City Of Mcfarland Land Use Element Update, Jeffrey James Ballantine

Master's Theses

The City of McFarland, CA is in the process of updating its General Plan and identified updating the land use element as the first step in this process. This land use element consists of a land use diagram, land use standards, and goals, policies, and programs. These components of the document are based upon community feedback as well as upon analysis of case studies and state and regional guidelines. The final plan accommodates for increased residential densities, a mixture of adjacent land uses, a greenbelt, and large areas of land adjacent to Highway 99 for commercial and industrial use.

Mirages Solidified: Myth, Beautification, And Tourism In The Creation Of Santa Barbara’S El Pueblo Viejo Landmark District, Michael D. Orth

Master's Theses

A number of books and articles have been written on the social movement to reimagine Southern California’s past in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While many of the pageants, parades, and public displays that defined this regional movement now reside in the pages of history, some architectural examples from this period are still visible today. In many cities, these examples are scattered throughout the community; while in others like Santa Barbara, they represent the centerpiece of the city’s architectural distinctiveness.

Santa Barbara’s architecture challenges urban scholars to successfully garner an accurate sense of the past. More importantly, such historic …

Land Classification Surrounding Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Washington, Danielle Dahlquist 2011 University of Washington Tacoma

Land Classification Surrounding Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Washington, Danielle Dahlquist

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Following the eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18th 1980, the ecosystem of Spirit Lake was dramatically altered and, since then, there has been a significant increase in the amount of primary productivity in the south end of the lake. The focus of this research is to identify land cover types surrounding Spirit Lake which, in the future, could be used to identify possible nutrient point sources flowing into surface waters entering the lake. The watershed pouring into the lake is covered by nitrogen-fixing vegetation that could potentially be contributing to the increased productivity. The work completed for …

Introduction:

Beginning a new journey as an international student in a foreign country is no easy task, the same story applies to the international students in University of Washington, Tacoma. An Environmental Economic Analysis Of Green Building And The Leadership In Energy And Environmental Design Rating System, John A. Manna 2011 Union College - Schenectady, NY

An Environmental Economic Analysis Of Green Building And The Leadership In Energy And Environmental Design Rating System, John A. Manna

Honors Theses

Buildings account for over 70% of U.S. energy consumption and produce 30% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. With growing concerns over future energy prices, the green building industry and the LEED rating system have made it their goal to produce better performing, more efficient buildings. LEED projects have been implemented in all 50 states, with 46 implementing LEED into public policy. In this study we evaluate the environmental and economic benefits of the LEED certification process. A cost-benefit analysis provides a framework for assessing the life cycle of a LEED building, incorporating both energy and cost savings, as well …

The Darker Side Of Americas Wonderland A Study Of The First Four Decades Of Yellowstone National Park, Elizabeth M. Sargent 2011 Union College - Schenectady, NY

The Darker Side Of Americas Wonderland A Study Of The First Four Decades Of Yellowstone National Park, Elizabeth M. Sargent

Honors Theses

Those who first stumbled across the steaming, bubbling land of Northwestern Wyoming in 1860s and early 1870s described it as “Hell on Earth.” Over the course of a few decades, the land underwent a vast transformation, which replaced “Hell” with “Wonderland” in visitors’ minds. The year 1872 represents a turning point in environmental legislation and marks the conception of Yellowstone, America’s first national park. While creating a national park preserved, for the first time, the country’s natural wonders, the 1872 act included no direction for management, no allocation of funds for upkeep, and no system set in place to manage …
