Bim Applications In Conceptual Design Phase: Exploring The Abilities And Limitations Of Autodesk Revit Architecture Through The Generative Geometric Design Approach, Sara Ben Lashihar
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Autodesk Revit Architecture as one of BIM applications has shown recent improvements in creating complex forms in conceptual design phase. These improvements have been published lately in reports (Autodesk 2010; Autodesk 2009) and books (Krygiel et al. 2010). The presented abilities were introduced within a general scope, and they were not examined in detail with various generative design approaches. The generalization and the ambiguity of these publications lead designers to avoid using Revit in conceptual design phase, and use other 3D modeling softwares that are more compatible with their way of thinking.
This thesis examines the abilities and limitations of …
Defining Excellence In Healthcare Design: The Role Of Personal Qualities, 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Defining Excellence In Healthcare Design: The Role Of Personal Qualities, Roger J. Vitello
Interior Design Program: Theses
Healthcare design has been recognized as a legitimate area of specialization[1], a field. Expertise in the healthcare design and building process is needed. Where and how future healthcare design practitioners will be educated remains a challenge. While the evolution of research-based design for health facilities has grown since the 1980s little is known about how healthcare designers should be educated. [2] An understanding of personal qualities a graduating student is expected to possess is important to their education. [3] Knowledge about the qualities that determine excellence in healthcare design practice is sparse. By understanding which qualities have been …
Aging With Independence And Interaction: An Assisted Living Community, 2011 University of South Florida
Aging With Independence And Interaction: An Assisted Living Community, Steven J. Flositz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the U.S. population gets older, there is an increased need for senior housing. However, elderly housing is currently associated with dependence and isolation. There is a great disconnect from the retired community with its surrounding context. Senior housing and nursing homes are becoming more similar to miniature hospitals rather than a residential type. This negative view of nursing homes is becoming clear to the general population. In fact, most seniors fear the idea of living within an aging complex. Also, people generally avoid these places, even while visiting family. Florida is on the frontline for the effects of the …

Dr. Karolina M. Zielinska-Dabkowska MSc. Arch., Dipl. Ing. Arch.(FH), Ph.D. IALD, IES, MSLL, RIBA
This paper addresses issues of successful retail lighting schemes to make the reader familiar with the Do’s & Don’ts. It also looks into the details of designing lighting particularly for window displays, external shop signage and outdoor terraces of restaurants. A holistic approach for retail lighting is presented with case studies of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ lighting solutions, mostly from Europe, to underline the impacts of lighting on the retail business in the respective countries.
Integration Of Bicycling And Walking Facilities Into The Infrastructure Of Urban Communities [Draft], 2011 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo
Integration Of Bicycling And Walking Facilities Into The Infrastructure Of Urban Communities [Draft], Cornelius Nuworsoo, Erin Cooper, Eugene Jud, Katherine Cushing
City and Regional Planning
Several manuals, handbooks and web resources exist to provide varied guidance on planning for and designing bicycle and pedestrian facilities. Yet there are no specific indications about which of the varied treatments in these guides work well for users. This project highlights best practices and identifies program characteristics associated with high levels of non-motorized travel, with an emphasis on bicyclists and pedestrians, in the selected Californian urban case study communities of Davis, Palo Alto and San Luis Obispo. The case studies are used to illustrate how urban communities can better integrate non-motorized transportation modes into the physical infrastructure and the …

Using The Hyatt Regency Skywalk Collapse Case Study In Engineering Education., 2011 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo
Using The Hyatt Regency Skywalk Collapse Case Study In Engineering Education., John W. Lawson, Pamalee A. Brady
Architectural Engineering
To this day, the 1981 skywalk collapse in the Kansas City Hyatt Regency resulted in the worst loss of life from a structural engineering mistake in United States history. While many important engineering lessons can be drawn from this disaster, it is just as important to recognize the broader lessons learned in the design and construction process as a whole that can be successfully brought into the classroom. Numerous organizations have undertaken the task of envisioning how engineering education can meet the demands of the future. ABET’s baccalaureate degree accreditation criteria, ASCE’s Body of Knowledge and Body of Knowledge 2 …

Scholar Week, Gregg Chenoweth
Scholar Week Archives (2011-2015)
During Scholar Week we take inspiration from 18th century preacher-scholar |ohn Wesley. As “a denominational university in the Wesleyan tradition,” scholarship and piety are thoroughly compatible here. So, in Scholar Week we tune our ear to the gong and echo of Wesley. It is not just history, but his story, even to this day. In our own scholarship projects we join a great cloud of Christians not educated out of their faith, but fashioning an educated faith, where the love of the Lord by heart, soul, strength, and mind is our great and worthy cause.

From Fail-Safe To Safe-To-Fail: Sustainability And Resilience In The New Urban World, 2011 University of Massachusetts - Amherst
From Fail-Safe To Safe-To-Fail: Sustainability And Resilience In The New Urban World, Jack F. Ahern
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Studio and Student Research and Creative Activity
Abstract: The extent to which the 21st Century world will be "sustainable" depends in large part on the sustainability of cities. Early ideas on implementing sustainability focused on concepts of achieving stability, practicing effective management and the control of change and growth-- a "fail-safe" mentality. More recent thinking about change, disturbance, uncertainty, and adaptability is fundamental to the emerging science of resilience, the capacity of systems to reorganize and recover from change and disturbance without changing to other states-- in other words, systems that are "safe to fail." While the concept of resilience is intellectually intriguing, it remains largely unpracticed …

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Studio and Student Research and Creative Activity
This report documents the work of the Graduate Urban Design Studio in Springfield’s Old Hill and Six Corners neighborhoods with 12,000 inhabitants. Both neighborhoods are challenged by a very low average household income, housing foreclosures, lot vacancies, lack of substantial home ownership, high traffic volumes and poor quality of open space. The primary goal of the project was to develop a vision to renew Old Hill and Six Corners to improve livability for their residents and create new opportunities for housing, recreation, working and commercial activities. Crucial keys to attaining this goal will be creating a stronger sense of place …
