Alcohol Consumption And Body Weight, M T. French, E C. Norton, H Fang, J C. Maclean
Michael T. French
The number of Americans who are overweight or obese has reached epidemic proportions. Elevated weight is associated with health problems and increased medical expenditures. This paper analyzes Waves 1 and 2 of the National Epidemiological Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions to investigate the role of alcohol consumption in weight gain. Alcohol is not only an addictive substance but also a high-calorie beverage that can interfere with metabolic function and cognitive processes. Because men and women differ in the type and amount of alcohol they consume, in the biological effects they experience as a result of alcohol consumption, and in …

Victimization In Early Life And Mental Health In Adulthood: An Examination Of The Mediating And Moderating Influences Of Psychosocial Resources, Michael T. French, Terrence D. Hill, Lauren M. Kaplan, Robert J. Johnson
Michael T. French
Although numerous studies have documented the long-term effects of childhood victimization on mental health in adulthood, few have directly examined potential mediators and moderators of this association. Using data from the Welfare, Children, and Families project (1999)—a probability sample of 2,402 predominantly black and Hispanic low-income women with children living in Boston, Chicago, and San Antonio—we predict psychological distress in adulthood with measures of physical assault and sexual coercion before age 18. Building on previous research, we test the mediating and moderating influences of emotional support, instrumental support, and self-esteem. Although we observe no indirect effects of physical assault, the …

Differential Association Theory And Juvenile Delinquency In Ghana’S Capital City - Accra: The Case Of Ghana Borstal Institute, Thomas Antwi Bosiakoh, Paul Kofi Andoh
Dr Thomas ANTWI BOSIAKOH
Current sociological theories argue that, delinquency results from economic and family relational problems. Unable to have their parents meet their material needs, children turn to all sorts of activities, many of which eventually lead to delinquent acts. Other theories focus on the role of peer relationships in determining deviancy. Using Edwin Sutherland’s differential association theory, this study explores the notion that, delinquency in inmates of the Ghana borstal institute is a reflection of the peer groups/friendship relations they hanged out with. Data for the study were collected from the Ghana borstal institute, a correctional institution for reforming juvenile offenders with …

State Policy, Depeasantisation And Agrarian Change: The Effects Of The Presidential Special Initiative (Psi) On Cassava-Starch On Peasant Farmers’ Socio-Economic Livelihood, Paul Kofi Andoh, Thomas Antwi Bosiakoh
Dr Thomas ANTWI BOSIAKOH
This study focuses on the interface between state policy initiatives, the process of depeasantisation and agrarian change, using the Presidential Special Initiative on Cassava-Starch as a case. Employing both quantitative and qualitative data gathering techniques, primary data were collected from six farming communities in the Awutu-Effutu-Senya and Atebubu-Amantin districts of the Central and Brong Ahafo regions of Ghana. The analysis of primary data revealed that with the right policy initiatives by the state, it is possible to systematically incorporate peasant farmers into mainstream economy and to improve their socio-economic livelihoods. To this extent, the study recommends among others that given …

Leadership And Membership Structure Of Migrant Associations: The Case Of Nigerian Migrant Associations In Accra, Ghana, Thomas Antwi Bosiakoh
Dr Thomas ANTWI BOSIAKOH
Migrant associations are a worldwide phenomenon, featuring in much of the migration studies literature. However, much of these studies focus on migrant associations in theUSA mostly of Latino migrants from Central and Latin America. In Africa and more particularly Ghana, literature on migrant associations is paltry. The few that exist only explore their development impacts on the migration sending areas. In this paper, I explore three Nigerian migrant associations in Accra, Ghana. The leadership and membership structures of the Nigerian Women, Nigerian Committee of Brothers and the Edo State associations in Accra, Ghana are under the spotlight of this discourse. …

XXI

Direito, Utopia E Insularidade, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Virtude Da Constituição E Virtudes Republicanas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Economic Evaluation Of A Pre-Release Substance Abuse Treatment Program For Repeat Criminal Offenders, Michael T. French, Hai Fang, Ralph Fretz
Michael T. French
Substance use disorders are common conditions among repeat criminal offenders. Without addressing these underlying substance use behaviors, parolees are significantly more likely to recidivate within 1 year of release. New Jersey is one of the first states to actively pursue substance abuse treatment options for inmates who are in the final stages of their sentences. Given the fiscal realities of taxpayer-supported programs, such initiatives must clearly demonstrate economic benefits for sustainability and growth. This article conducted one of the few comprehensive economic evaluations of prerelease substance abuse treatment to determine whether Community Education Centers' programs in New Jersey generated desirable …

GOAL. To analyze the theoretical underpinnings of safety culture and to provide an assessment about the state of safety culture research in healthcare. METHODS. First, we reviewed the concept of safety culture, including its origination, disciplinary influences, and associated theoretical tenets. By describing the literature and discussing the interchangeable use of the terms “safety attitude,” “safety climate,” and “safety culture,” we are able to present the conceptual attributes associated with safety culture and present a definition of safety culture. Then, we discuss the psychometric properties for the most widely used instruments in healthcare. The article concludes with a discussion of …

Safety Culture As A Contemporary Healthcare Construct: Theoretical Review, Research Assessment, And Translation To Human Resource Management., Patrick Albert Palmieri

Through a number of comprehensive reviews, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has recommended that healthcare organizations develop safety cultures in order to align delivery system processes with the workforce requirements to improve patient outcomes. Until health systems can provide safer care environments, patients remain at risk for suboptimal care and adverse outcomes. Health science researchers have begun to explore how safety cultures might act as an essential system feature to improve organizational outcomes. Since safety cultures are established via modification in employee safety perspective and work behavior, human resource professionals need to contribute to this developing organizational domain. The IOM …

Place For Personhood: Individual And Local Character In Lifestyle Migration, Brian A. Hoey

While drawing on literature of narrative interpretations of the construction of self and place-based, embodied identity, this article will explore the impact of invasive market forces on intertwined processes of person, self, and place-making. It considers how resources for these projects have changed in the face of translocal market forces and neoliberal ideals. Despite numerous proclamations of an essential placelessness to contemporary American society, place continues to be a basic part of the construction of the person. In fact, a variety of place-making practices are increasingly pursued as ways of negotiating tension between personal experience with material demands in pursuit …
