Crossing Disciplines, Creating Space: Using Drop-In Research Labs To Support An Interdisciplinary Research-Intensive Capstone Course, Jill E. Anderson, Jason Puckett

University Library Faculty Publications

Research labs — scheduled group consultations — can be an effective means to provide focused library assistance to a high-needs class. Confronted with students from a single journalism history course suffering from library anxiety and requesting individual and intensive help from librarians, the authors developed over several semesters a set of best practices for conducting research labs. They found that holding one to two scheduled group consultations in the library during class time has helped librarians bring the amount of time spent on this one class down to a more reasonable segment of their overall workload, while also allowing them …

Holocaust Denial Literature Twenty Years Later: A Follow-Up Investigation Of Public Librarians' Attitudes Regarding Acquisition And Access, John A. Drobnicki

Publications and Research

This study was undertaken to learn about public librarians' attitudes and opinions concerning the sometimes conflicting issues of intellectual freedom, collection balance, and controversial materials, and whether those attitudes and opinions have changed over twenty years. The investigation focused on Holocaust denial literature, a body of work which ranges from minimizing the Holocaust to outright denying that it happened. Public librarians in Nassau County, New York, were surveyed, and the results were compared with a similar survey from 1992. The results indicate that librarians are even more open to Holocaust denial literature than they were twenty years ago and, regardless …

Google Vs. The Library (Part Ii): Student Search Patterns And Behaviors When Using Google And A Federated Search Tool, Helen Georgas

Publications and Research

This study examines the information-seeking behavior of undergraduate students within a research context. Student searches were recorded while the participants used Google and a library (federated) search tool to find sources (one book, two articles, and one other source of their choosing) for a selected topic. The undergraduates in this study believed themselves to be skilled researchers, but their search queries and behaviors did not support this belief. Students did not examine their topics to identify keywords and related terms. They relied heavily on the language presented to them via the list of research topics and performed natural language or …

Student Scholarship In Institutional Repositories, Elizabeth Hertenstein 2014 Bowling Green State University

Student Scholarship In Institutional Repositories, Elizabeth Hertenstein

University Libraries Faculty Publications

INTRODUCTION Research on institutional repositories (IR) has primarily focused on issues related to faculty scholarship. Thus far, little has been written on issues related to student scholarship. This lack is problematic for planners developing or extending their IR content who may be considering adding student scholarship. METHODS A 23-question survey of library professionals was conducted to explore size of institution, existence of an IR, IR software packages utilized, individuals involved in system management, levels of support for inclusion of student work in IRs, types of student work included, and workflow submission policies. RESULTS The findings present an environmental scan of …
