Combating Childhood Obesity In California, Janelle Borelli 2011 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Combating Childhood Obesity In California, Janelle Borelli

Social Sciences

Childhood obesity has become a major problem in Corporate America. Our youth’s health is at risk, the statistics are alarming, and childhood obesity is largely preventable. In order to solve the childhood obesity epidemic, government action, both state and federal, needs to be taken by passing nutrition standard laws. Also, the built environment should support an active lifestyle rather than one based on fast food and lack of exercise. Families should adopt a healthy lifestyle including having adequate fruits and vegetables at home along with exercising daily.

Better…Stronger…Faster: Improving Your Skills Through Self-Assessment, Michael Priehs

Library Scholarly Publications

As interlibrary loan librarians and paraprofessionals work to improve the speed, convenience, and visibility of the services we provide, we may often overlook the importance of our own involvement in the process. Taking an introspective look at your role and overall professional knowledge, with the intent to sharpen and enhance the services provided, can improve workflow and provide opportunities to promote interlibrary loan services to our institutions. Literature discusses the assessment of services and users, but has focused less on the professional’s skills. Assessing your knowledge of your library’s collection, measuring your processing times, and knowing where to find answers …

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Studio and Student Research and Creative Activity

This is one of five reports submitted for the LA497C Spring 2011 Senior Studio project.

The purpose of this report is to show the results of a partnership between the Town of Hatfield Massachusetts, and the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Massachusetts.

The Town of Hatfield initially approached the University for assistance in understanding the options available for Greenway development in Hatfield, while maintaining the charm and character the town is proud of.

In his ground-breaking book, Greenways for America, Author Charles Little (1990) provides a simple definition of a Greenway:

Hatfield, Massachusetts is a small town within the Pioneer Valley. With the Connecticut River to the east, Hatfield is spanned with extremely rich agriculture near the river and mountains in West Hatfield. The town is split into two major areas, separated by both geographical features, and major transportation routes that head from the North to the South. "What Are You Crying About? It's Not Your Real Job!” Emotional Labor And Communicative Sensemaking In Retail Customer Service Positions, Danielle M. Harkins 2011 DePaul University

"What Are You Crying About? It's Not Your Real Job!” Emotional Labor And Communicative Sensemaking In Retail Customer Service Positions, Danielle M. Harkins

College of Communication Master of Arts Theses

Using Tracy and Trethewey‟s (2005) crystallized self metaphor as a framework through which to view organizational identity, the researcher bridges connections between emotional labor, job performance, meaning of work and communicative sensemaking within the organizational context of a grocery store. The purpose of this study is to seek the potential strategies that employees of this specific grocery store chain use to make communicative sense of their everyday realities in order to "get through" the day, especially with the great deal of emotional labor that takes place on the job. The researcher utilizes a combination of face-to-face interviews and participant observation …

Executive Compensation: The Role Of Shari’A Compliance, William Martin, Karen Ahmed 2011 DePaul University

Executive Compensation: The Role Of Shari’A Compliance, William Martin, Karen Ahmed

Publications – Dreihaus College of Business

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this paper is to illuminate issues surrounding executive compensation as it relates to current understandings of Islamic business law. Methodology We review the emerging bodies of literature in the fields of executive compensation and opinions of stock options under Shari’a law. Findings It appears that the trend in offering employee stock options as part of a Shari’a compliant compensation package is acceptable in most cases, yet because of its close association with the more problematic idea of derivative transactions, the company must be vigilant in obtaining the approval from its Shari’a Standards Board before offering …

Emigrant Effects On Bilateral Trade: Reexamining The Immigrant-Trade Link From The Home Country Perspective, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse 2011 Franklin & Marshall College

Emigrant Effects On Bilateral Trade: Reexamining The Immigrant-Trade Link From The Home Country Perspective, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

A voluminous literature examines the immigrant-trade link. Available studies evaluate the link largely from the host country perspective and generally indicate that immigrants exert positive influences on trade between their host and home countries. Few studies, however, explore the effects of emigrants on trade. Using data representing the stocks of emigrants from 131 home countries that resided in 110 host countries during the year 2005, we examine the immigrant/emigrant-trade link from both the home country perspective and the host country perspective. Doing so, we provide the first comprehensive estimates of pro-trade emigrant effects for each home country in our study.

