Fiscal Sustainability In A Panel Of Asian Countries, 2009 University of Wales, Bangor
Fiscal Sustainability In A Panel Of Asian Countries, John Thornton
Panel cointegration techniques indicate that government revenue (REV) and expenditure (EXP) in a panel of five Asian economies for the period 1974 to 2001 were nonstationary and cointegrated series. However, the cointegration coefficient was significantly less than unity, indicating ‘weak’ fiscal sustainability and the likelihood that policy measures would be needed to put the public finances on a more sustainable basis

Identifying Central Actors: A Network Analysis Of The 2009-2010 Health Reform Debate, Jennifer Hayes Clark, Stacey Pelika, Elizabeth Rigby
Jennifer Hayes Clark
The fragmented design of American institutions intentionally diffuses authority among political actors. As a result, tracing the (often changing) distribution of power is essential to better understanding the policymaking process. In this paper, we capitalize on the current health care debate’s multidimensionality and its high salience, as reflected in the extensive media coverage it has attracted. Through network analysis of daily news articles from five news sources that vary in approach and audience, we assess the centrality of each Member of Congress to the health care debate in general, as well as at each stage of this recent policy ...

Asset Pricing Under Information-Processing Constraints, Yulei Luo, Eric R. Young
This paper studies the implications of limited information-processing capacity (also called "rational inattention") for asset pricing in a linear-quadratic permanent income model. We have two main results. First, RI increases the size of the risk adjustment to asset prices by increasing the volatility and persistence of consumption growth. Second, RI increases the expected excess return. Thus, RI has the potential to play an important role in resolving extant asset pricing puzzles.

The promise was discovered by the geometry of Mandelbrot covers a broad area of research fields, from meteorology and mathematical physics to the individual and collective behavior in society, besides his contributions to the analysis of the financial crisis in his wonderful essay on The (mis) Behavior of Markets. Philosophy And Information Studies, 2009 University of California, Los Angeles
Philosophy And Information Studies, Jonathan Furner
There are several scholarly activities and practices that coalesce at the intersection of, on the one hand, the interdisciplinary field that is sometimes known as information studies, and on the other, the discipline of philosophy. The aim of this chapter is to distinguish among some of these practices, to identify and review some of the most interesting products of those practices, and to point to ways of assessing the significance of those products—for information studies, for philosophy, and for our general understanding of the world. In the first section, an attempt is made to characterize the subject matter, methods ...

Where Book Art And Technology Mingle, Peter D. Verheyen, Richard Minsky
Peter D Verheyen
Interview of Peter D. Verheyen by Richard Minsky. Peter Verheyen, conservator, bookbinder, and creator of the Books Arts Web, discusses the current state of book arts. Although he creates impeccable fine bindings that have won international awards, Peter Verheyen's huge contribution to the field of book art has little to do with making or conserving physical books. His magum opus is the Book Arts Web (philobiblon.com), the main location on the Internet for book art information and resources, from online exhibitions to tutorials, opportunities, blogs, and reference materials.

Estimating Price Elasticity For Tobacco In Canada's Aboriginal Communities, Jesse A. Matheson
Jesse A Matheson
Exploiting a repeated cross-section created from the 1991 and 2001 waves of the Aboriginal Peoples Survey, I provide the first estimates of tobacco price elasticity for adults in Canada's Aboriginal communities. These communities are small and secluded, presenting a unique opportunity to look at the potential influence of community smoking norms on individual behavior. Specifically, I allow aggregate smoking behavior within the community to influence individual smoking behavior. I distinguish between two price effects: the direct effect, reflecting individual reaction to a price change; and the indirect effect, whereby price influences the individual by changing community smoking behavior. I ...

Success And Abandonment In Open Source Commons: Selected Findings From An Empirical Study Of Sourceforge.Net Projects, Charles M. Schweik, Robert English, Qimti Paienjton, Sandy Haire

Some open source software collaborations are sustained over long periods of time and across several versions of a software product, while others become abandoned even before the first version of the product has been developed. In this study, we identify factors that might be responsible for one or the other of these collaborative trajectories. We examine 107,747 open source software projects hosted on Sourceforge.net in August 2006 using data available through the FLOSSmole Project. We employ Classification and Regression Tree modeling and Random Forests statistical approaches to begin to establish an understanding of how various project attributes, especially ...
Does Teacher Preparation Matter? Pupil Academic Achievement And Teacher’S College Preparation, 2009 Florida State University
Does Teacher Preparation Matter? Pupil Academic Achievement And Teacher’S College Preparation, Patrick Leon Mason
Patrick L. Mason
This study examines whether there is differential productivity associated with teachers trained within Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University’s college of education relative to teachers trained in other colleges and schools affiliated with the same university. We also examined whether there is differential productivity associated with alternative majors within and between the college of education and other academic units. We measure the productivity of a teacher by the educational achievement of pupils assigned to that teacher during a given year. We find that among pupils taught by recent graduates of FAMU, there is greater academic achievement among elementary school pupils taught ...
