Language, Education, And Empowerment: Voices Of Kumauni Young Women In Multilingual India, Cynthia Groff

Publicly Accessible Penn Dissertations

My research explores the language and education situation in the Kumaun region of North India from the perspectives of rural Kumauni young women and in light of their views on empowerment and their aims for the future. My questions address language and education issues in the Kumaun 1) in relation to national policies and local ideologies, 2) as experienced and negotiated by young women, and 3) as applied in a unique Gandhian educational context. Based at Lakshmi Ashram, a Gandhian boarding school serving disadvantaged girls, I used ethnographic methods, focusing on a group of Kumauni young women. National-level language planning …

Response To Tesol's Position Statement On The Linguistic Rights Of Deaf Students, Sarah Compton

Sarah Compton

This piece responds to TESOL's position statement on the linguistic rights of deaf students to develop proficiency in both native signed and spoken languages. The statement lays a foundation upon which both English language teaching professionals and deaf education practitioners can build a partnership to advocate for deaf students’ linguistic rights and promote multilingual education programs for deaf students and all learners of English.

Identidade E Representação Em Pequenas Estórias: O Caso De Imigrantes Brasileiros, Mércia Regina Santana Flannery 2010 University of Pennsylvania

Identidade E Representação Em Pequenas Estórias: O Caso De Imigrantes Brasileiros, Mércia Regina Santana Flannery

Departmental Papers (Romance Languages)

How Esol Teachers Become Aware Of Communicative Peace, Josette LeBlanc 2010 SIT Graduate Institute

How Esol Teachers Become Aware Of Communicative Peace, Josette Leblanc

MA TESOL Collection

This paper examines the implications that the relationship between teacher language awareness and communicative peace may have on educational programs for teachers of English for speakers of other languages (ESOL). The evaluation begins by analyzing proposals set out by the applied peace linguist Francisco Gomes de Matos, who suggests that ESOL teachers should teach communicative peace as an element of communicative competence, and also that education programs should provide training to support this approach. By juxtaposing current literature on structural and linguistic violence with Gomes de Matos' classroom techniques, the hypothesis is made that teachers who would teach communicative peace …

/Ae/ And /E/ In El Paso English, Lance Levi Williams

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The production and perception of front vowels /ae/ and /e/ by El Paso residents was examined in a pilot study to begin to establish linguistic variables in an understudied yet dynamic speech community and explore the question of the unity of the speech community and possible influence of L2 English speakers on L1 English speakers. 25 subjects, males age 19 to 34, were given both tests of perception and production, and these results were analyzed with respect to their social and linguistic backgrounds. In general, subjects in the Anglo group appeared to be more united in their production and perception …

Implementing Language Policy For Deaf Students From Spanish-Speaking Homes: The Case Of Agents In A Texas School District, Sarah Compton 2009 University of Jyväskylä

Implementing Language Policy For Deaf Students From Spanish-Speaking Homes: The Case Of Agents In A Texas School District, Sarah Compton

Sarah Compton

Language policy implementation is a complex, multilayered process that produces both planned and unplanned outcomes. Understanding the policy implementation process can be achieved by identifying the agents, layers, and processes of language planning and policy activities, analyzing the layers independently, and examining the relationships among the layers. With respect to deaf education policy, such a multidimensional approach calls for attention to federal, state, and district guidelines as well as to how individuals act as policy-implementing agents when determining appropriate educational contexts for deaf students. Considering these dimensions, this thesis begins by explicating how U.S. special education policy functions as de …

Acquisition Of Spanish Gender Agreement In Two Learning Contexts: Study Abroad And At Home, Christina Isabelli 2009 Illinois Wesleyan University

Acquisition Of Spanish Gender Agreement In Two Learning Contexts: Study Abroad And At Home, Christina Isabelli

Christina Isabelli

The goal of this study is to describe the acquisition rate for gender acquisition in Spanish and to show whether individual variability and language contact may affect this rate. The participants were intermediate second language Spanish (first language English) learners in the study abroad and at-home contexts over a 4-month period. The participants received grammaticality judgment tests coded for morphological class of the modified noun as well as attributive and predicative adjectives. Data were also collected on social behavior and language contact in Spanish and English in order to explain data outcome. The findings suggest that no difference exists between …
