Resurrecting Saint Louis No. 1 Cemetery: Integrating Archival And Field Research With Digital Tools To Spatially Analyze, Map, And Reinterpret Site Evolution And Morphology, Joseph C. Torres Ii
Theses (Historic Preservation)
This design thesis is a synthesis of two issues. Without the accuracy and assured quality if the first issue, the second one would have no value. The first issue is the culmination of rich historical material and analysis demonstrated at St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 in New Orleans (St. Louis 1). The second issue is the availability contemporary developments in how society collects, manages, and disseminates information, and how the internet has been a principal component in facilitating each element of managing information. This thesis utilizes St. Louis 1 as a platform to assess how managing and distributing information on …

Philadelphia's 13th Street Passages: A Model For Urban Main Street Development, Kevin Mcmahon
Theses (Historic Preservation)
To a large extent, this thesis will investigate how 13th Street was successfully revitalized using a strategy similar to that of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Program, a broadly applied framework for the revitalization of historic commercial centers in downtown communities nationwide. The success of the Main Street program, as outlined in its Four-Point Approach to revitalization, relies on early and strong community organization and small business partnerships. However, because there was such little concern among business owners on 13th Street, and because the City of Philadelphia was unable to take a leading role in redevelopment, a …

Toward A New Approach To Evaluating Significance In Recent-Past Preservation Planning With A Case Study Of 1960s Properties In Philadelphia County, Kristin M. Hagar
Theses (Historic Preservation)
In evaluating a stock of recent-past buildings, it is important to stay alert to the ways in which recent-past heritage is more difficult to assess, and what we might be prone to do to make it easier to assess. It is not enough to involve numerous people in the process and to articulate our method of analysis. We as preservation professionals must also consciously strive to avoid cognitive shortcuts. We must set evaluative standards and choose priorities, without simply dismissing a great portion of the built environment as “crap” or accepting self-evidence as a measure of significance. Complexity should not …

A Study Of Historic Towns After "Tourism Explosion": The Case Of Çeşme, Foça And Şirince In Western Turkey, Aysem Kilinc-Unlu
Theses (Historic Preservation)
In his book The Conservation of European Cities, Donald Appleyard stated that, "The old city exemplifies the human scale, individuality, care and craftsmanship, richness and diversity that are lacking in the modern plastic, machine-made city with its repetitive components and large scale projects." However, many historic cities are in danger of becoming plastic because of tourism development despite the distinctive qualities they once had. Recent layers are not valued, faux elements are used to keep historic identity of built fabric, or diversity gets lost by replicating a selected type of architectural form. This thesis looks both into intended and …

Documentation And Evaluation Of The Conditions Of The 9th Century B.C.E. Mosaic, From Gordion, Turkey And Recommendations For Its Conservation And Treatment, Elizabeth T. Thompson
Theses (Historic Preservation)
The purpose of this report was to begin to consider options for how to improve the state of preservation and conservation of the Megaron 2 Mosaic. Archival documentation was gathered and a preliminary conditions assessment was performed. Research was conducted to find comparable projects that could establish a framework to help create a conservation plan for the mosaic. Finally, a phased program was created to guide the planning process. This information has been compiled in this thesis in order to establish a solid base on which future work can be built.

New Investigations Into A Historic Treatment: The Efficacy Of Gelatin As An Adhesive For Earthen Finishes At Mesa Verde National Park, Emily M. Aloiz
Theses (Historic Preservation)
This thesis comes out of years of work beginning in 1994 undertaken by Frank Matero and the University of Pennsylvania to stabilize the earthen surface finishes of Mesa Verde National Park in Southwestern Colorado. The aim of this research is to better understand the performance and deterioration mechanisms for gelatin treatments used to reattach earthen plasters and washes. Threats to the treatment method include biodeterioration and failure due to wet-dry cycles and humidity fluctuations. The adhesive’s durability to these weathering phenomena was researched and evaluated through testing proxy samples in the Architectural Conservation Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania. Forms Of Attachment: Additions To Postwar Icons, Nathan F. R. Rogers
Theses (Historic Preservation)
In the ongoing project of adding to the recently built, or more specifically the problem of additions to postwar icons, the issues have proven more slippery. (In this context, I use “project” to mean a larger theoretical endeavor or task of investigation rather than an architectural proposal.) First, what, in this context, is postwar? To focus this thesis, I define it as the period in American architecture from the end of World War II to the dissolution of the modern movement into the splintered ‘isms’ of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s that were bubbling up in the decades before. …

