Library Subscriptions And Open Access: Highlights From The University Of California Negotiations With Elsevier, Cory Tucker, Andrea Wirth, Annette Day
Library Faculty Publications
On February 28, 2019, the University of California (UC) System announced the cancellation of their $50 million journal subscription deal with Elsevier. The impetus behind the UC decision comes from two issues. Firstly, the increasing costs of journal subscriptions in a landscape where library budgets remain flat. Secondly, the effort to shift the journal publishing model away from subscriptions to a sustainable open access model. The following paper will provide background on issues with the scholarly communication process, academic library budgets and open access initiatives. Additional information will focus on the impact of journal subscription deals with large commercial publishers …

For many years, the academic and research library workforce has worked to accelerate the transition to more open and equitable systems of scholarship. While significant progress has been made, barriers remain. The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) seeks to stimulate further advances through this action- oriented research agenda, which is designed to provide practical, actionable information for academic librarians; include the perspectives of historically underrepresented communities in order to expand the profession’s understanding of research environments and scholarly communication systems; and point librarians and other scholars toward important research questions to investigate. This report represents a yearlong process …

Attention To Detail, Attention To Value: Building Additional Repository Assessment Tools For In-House Reporting, Aajay Murphy, Heather Hankins
Digital Commons Southeastern User Group (DC SEUG) 2019
With the bepress repository management software comes some of the most in-depth tools for value assessment among platforms, these include automatically populated data on downloads, metadata page hits, works posted, readership distribution, and referrers. Recent integration with PlumX has allowed for even more granular opportunities for assessing the value of the repository. However, this left us at Kennesaw State University longing for some additional metrics of success. We are housed in the University Library System, where monthly and annual reports are limited to data used to satisfy accreditation needs, such as quantitative reporting on instruction, one-on-one consultations, and brief qualitative …

Connecting Knowledge Silos: Tying Together Institutional Repositories For Research Cohesion And Inclusive Information Access, 2019 Nova Southeastern University
Connecting Knowledge Silos: Tying Together Institutional Repositories For Research Cohesion And Inclusive Information Access, Bebe S. Chang, Sunghae Ress
Digital Commons Southeastern User Group (DC SEUG) 2019
Since the first free research-sharing site, arXiv, appeared in 1991, the push for open access to combat exorbitant subscription models has seen the number of institutional and research repositories jump to over 4,000. However, with each encased in its own architectural edifice, how is robust research synergy being achieved if researchers are consulting these storehouses of knowledge separately rather than as a collective?
Writing in The Atlantic in 1945, Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, Dr. Vannevar Bush, observed that the “publication has been extended far beyond our present ability to make real use of the record.” …

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group (DC SEUG) 2019
Altova MapForce is an intuitive graphical mapping tool for manipulating and converting any structured data, including OAI-PMH XML, into any scheme without specialized knowledge of XML or XSLT. With Altova MapForce, repository managers who lack dedicated XML programming or development support can streamline creation of XML stylesheets and simplify XML conversions. During this session, we will look specifically at crosswalking bepress journal metadata to Crossref Deposit and DOAJ Native XML.

Build Your Resume And Leave An Impact: Publish In The Cupola, 2019 Gettysburg College
Build Your Resume And Leave An Impact: Publish In The Cupola, Hana Huskic
Student Publications
The Cupola actively serves as a resistance to the academic publishing system that makes knowledge exclusive to the wealthy and privileged who have the ability to access it. Instead of keeping scholarship “behind the paywall” with high subscription costs, The Cupola and the other open repositories keep the knowledge freely accessible to everyone at any time, anywhere in the world. The Cupola has only existed since April 2012, but we have already reached 1 million downloads (...) To find out more about how The Cupola is perceived on the campus and how to make more students interested in student nominations, …
Purdue Graduate School Thesis And Dissertation Policy Changes: Giant Leaps Forward, 2019 Purdue University
Purdue Graduate School Thesis And Dissertation Policy Changes: Giant Leaps Forward, James L. Mohler, Ashlee Messersmith
2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Inspired by the University of Iowa’s Beyond the PDF event last year, the Purdue Graduate School evaluated their policies pertaining to theses and dissertations. The evaluation concluded last summer and found that existing policies were unclear regarding acceptable types of theses, in particular, requiring submission in the PDF format. As students continue to utilize emerging technologies and publish journal articles to supplement their research, policies were rewritten to include non-traditional formats and types of theses. The challenges, motivations, and inspirations for the new policies will be shared as well as early indications of their impacts.

2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dissertations represent different doctoral cultures as well as artifacts of research achievement. Beyond general contours identifiable as contribution to knowledge, the dissertation is as much symbol as acculturation within disciplinary cultures. Each dissertation represents training, discovery, unique contribution, as well as the acculturative properties inherent to the dissertation’s liminal process and raison d'être. This exploratory presentation challenges us to consider what the dissertation is and how it may vary in purpose and form.
