Office Of Service-Learning, Lingnan University

OSL Book / Book Chapter / Manual

The Lived Experience Of Empowered Volunteers: A Study Of Christian Church Volunteers, Adam K. Peters

Theses, Dissertations, & Student Scholarship: Agricultural Leadership, Education & Communication Department

Psychological empowerment has been thoroughly studied in the workplace context. Volunteerism has also been thoroughly studied through a multitude of different facets. However, little research could be found bridging the empowerment construct into volunteerism. Therefore, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the experience of empowerment among volunteers. Volunteer empowerment was discovered through four primary themes, make a difference, rewarding, lifestyle of service, and passion, and three secondary themes, autonomy, awareness, and ability. Other relevant findings included and revolved around volunteer time and balance, challenges, propelling forces, and getting started. Current literature was reviewed and incorporated into the ...

Developing Cultural Understanding Through Spanish-Language Learning: A Service-Learning Approach, Glenn A. Bowen PhD, Patricia B. Hackett 2010 Barry University

Developing Cultural Understanding Through Spanish-Language Learning: A Service-Learning Approach, Glenn A. Bowen Phd, Patricia B. Hackett

Glenn A Bowen PhD

This article describes the service-learning component of two intermediate Spanish-language courses and presents the findings of a qualitative study that examined the nexus between language learning and cultural understanding. The service-learning component was designed to enrich the curriculum and enhance academic learning while providing significant service to the local Hispanic community. An inductive analysis of the qualitative data yielded three themes: social interaction, a dual sense of reality, and tolerance and understanding. The research revealed that service learning helps university students develop cultural understanding while facilitating language acquisition. Implications of the findings for language teaching and learning are discussed.

Death Of A Dream Service-Learning: 1994-2010: A Historical Analysis By One Of The Dreamers, Don Hill

Service Learning, General

This essay was written in 1994 to stimulate discussion about issues that I felt threatened the efforts of the service-learning community to effectively expand with high-quality programs. It was based on my observations as a person involved in providing professional development support to teachers and education professors. — Don Hill, October 2005

Service-Learning And Authenticity Achievement, John W. Murphy, Dana Rasch 2010 University of Miami

Service-Learning And Authenticity Achievement, John W. Murphy, Dana Rasch

Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge

In the current Age of Globalization a neo-liberal ideology has come to the forefront, and scholars have pointed out that the effect of this market-oriented approach on society has been catastrophic. In particular, many argue that the field of education is producing self-absorbed students, as each individual simply prepares to enter the labor market. Moreover, the emphasis on individualism has destroyed any sense of community solidarity. In the end, these outcomes have resulted in inauthentic behavior; that is, people simply treat one another as a means to gain access to the marketplace. However, in the field of education, service-learning— which ...

In Search Of Something More: My Path Towards International Service-Learning In Engineering Education, Margaret Pinnell

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

My personal and professional travels led me toward global education, in particular the University of Dayton (UD) program Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities for Service-Learning (ETHOS). I do not believe I ever intended to become part of an international engineering education program. In fact, I think the international piece was just a bonus. What really drew me to the ETHOS program was what initially draws our students to the program - a desire to "help" people. In order for the reader to understand how I ended up being involved in global education through the ETHOS program, I must first explain where ...
