Le Politiche Industriali Del Xxi Secolo, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

Innovation And Employment: A Reinvestigation Using Revised Pavitt Classes, Mario Pianta, Francesco Bogliacino

Mario Pianta

The relationship between innovation and employment is addressed in this article through a model and empirical test at industry level for eight European countries in 1994–2004. We investigate this relationship for manufacturing and services and propose a Revised Pavitt taxonomy (covering both of them) in order to identify specific patterns of technological change and job creation and loss. The contrasting effects of strategies of technological or cost competitiveness are investigated using innovation variables from CIS2 and CIS3. Together with demand, wages and industry dynamics, they account for changes in employees and hours worked. The diversity in these relations across ...

Industria E Innovazione, Il Ritorno Delle Politiche, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

Índice De Calidad Institucional 2010, Martin E. Krause Dr. 2010 University of Buenos Aires

Índice De Calidad Institucional 2010, Martin E. Krause Dr.

Martin Krause

Gift Giving And The Creation Of Trust, Martin Mathews 2010 University of Westminster

Gift Giving And The Creation Of Trust, Martin Mathews

Martin Mathews

We examine the role that gift giving plays in industrial districts and in particular the role of gift giving in the creation of inter-organisational trust. Inter-organisational exchanges in a mature industrial district are analyzed using Mauss’ theoretical framework of gift-giving, receiving and counter-giving. Actors in embedded network relationships frequently exchange gifts and favours. This gift giving is a fundamental part of the relationship. Gift giving is found to be instrumental in creating and maintaining relationships, defining group and individual identity and resolving conflicts. The originality of our findings lies in the fact that despite the ideology of the purely altruistic ...

Sprawl, Squatters, And Sustainable Cities: Can Archaeological Data Shed Light On Modern Urban Issues?, Michael E. Smith

Michael E Smith

Ancient cities as documented by archaeologists and historians have considerable relevance for a broader understanding of modern cities and general processes of urbanization. This article reviews three themes that illustrate such relevance: sprawl, squatter settlements and urban sustainability. Archaeology's potential for illuminating these and other topics, however, remains largely unrealized because we have failed to develop the concepts and methods required to analyse such processes in the past. The following aspects are examined for each of the three themes: the modern situation, the potential insights that archaeology could contribute, and what archaeologists would need to do to produce those ...

Assessing National Policies To Support Software In Europe, Timo Leimbach, Michael Friedewald 2010 Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research

Assessing National Policies To Support Software In Europe, Timo Leimbach, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

Software and Software Based Services (SSBS) are a major domain of the European ICT industry and is recognised as a key element in developing the Information Society. This article aims to shed light on the various strategies, policies and activities pursued by the EU and their member states. It is based upon a survey of national programmes that are aimed specifically or in substantial part at the software sector. This analysis and assessment usually face two challenges: (1) Unlike other technologies that have the same significance and/or the same attractiveness, the SSBS industry is a very dy- namic one ...

Sorting Out Smart Surveillance, David Wright, Michael Friedewald, Serge Gutwirth, Marc Langheinrich, Emilio Mordini, Rocco Bellanova, Paul De Hert, Kush Wadhwa, Didier Bigo

Michael Friedewald

Surveillance is becoming ubiquitous in our society. We can also see the emergence of “smart” surveillance technologies and the assemblages (or combinations) of such tech- nologies, supposedly to combat crime and terrorism, but in fact used for a variety of purposes, many of which are intrusive upon the privacy of law-abiding citizens. Following the dark days of 9/11, security and surveillance became paramount. More recently, in Europe, there has been a policy commitment to restore privacy to centre stage. This paper examines the legal tools available to ensure that privacy and personal data protection are respected in attempts to ...

Salud Y Felicidad En Uruguay, Maximo Rossi, Todd Jewell, Mariana Gerstenblüth 2010 Universidad del Uruguay - Departamento de Economía (dECON)

Salud Y Felicidad En Uruguay, Maximo Rossi, Todd Jewell, Mariana Gerstenblüth

Maximo Rossi

In this paper we study the relationship between individual happiness and self reported health status, using the Religion, Health and Young Emancipation ISSP survey for Uruguay in 2008. Probit estimates suggests that health status has the highest correlation with happiness. In order to control for the observed heterogeneity of this variable, we estimate using matching methods. Results show that reporting a good health rises the probability of being happy between 18 an 29 percentage points. Previous literature support this findings.
