Choosing The Best: A Rhetorical Analysis And Discussion Of An Abstinence-Centered Sexuality Education Curriculum, Carolyn Buonomo 2017 Kennesaw State University

Choosing The Best: A Rhetorical Analysis And Discussion Of An Abstinence-Centered Sexuality Education Curriculum, Carolyn Buonomo

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

This rhetorical analysis examines Choosing the Best Journey, a Choosing the Best, LLC student manual targeted at ninth and tenth grade students, and testimonials from the company’s website to provide insight about the ways in which the company’s curricula position women. In what way does this content position women in relation to men? Does the curriculum position women as those who both hold the responsibility for preventing and bearing the burden of premarital sexual activity? In what ways does this content work to reinforce gender stereotypes? By answering these questions, I am able to determine whether the curriculum ...

The Stories We Tell, Abigail A. Hoekstra 2017 James Madison University

The Stories We Tell, Abigail A. Hoekstra

MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference

Two or Three Things I Know for Sure tells the story of Dorothy Allison as she comes to terms with her past and strives to move beyond it, to be empowered and embodied by it. In this short memoir, Allison explores the relationship she has with her mother and how that relationship has influenced her individuality and character, whose complacency has restricted Allison. Allison breaks away from the stories she has been told to tell a new story of abuse and disembodiment in which she finds love, and in turn, embodiment; the unification of her body and spirit. Story-telling and ...

Female Moments / Male Structures: The Representation Of Women In Romantic Comedies, Jordan A. Scharaga 2017 Ursinus College

Female Moments / Male Structures: The Representation Of Women In Romantic Comedies, Jordan A. Scharaga

Media and Communication Studies Honors Papers

Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again. With this formula it seems that romantic comedies are actually meant for men instead of women. If this is the case, then why do women watch these films? The repetition of female stars like Katharine Hepburn, Doris Day and Meg Ryan in romantic comedies allows audiences to find elements of truth in their characters as they grapple with the input of others in their life choices, combat the anxiety of being single, and prove they are less sexually naïve than society would like to admit. In 1999, a character struggles ...

Necessary But Not Sufficient: The Continuing Inequality Between Men And Women In Educational Leadership, Findings From The Aasa Mid-Decade Survey, Kerry Robinson, Charol Shakeshaft, Margaret Grogan, Whitney Sherman Newcomb 2017 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Necessary But Not Sufficient: The Continuing Inequality Between Men And Women In Educational Leadership, Findings From The Aasa Mid-Decade Survey, Kerry Robinson, Charol Shakeshaft, Margaret Grogan, Whitney Sherman Newcomb

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The gender of school leaders makes a difference in career paths, personal life, and characteristics of workplace. There is additional evidence that men and women are appointed or elected to lead different kinds of educational jurisdictions. Even if those differences did not exist, equitable access to leadership positions for people of different backgrounds would make this an important issue. This article reports gender-related findings from the American Association of School Administrators 2015 Mid-Decade Survey. Findings confirm many of the trends in research on the superintendency over the past 15 years. The profiles of women superintendents are becoming more like their ...

The Limits Of The Representative Text: Women On The Margins In Rudolfo Anaya's "Bless Me, Ultima", Kayleigh Rhatigan 2017 Dickinson College

The Limits Of The Representative Text: Women On The Margins In Rudolfo Anaya's "Bless Me, Ultima", Kayleigh Rhatigan

Research on Women, Gender, and Sexuality by Students (ROWGS)

Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me, Ultima (1972) is lauded as a classic of Chican@ literature and widely used in secondary and higher education as a representative Chican@ text. However, the novel depicts its female characters stereotypically and denies them agency and voice. The novel’s centering of masculinity reveals the problematic nature of curricula that use Ultima to represent all of Chican@ literature and culture. I read Ultima through a feminist lens and apply Jodi Melamed’s 2011 book Represent and Destroy to connect Ultima to the canon wars of the 1980s and issues of representation. Based on teaching guides ...

Issues Of Racial, Ethnic, And Gender Diversity In Preparing School Administrators, Carolyn Ridenour, Patricia F. First, Angela Lydon, Michelle C. Partlow 2017 University of Dayton

Issues Of Racial, Ethnic, And Gender Diversity In Preparing School Administrators, Carolyn Ridenour, Patricia F. First, Angela Lydon, Michelle C. Partlow

Carolyn S. Ridenour

The four authors teach in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of Dayton. Each taught a new course that addressed issues of diversity in schools, focusing on race, ethnicity, and gender. Each developed the course in a unique way and in distinct settings, though each involved: 1. Reflecting holistically on the experience of teaching the course in order to generate common themes explaining what the experience meant to the faculty as individuals and as women (Blackmore & Kenway, 1993). 2. Examining students' work, behaviors, communication, and attitudes in order to infer level of, as well as changes in, racial ...
