Placing Immigrant Incorporation: Identity, Trust, And Civic Engagement In Little Havana, Richard N. Gioioso 2010 Florida International University

Placing Immigrant Incorporation: Identity, Trust, And Civic Engagement In Little Havana, Richard N. Gioioso

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Immigrant incorporation in the United States has been a topic of concern and debate since the founding of the nation. Scholars have studied many aspects of the phenomenon, including economic, political, social, and spatial. The most influential paradigm of immigrant incorporation in the US has been, and continues to be, assimilation, and the most important place in and scale at which incorporation occurs is the neighborhood. This dissertation captures both of these integral aspects of immigrant incorporation through its consideration of three dimensions of assimilation – identity, trust, and civic engagement – among Latin American immigrants and American-born Latinos in …

Influence Of Job Accessibility On Housing Market Processes: Study Of Spatial Stationarity In The Buffalo And Seattle Metropolitan Areas, Sungsoon Hwang, Jean-Claude Thill 2010 DePaul University

Influence Of Job Accessibility On Housing Market Processes: Study Of Spatial Stationarity In The Buffalo And Seattle Metropolitan Areas, Sungsoon Hwang, Jean-Claude Thill

Sungsoon Hwang

The impact of job accessibility on housing prices is examined in the Buffalo and Seattle metropolitan areas using a hedonic regression modeling framework. Global hedonic regression results show that job accessibility is positively associated with housing price in the two study areas. Local hedonic regression modeling is also conducted to test whether the response of the housing market to job accessibility is spatially stationary. The statistical analysis reveals that the role of job accessibility in the house price-setting process varies locally in each metropolitan area. Empirical challenges with unraveling relationship between transportation and land use, and the policy implications of …

Urban Dynamics In The Las Vegas Valley: Neighborhood Casinos And Sprawl, Pascale Nédélec 2010 Université de Lyon

Urban Dynamics In The Las Vegas Valley: Neighborhood Casinos And Sprawl, Pascale Nédélec

Occasional Papers

Las Vegas is well known for its urban sprawl. While the casino industry has played an obvious role in the development of Las Vegas, no systematic study has evaluated the exact nature of urban growth and the rise of neighborhood casinos. This paper argues that neighborhood casinos, contrary to tourist‐oriented casinos, are not urban forces that drive the growth of an urban area but reinforce the status quo of residential developments. Neighborhood casinos have nevertheless become a major asset in the economic and social building of residential developments and community life.

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

This report presents the results of a demographic study conducted by the Portland State University Population Research Center (PRC). The study includes analysis of population, housing and enrollment trends affecting the Sherwood School District (SSD) in recent years and forecasts of district-wide and individual school enrollments for the 2010-11 to 2014-15 school years. Total K-12 enrollment in the District increased by 215 students (4.7 percent) between Fall 2008 and Fall 2009, reaching 4,748 students. For the fourth consecutive year, percentage gains were greater at both of the secondary levels than at the elementary level, as the students who contributed to …

Making The Invisible Visible: A Geospatial History Of The Japanese-American Community In Tacoma, Washington 1888 To 1942, Judith A. Jones

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Prior to World War II, the urban core area of Tacoma, Washington served as the hub of a culturally rich Japanese-American community. Beginning in the late 1880’s, the booming railroad, timber, and agriculture industries attracted workers to this region, including many Japanese immigrants. Tacoma’s “Japantown” or Nihon Machiencompassed the area between 11thand 19thStreets and Pacific and Tacoma Avenues. Japantownexperienced its zenith between 1900 and 1920. After 1920, “it began a slow decline, culminating with the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II” (Morrison 2, 41,42). This once culturally dynamic area is now in need of recognition and preservation. The …

Community Gardens And Urban Agriculture: Reclaiming The Market Place, Sara Prendergast 2010 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Community Gardens And Urban Agriculture: Reclaiming The Market Place, Sara Prendergast

Social Sciences

This paper will first explore the health of low-income communities living in inner cities. I will use obesity as one of the main indicators of poor health and explore the lack of access to holistic diets, high costs of fresh foods, and minimal education, with the aim of revealing how hunger is a consequence of a capitalist dominated market. Following, I will investigate how urban agriculture is a holistic solution in subduing the advent of food deserts and food insecurity by serving health, educational, and social needs in low-income communities, which further creates a more socially just market.

Youth Perspectives On Community Assets And Geography In Puyallup, Wa, Nathan Stueve

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Youth poses a perspective of their communities that is unique, but not always acknowledged. The goal of this project was to examine how teenage residents in suburban Puyallup, WA perceive their surroundings. Some theoretical assumptions exist in background literature on this issue. Firstly, planners often design communities to prevent youth from engaging in deconstructive activities, not to allow them to engage in constructive activities. As a result, communities are often designed with fewer youth-oriented assets and venues. Fewer youth-oriented places to travel to will cause teens to be less physically active. In addition, youth perceptions of access to these …