Prints By Gabriel Huquier After Oppenord's Decorated Ripa, Jean-François Bédard
School of Architecture - All Scholarship
This article discusses the ways in which Gabriel Huquier altered the designs of other artists and printmakers to create new prints. In particular, Bédard examines Huquier's reproduction of a copy of Cesare Ripa's Iconologia. Huquier did not appropriate Oppenord's Ripa in its entirety or follow the original sequence of drawings. Instead he produced a series of prints that feature elements randomly chosen from it. Bédard argues that Oppenord and Huquier were both bricoleurs, but who had different objectives for their projects. While Oppenord attempted to interpret the text, Huquier was concerned with profit.

Assessing Planning Approaches By Watershed Streamflow Modeling:Case Study Of The Woodlands, Texas, Bo Yang, M H. Li
Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Faculty Publications
The Woodlands, Texas, is well known as a town created following Ian McHarg’s ecological planning approach that uses soil permeability to coordinate development densities and land use. Very few studies have quantitatively measured the effect of this planning approach on stormwater management. In this study, watershed stream flow modeling was conducted to assess five hypothetical land use scenarios. These scenarios were compared with The Woodlands’ 2005 condition using the Automated Geospatial Watershed Assessment (AGWA) tool that simulates watershed long-term stream flow and peak discharges during single storms. The objectives are to: (1) assess The Woodlands development conditions during 1974–2005 on …

Using Case Studies To Characterize The Broader Meaning Of Engineering Design For Today’S Student, Pamalee A. Brady, John W. Lawson
Architectural Engineering
Numerous organizations have undertaken the task of envisioning the education required to meet the engineering demands of the future. The ABET study EC2000, ASCE’s Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge and Body of Knowledge 2 and the National Academy of Engineering have documented the need to change engineering education from its historical focus on technical content knowledge to include greater emphasis on professional issues and to integrate engineering practice into education. To this end teaching methods such as project-based learning, and the use of case studies are being explored to address these broader learning outcomes. Case studies in particular facilitate telling …

Schoolyard Renovations In The Context Of Urban Greening: Insight From The Boston Schoolyard Initiative, Boston, Massachusetts, Katherine A. Tooke
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Twenty years ago the public schoolyards in Boston, Massachusetts were in a deplorable state: most were entirely paved, seriously neglected and used predominantly for parking. Since 1995, the Boston Schoolyards Initiative (BSI) has worked to transform these spaces into vibrant environments of recreation and learning. Renovations typically include adding play structures, gardens, murals and seating that can engage children at recess or support an educational activity. Recent research has shown that BSI renovations have had a positive impact on student academic performance (Lopez, Jennings and Campbell, 2008), but little attention has yet focused on how these revived and greened spaces …

The $15+ Billion "Big Dig", replaced Boston's deteriorating six-lane elevated Central Artery, known as the Green monster, with a widened highway tunnel running underground through Downtown Boston and crossing the Charles River, creating more than 27 acres of new land area for reuse in Downtown Boston.
Today, a significant portion of the land has been turned into a system of parks known as the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. Since its completion in 2008, five civic and recreational developments planned for the Greenway have been abandoned due to poor funding, rising construction estimates, and a general lack of support. Disconnected, under-programmed …

Revitalizing Mumbai Textile Mill Lands For The City, Vinay Surve
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Cities are always in transition and so the city’s Architecture should respond to it. Transition brings opportunities of growth, expansion, improvement in social and urban fabric along with new development strategies. My thesis explores the current trend of textile mills development in the heart of the city of Mumbai, its drawbacks and proposes a development plan for a mill premise for the benefit of the city. It is an attempt to preserve the city’s old fabric, which at one time was a city in itself and merge its fabric with the new development in a cohesive manner.

An Analysis Of Defensible Space And Crime Prevention Through Design In Crime Hotspots Of Select Boston Neighborhoods, Mario Teran
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
There is a lack of emphasis in the planning world, both academically and in the field, on preventing crime. Defensible Space and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) has been the two main approaches taken by planners and criminal justice officials that is design-based and that has brought some level of collaboration between the two professions. This study will analyze the built environment of select crime hotspots in the city of Boston from a design-based crime prevention perspective in order to draw correlations between high crime areas and elements of design-based theories.
