A State Aggregation Approach For Stochastic Multiperiod Last-Mile Ride-Sharing Problems, Lucas AGUSSURJA, Shih-Fen CHENG, Hoong Chuin LAU 2018 Singapore Management University

A State Aggregation Approach For Stochastic Multiperiod Last-Mile Ride-Sharing Problems, Lucas Agussurja, Shih-Fen Cheng, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Information Systems

The arrangement of last-mile services is playing an increasingly important role in making public transport more accessible. We study the use of ridesharing in satisfying last-mile demands with the assumption that demands are uncertain and come in batches. The most important contribution of our paper is a two-level Markov decision process framework that is capable of generating a vehicle-dispatching policy for the aforementioned service. We introduce state summarization, representative states, and sample-based cost estimation as major approximation techniques in making our approach scalable. We show that our approach converges and solution quality improves as sample size increases. We also apply ...

Design And Implementation Of Decision Support For Traffic Management At Multipurpose Port Gates, Ketki Vijay KULKARNI, Hoong Chuin LAU, Hai WANG, SIVABALASINGAM Sathyavarathan, Trong Khiem TRAN 2018 Singapore Management University

Design And Implementation Of Decision Support For Traffic Management At Multipurpose Port Gates, Ketki Vijay Kulkarni, Hoong Chuin Lau, Hai Wang, Sivabalasingam Sathyavarathan, Trong Khiem Tran

Effective traffic management can help port operators gain a competitive edge in service level and efficient use of limited resources. One critical aspect of traffic management is gate operations management, ensuring a good customer experience to logistic carriers and considering the impact of congestion in and around the port. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a decision support tool to help gate operators plan for future scenarios with fluctuating demand and limited resources. We propose a simulation optimization framework which incorporates theoretical results from queuing theory to approximate complex multi-lane multi-server systems. Our major contribution in ...

The Influence Of Shared Mobility And Transportation Policies On Vehicle Ownership, Edgar Bertini Ruas 2018 Portland State University

The Influence Of Shared Mobility And Transportation Policies On Vehicle Ownership, Edgar Bertini Ruas

TREC Friday Seminar Series

With the emergence of several new providers of shared mobility services, such as Uber, Biketown and Car2go, there has been the promise of changes to the traditional way of owning and using a vehicle. One potential consequence of the new mobility services is the reduction in vehicle ownership. At the same time, cities are trying to anticipate these changes by reducing the amount of space dedicated to parking. This thesis aims to asses the extent to which new shared mobility and transportation policy strategies (especially parking requirements and transit pass availability) relate to vehicle ownership among residents of multifamily dwellings ...

Webinar: Segmenting The Market For Transportation Demand Management Campaigns, Philip L. Winters, Amy Lester 2018 University of South Florida

Webinar: Segmenting The Market For Transportation Demand Management Campaigns, Philip L. Winters, Amy Lester

TREC Webinar Series

Social marketing seeks to develop and integrate marketing concepts with other approaches to influence behaviors that benefit individuals and communities for the greater social good. It is a useful transportation demand management (TDM) planning approach to promote travel behavior change. The purpose of this study was to explore a consumer market segmentation technique successfully used in Europe for its applicability to marketing efforts in the United States. Attitudinal and demographic data were collected from 1900 individuals in Florida, Oregon, and Virginia modeled after the European approach. Clustering analysis was applied to divide the sample into segments so that members of ...

Scenarios For Adoption Of Autonomous Vehicle Technologies In Freight, Sabya Mishra 2018 University of Memphis

Scenarios For Adoption Of Autonomous Vehicle Technologies In Freight, Sabya Mishra

TREC Friday Seminar Series

Innovation adoption research has largely ignored organizational adoption, and little work has been done to understand or predict the adoption of innovations by freight organizations. Among the existing innovation adoption theoretical and methodological approaches this seminar will explore which are most appropriate methods for freight organizational adoption. The seminar will present a disaggregate market penetration model for freight transportation organizations adopting connected autonomous vehicle (CAV) technology and demonstrate an application using a case study area in Memphis, TN. The seminar will highlight ongoing and future organizational adoption research for CAVs, and other innovations.

A Simple Approach For Sustainable Transportation Systems In Smart Cities: A Graph Theory Model, Quinn Nelson, Donald Steffensmeier, Sachin Pawaskar 2018 University of Nebraska at Omaha

A Simple Approach For Sustainable Transportation Systems In Smart Cities: A Graph Theory Model, Quinn Nelson, Donald Steffensmeier, Sachin Pawaskar

Sachin Pawaskar

The idea of public transportation is supported by most in theory but often heavily criticized by users when put into application. There are common tensions that are related to public transportation, as described by frequent users: unreliable, too crowded, and slow. The University of Nebraska-Omaha (UNO) is a growing metropolitan
institution that uses a shuttle system to transport students among their three campuses daily. As of 2015, the current total student enrollment is approximately 16,000; UNO plans to enroll 20,000 students by 2020. The expected student growth is also reflected by the current construction of new buildings and ...

Flag State Performance And The Implementation Of Port State Control In The European Union - A Mixed Methods Approach, Armando Graziano 2018 World Maritime University

Flag State Performance And The Implementation Of Port State Control In The European Union - A Mixed Methods Approach, Armando Graziano

World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations

The implementation and enforcement of international maritime safety standards by Member States has always represented a key objective for both the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the European Commission (EC). In spite of a strong global legal framework for safety at sea, harmonisation has always been a challenge. Two points are relevant here: firstly, the level of implementation and enforcement with international regulations varies significantly among countries; secondly, it is a challenge to determine and/or quantify this level of compliance.

Several attempts have been made by the maritime industry, academic studies and policy-makers to develop an appropriate set of ...

Building A National Maritime Security Policy, Adriana Avila-Zúñiga Nordfjeld

World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations

The issue of port security raised concerns at the highest levels after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 against the United States. Security threats against ports and vessels acquired a new perspective and in 2002 the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, introducing Chapter XI-2 - Special measures to enhance maritime security. This set of regulations enshrines the International Ship and Port Facilities Security Code (ISPS Code), which entered into force on 1 July 2004.

This Code establishes a set of measures to enhance the security of ...

Portland’S Transportation Wallet: How Pricing Parking Can Create New Mobility Options, Sarah Goforth 2018 Portland Bureau of Transportation

Portland’S Transportation Wallet: How Pricing Parking Can Create New Mobility Options, Sarah Goforth

TREC Friday Seminar Series

The Transportation Wallet is one of Portland’s newest parking and transportation demand management (TDM) strategies, designed to reduce parking demand while simultaneously offering new mobility options by bundling transit and bike share passes into one consumer product. Two of Portland’s managed parking districts have elected to add a surcharge to the cost of on-street parking permits, a portion of which is used to subsidize the cost of the Transportation Wallet. Residents and employees in the parking districts are eligible to purchase the Transportation Wallet at a fraction of the retail cost. As an added incentive to increase parking ...
