Hearing Voices: Female Transmission Of Memories In Okinawan Literature In The 1970s And 1980s, Erumi Honda 2010 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Hearing Voices: Female Transmission Of Memories In Okinawan Literature In The 1970s And 1980s, Erumi Honda

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

In this thesis, using Ōshiro Tatsuhiro’s “Meiro” (Maze, 1991) and Nakandakari Hatsu’s “Hahatachi onnatachi” (Mothers/Women, 1984) as primary sources, I have pursued two main questions about postwar Okinawan literature: the question of how memory is transmitted, along gender lines, about a traumatic past through the generations and the question of yuta operating as transmitters, mediators, and anchors of cultural identity under the threat of foreign influence.

Both “Maze” and “Mothers/Women” address the issue of postwar Okinawan identity in the face of an influx of new ideas and practices by portraying Okinawan women’s struggle to find their identity. These two stories …

The Go-Tsuchimikado Shinkan-Bon ~ Izumi Shikibu Shū: A Translation Of The Poems And An Analysis Of Their Sequence, Lisa Nelson 2010 University of Massachusetts Amherst

The Go-Tsuchimikado Shinkan-Bon ~ Izumi Shikibu Shū: A Translation Of The Poems And An Analysis Of Their Sequence, Lisa Nelson

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

The Go-Tsuchimikado Shinkan-bon ~ Izumi Shikibu Shū is a 15th century manuscript of 150 poems by the 10th/11th century poet, Izumi Shikibu. This thesis includes translations for all 150 poems with detailed translation notes and an examination of the arrangement of the poems. It seems likely that the Shinkan-bon would have been organized in a sequence that links poems together in such a way as to create a larger poetical work for the collection as a whole. Sequences are developed through a natural progression of temporal and spatial elements in the poems, as well as connections through mood, theme, imagery, …

Garbage And Marble, Emily Rae 2010 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Garbage And Marble, Emily Rae

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

I’m interested in writing stories that make me as author disappear. A little. I’d like for my stories to unravel themselves while I sit just barely visible, maybe on a porch across the street. I’m also interested in playing with unusual phrases and syntax to achieve authentic voice in my stories. This sets up a conflict because while I want to develop small, fairly simple stories, I also value some language trickery, which might come off as authorial. I want nuanced voices that don’t feel editorialized. I want the stories to be authentic in an off-putting way. My biggest challenge …

Red Soil And The Silver Screen: The Evolution Of Realism In American World War Two Films, Paul W. Ossou 2010 Seton Hall University

Red Soil And The Silver Screen: The Evolution Of Realism In American World War Two Films, Paul W. Ossou

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The purpose of this thesis is to determine if there has been any change in the incorporation of realism in World War II films since the end of the war. A content analysis was preformed on eight films that cover a range of years, to monitor the change in certain key aspects of realism. The films spanned 1955 to 2007. The key factors revolved around the plot, characters and depiction of combat. This thesis then offers an analysis of the changes and what effect those changes have had on World War II combat films.

Indivisibility And Linkage Arguments: A Reply To Gilabert, James W. Nickel 2010 University of Miami School of Law

Indivisibility And Linkage Arguments: A Reply To Gilabert, James W. Nickel

Articles

This reply discusses Pablo Gilabert's response to my article, "Rethinking Indivisibility." It welcomes his distinction between conceptual, normative, epistemic, and causal forms of support from one right to another. It denies, however, that "Rethinking Indivisibility" downplayed linkage arguments for human rights (although it did call for careful evaluation of such arguments), and rejects Gilabert's suggestion that we understand the indivisibility of two rights as two rights being highly useful to each other (interdependence) rather than as mutual indispensability. In the final section, I offer two new worries about the system-wide indivisibility of human rights.
