Training Paraprofessionals Via A Wiki Format To Deliver Reference Services, Emily K. Chan, Marina Torres

Emily K. Chan

To maximize staff presence and reference capabilities at HSB, reference training was implemented for the branch's two paraprofessional employees. A wiki platform was selected to collocate different resources and formats in a simple location. The collaborative functions of the wiki complemented the branch's team-oriented environment. Each staff member selected materials of interest and augmented the wiki conversation with their previous experiences.

Mining The Knowledge Base: Wiki Technology And Constructivist Learning And In A Reference Services Training Program, Emily K. Chan, Marina Torres

Emily K. Chan

In Fall 2009, University of the Pacific's Health Sciences Branch (HSB) Library initiated a reference training program to develop competencies and skills in order to promote a uniform level of reference expertise among its paraprofessional staff. Like many other branch libraries, HSB serves specialized user populations with minimal staffing. At the time of the training, the Sciences Librarian was the only provider of reference services and her presence at HSB varied, based upon her responsibilities to the Main Library, its Reference Desk and other departmental, school, and university-wide committees.

Interactive Taxonomy For Content Exploration And Discovery [Poster], Rebecca C. Reznik-Zellen, Bob Stevens

Rebecca C. Reznik-Zellen

Interactive taxonomic functionality enables visitors to explore relationships between concepts and access content within the nanomanufacturing domain. InterNano is an information portal and subject repository for nanomanufacturing hosted by the National Nanomanufacturing Network at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which combines a dynamic open source content management system (Joomla!) for managing original content with the reliable EPrints repository software system for managing archived publications, educational material, and workshop presentations. Because nanomanufacturing is a small, interdisciplinary subdomain of nanotechnology, an important component of the project is a specialized taxonomy for domain definition and information discovery. The InterNano Taxonomy is a unique ...

Postmodernism, Processing, And The Profession: Towards A Theoretical Reading Of Minimal Standards, Melanie Griffin 2009 University of South Florida

Postmodernism, Processing, And The Profession: Towards A Theoretical Reading Of Minimal Standards, Melanie Griffin

Melanie Griffin

While the ramifications of minimal standards processing for practice are well-documented, the theoretical questions which Greene and Meissner's 2005 article "More Product, Less Process" raises are not. This article seeks to address the broader ideological and theoretical questions involved in recent minimal standards processing recommendations through analysis of Greene and Meissner’s original article and the immediate responses and case studies which it generated, in order to relate this body of literature to theory-driven notions of archival administration.4 By identifying theoretical issues in writings on MPLP rather than focusing on practice alone, it is possible to move beyond ...

The Impact Of Web-Scale Discovery On The Use Of A Library Collection, Doug Way 2009 Grand Valley State University

The Impact Of Web-Scale Discovery On The Use Of A Library Collection, Doug Way

Doug Way

Grand Valley State University Libraries implemented Serials Solutions’ web-scale discovery tool, Summon, during the fall of 2009. This case study explores whether Summon had an impact on the use of the library’s resources during its first semester of implementation. An examination of usage statistics showed a dramatic decrease in the use of traditional abstracting and indexing databases and an equally dramatic increase in the use of full text resources from full text database and online journal collections. The author concludes that the increase in full text use is linked to the implementation of a web-scale discovery tool.

Public Libraries In The Lives Of Young Readers: Past, Present And Future, Paulette Rothbauer, Virginia A. Walter, Kathleen Weibel

Paulette Rothbauer

Youth services in public libraries have always been characterized by good intentions and commitment to patrons' personal choice: to select, to question, and to know. The public library has changed and grown since its Progressive Era beginnings, and the leadership for much of this change has come from youth services librarians through their work on behalf of young library users, whether this involves summer programming or digital media development. This chapter's three scholars bring a wealth of public library experience to this endeavour, as they describe the past, present, and future of public library service to young people in ...
