. Smith
Michael Stanley Smith
The Gaussian stochastic volatility model is extended to allow for periodic autoregressions (PAR) in both the level and log-volatility process. Each PAR is represented as a first order vector autoregression for a longitudinal vector of length equal to the period. The periodic stochastic volatility model is therefore expressed as a multivariate stochastic volatility model. Bayesian posterior inference is computed using a Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme for the multivariate representation. A circular prior that exploits the periodicity is suggested for the log-variance of the log-volatilities. The approach is applied to estimate a periodic stochastic volatility model for half-hourly electricity prices ...

Regional Development And Interregional Collaboration In The Growth Of Nanotechnology Research In China, Li Tang, Philip Shapira

China is becoming a leading nation in terms of its share of the world’s publications in the emerging nanotechnology domain. This paper demonstrates that the international rise of China’s position in nanotechnology has been underwritten by the emergence of a series of regional hubs of nanotechnology R&D activity within the country. We develop a unique database of Chinese nanotechnology articles covering the period 1990 to mid-2006 to identify the regional distribution of nanotechnology research in China. To build this database, a new approach was developed to clean and standardize the geographical allocation of Chinese publication records. We ...