Public Education And The Public Good, Anthony Ashbolt 2011 University of Wollongong

Public Education And The Public Good, Anthony Ashbolt

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

When Julia Gillard became Minister for Education and Everything Else That Moves, as well as de facto Prime Minister, she expressed a desire to have a conversation about school funding. This politics of inclusion (social inclusion is one of her many portfolios after all) was short-lived and it became clear that conversation was code for acceptance of the status quo. So Julia went off and had a conversation of her own with utopian dreamers whose vision of the good society revolves around testing regimes, job credentialism, disciplinary control of schools (particularly teachers), and whose heights of ecstasy are only achieved …

Impact Of The Cyprus Problem On Cfsp And Regional Power Transition In Europe, Birol A. Yeşilada 2011 Portland State University

Impact Of The Cyprus Problem On Cfsp And Regional Power Transition In Europe, Birol A. Yeşilada

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mathematicians posited that a “butterfly effect”might be present in complex interactions. Relationships between Power Transition in Europe, the future of European Union’s (EU) Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), and protracted Cyprus conflict are examples of this phenomenon. On the one hand, findings from Power Transition analysis indicate significant shift in global and regional hierarchies where the EU is expected to fall behind its global competitions –namely China, the United States, and India (Tammen et al, 2000; Yesilada, Efird, and Noordijk 2006). On the other hand, closer this “rising threat of China” can be postponed by a deeper degree of …

Obama's Failed Attempt To Close Gitmo: Why Executive Orders Can't Bring About Systemic Change, Erin B. Corcoran 2011 University of New Hampshire School of Law

Obama's Failed Attempt To Close Gitmo: Why Executive Orders Can't Bring About Systemic Change, Erin B. Corcoran

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “In the lead up to the 2008 Presidential election, there was broad bipartisan support for closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. President Bush was quoted as saying, “I’d like it to be over with.” John McCain and General Colin Powell echoed similar sentiments for ending detention at the naval base. In addition to prominent Republicans calling for closure, public opinion began to support finding alternative solutions for prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay.

Barack Obama wasted no time once sworn into office executing his central campaign promises. On January 22, 2009, two days after becoming the forty-fourth President of …

Procedural Justice Post-9/11: The Effects Of Procedurally Unfair Treatment Of Detainees On Perceptions Of Global Legitimacy, David Welsh

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “The Global War on Terror has been ideologically framed as a struggle between the principles of freedom and democracy on the one hand and tyranny and extremism on the other. Although this war has arguably led to a short-term disruption of terrorist threats such as al-Qaeda, it has also damaged America’s image both at home and abroad. Throughout the world, there is a growing consensus that America has “a lack of credibility as a fair and just world leader.” The perceived legitimacy of the United States in the War on Terror is critical because terrorism is not a conventional …

Guantanamo And Beyond: Reflections On The Past, Present, And Future Of Preventive Detention, Kristine A. Huskey 2011 National Security Clinic at The University of Texas School of Law; Author, "Justice at Guantánamo: One Woman’s Odyssey and Her Crusade for Human Rights"

Guantanamo And Beyond: Reflections On The Past, Present, And Future Of Preventive Detention, Kristine A. Huskey

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “January 11, 2011 began the tenth year of existence of the detention center at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (“Guantanamo” or “GTMO”). In human-being terms, what this means is that large numbers of men have been detained by the U.S. military for almost a decade, in prison-like conditions, without trial. In a pre-9/11 world, a “Guantanamo” and the idea of “detention without trial” would have been seen as decidedly un-American and a violation of our democratic values. Over the last decade, however, Guantanamo” and the practice of long-term detention without trial for terrorism suspects (or, “preventive …
