BA (Hons) in Contemporary English Studies : Creative Writing Journal

Editor's Note

When I was at school, no career officer ever asked: Who wants to be a writer? There were no leaflets. No guidelines. I never even met another author who might point me in the rough direction, or even - standing far ahead of me on the bleak and windswept heath - give me footsteps within which to set my own.

And really, there is no blueprint. No secret path, or hidden door, no singular road less travelled. But there are many steps; and many of the first are faltering or hesitant and often embarrassing! But all steps, however …

A Comparison Between The Verbal Interruptions By Speakers Of English As A Lingua Franca (Elf) And Speakers Of English As A Native Language (Enl), Yue Yuan LI 2010 Lingnan University

A Comparison Between The Verbal Interruptions By Speakers Of English As A Lingua Franca (Elf) And Speakers Of English As A Native Language (Enl), Yue Yuan Li

Theses & Dissertations

Previous research focused primarily on how interruptions vary according to social factors in situations where English is the native language for all speakers (see Menz and Al-Roubaie, 2008; O‟Reilly, 2008; West and Zimmerman, 1983; Zimmerman and West, 1975). Little has been done on interruptions in situations where English is used as a lingua franca. The purpose of this research is to 1) provide conversational evidence on how experienced ELF speakers make interruptions, 2) explore functions of interruptions in ELF communication; 3) compare the types and functions of interruptions in ELF communication with those in ENL communication; 4) compare the types …

The Visions Of Lena Younger Created By Lorraine Hansberry In A Raisin In The Sun, Lizandra Gomes 2010 Bridgewater State University

The Visions Of Lena Younger Created By Lorraine Hansberry In A Raisin In The Sun, Lizandra Gomes

Undergraduate Review

This is one chapter of a full Honors’ Thesis entitled “The Visions of Women Created by Three Major Female African American Playwrights of the Twentieth Century: Georgia Douglas Johnson, Lorraine Hansberry, and Suzan-Lori Parks”. This chapter addresses the vision of Lena Younger created by Lorraine Hansberry in A Raisin in the Sun. It analyses the vision of African American women emerging through the character of Lena Younger, during the Civil Rights Movement by employing traditional dramaturgical methodology, including facets of Literary Structural Analysis, and Stanislavskian Analysis. This study in its whole will, thus, demonstrate how the self-perceived image of African …

Silent Devotion, Thu Huynh 2010 Bridgewater State University

Silent Devotion, Thu Huynh

Undergraduate Review

On my first day I stepped into class, I attempted to avoid nervousness and unfamiliarity which usually happens to all freshmen. My first class started at 9:05; I saw a lot of people sitting in class, and I thought that I was already late. I opened the door and everyone looked at me like a stranger. The one who looked at me with a tender smile was Professor Jennifer K*, my math teacher. She asked me whether or not I should be in her class at this time; politely, I answered her that my class started at 9:05. Then she …

Review Of Willmott, H.P., The Great Crusade: A New Complete History Of The Second World War, James V. Koch 2010 Old Dominion University

Review Of Willmott, H.P., The Great Crusade: A New Complete History Of The Second World War, James V. Koch

Economics Faculty Publications

(First Paragraph) The first edition of The Great Crusade (1989) was a fine, comprehensive, single-volume history of World War II. The revised edition is even better, though readers should be aware that this is a military history of the war that usually focuses on decision-making and activities at the operational level and above. The author sometimes speaks of individual fighting divisions, but almost never about individual soldiers. This work is thus not the place for the reader to discover the tales and yarns of individual soldiers. Those who hope to grasp what it was like to be a Marine storming …

Un Film Sentimental Para Tus Ojos: El Cinematógrafo En La Poesía Ultraísta De Lucía Sánchez Saornil, Vera Ruth Jones 2010 University of Montana

Un Film Sentimental Para Tus Ojos: El Cinematógrafo En La Poesía Ultraísta De Lucía Sánchez Saornil, Vera Ruth Jones

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Lucía Sánchez Saornil was the only woman poet who participated in Ultraism, a Spanish Avant-Garde movement of the 1920s that implemented constant thematic and formal experimentation in search of a new language capable of representing modernity and technology. This Spanish-language paper focuses on the impact of cinematography on the Ultraist poetry of Sánchez Saornil. By analyzing two of her poems, "Cines" (1921) and "Domingo" (date unknown), I explain how she utilizes cinematography to 1) to express her experience of modernity and 2) to articulate her relationship with her poetry and the reader. The analysis of these texts and the role …

Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm 2010 Washington University in St. Louis

Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation traces the history of the Jewish community in Königsberg, East Prussia, from its founding in 1700 to the aftermath of the Prussian Emancipation Edict of 1812, as well as the early stages of Jewish embourgeoisement and political integration. My project combines aspects of a traditional communal history with newer trends in Jewish history, including an integrated discussion of economic and cultural life. I argue that the commercial successes of the Jewish mercantile elite in Königsberg, in particular of the Friedländer family, set the stage for the publication of ha-Measef and the local flowering of the haskalah. Moreover, I …
