Noir Affect [Table Of Contents], Christopher Breu, Elizabeth A. Hatmaker 2020 Fordham University

Noir Affect [Table Of Contents], Christopher Breu, Elizabeth A. Hatmaker

Literature

Noir Affect proposes a new understanding of noir as defined by negative affect. This new understanding emphasizes that noir is, first and foremost, an affective disposition rather than a specific cycle of films or novels associated with a given time period (the mid-twentieth century) or national tradition (the U.S.). Instead the essays in Noir Affect trace noir’s negativity as it manifests in different national contexts (from the U.S. to Mexico, France and Japan) manifests in a range of different media (films, novels, video games, and manga). The forms of affect associated with noir are resolutely negative: these ...

Trying To Save The Game(R): Understanding The Meaning-Making Process Of Youtube Subscribers Surrounding Mental Health And Video Game Vlogging, Maria Mickles

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Through technological innovation and the rise of digital media platforms, many young adults are afforded the opportunity to spend their lives on the Internet. Not only is a large amount of time spent on the Internet by most people, but young adults are making media sharing-platforms, specifically YouTube, part of their daily lives (Westenberg, 2016, p. 8). YouTube allows content creators to produce videos that not only attract audiences of different ages and geographic location, but, too, create an intimate bond between creator and subscriber, allowing each party to communicate and engage in content related activities through the comments section ...

America's Last Great Newspaper War [Table Of Contents], Mike Jaccarino 2020 Fordham University

America's Last Great Newspaper War [Table Of Contents], Mike Jaccarino

Media Studies

A from-the-trenches view of New York Daily News and New York Post runners and photographers who would stop at nothing to break the story and squash their tabloid arch rivals.

When author Mike Jaccarino was offered a job at the Daily News in 2006, he was asked a single question: “Kid, what are you going to do to help us beat the Post?” That was the year things went sideways at the News, when The New York Post surpassed its nemesis in circulation for the first time in the history of both papers. Tasked with one job—crush the Post ...

Expanded Cinema: Fiftieth Anniversary Edition [ Table Of Contents], Gene Youngblood 2020 Fordham University

Expanded Cinema: Fiftieth Anniversary Edition [ Table Of Contents], Gene Youngblood

Media Studies

Fiftieth anniversary reissue of the founding media studies book that helped establish media art as a cultural category.

First published in 1970, Gene Youngblood’s influential Expanded Cinema was the first serious treatment of video, computers, and holography as cinematic tools. Long considered the Bible for media artists, Youngblood’s insider account of 1960s counterculture and the birth of cybernetics remains a mainstay reference in today’s hypermediated digital world. This fiftieth-anniversary edition includes a new Introduction by the author that offers conceptual tools for understanding the sociocultural and sociopolitical realities of our present world.

A unique eyewitness account of ...

The Impact Of New Media Influencers: A Video, Curtis Richardson 2020 The University of Akron

The Impact Of New Media Influencers: A Video, Curtis Richardson

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In this project, I wanted to conduct an educational and entertaining essay translated into a video format. This “Video Essay” would cover how “New Media stars” (including people on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, but specifically Youtube or any other form of video content online) have affected and influenced demographics and culture. Specifically, I wanted to study how strong the reach of a social media star is, the effect of this reach on the consumer, and how it influenced opinions, thoughts, and habits. After research, it turns out the social media influencers are very important for their online environment. They help ...

The Work Of An Hour, Michael F. Russo Etc.

Faculty Publications

This research asks two basic questions: 1) To what extent was the Bush administration’s pro-war propaganda repeated, amplified, and ultimately reported as fact by main stream news agencies? and 2) Is there any correlation between the repetition of the propaganda and popular support for the invasion of Iraq? In other words, can we say news reports helped “sell” the war?

The White Supremacy Aesthetic: A Racial Capitalist Intervention On Instagram, Jordyn Sheldon

Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Social media is a ubiquitous aspect of the modern world. The globalization of communication has transformed the ways in which we interact as human beings. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that this technology is not neutral ground. Social media are platforms upon which relationships of power are negotiated. They also exist within structures of power. Where Twitter engages users in writing short texts and Facebook allows users to post or share almost anything, Instagram, owned by Facebook, is the social media platform which focuses primarily on images, photographs and other visuals. This format has powerful implications when one considers ...

Modern Intolerance And The Medieval Crusades [Excerpted From Whose Middle Ages?], Nicholas L. Paul 2019 Fordham University

Modern Intolerance And The Medieval Crusades [Excerpted From Whose Middle Ages?], Nicholas L. Paul

History

Whose Middle Ages? is an interdisciplinary collection of short, accessible essays intended for the non-specialist reader and ideal for teaching at an undergraduate level. Each of twenty-two essays takes up an area where humans have dug for meaning into the medieval past and brought something distorted back into the present: in our popular entertainment; in our news, our politics, and our propaganda; and in subtler ways that inform how we think about our histories, our countries, and ourselves. Each author teases out the stakes of a history that has refused to remain past and uses the tools of the academy ...

The Value Of International Experiences For Business Students: Measuring Business Student Attitudes Toward Study Abroad, Sean Heffron, Peter A. Maresco 2019 Sacred Heart University

The Value Of International Experiences For Business Students: Measuring Business Student Attitudes Toward Study Abroad, Sean Heffron, Peter A. Maresco

Sean Heffron

The value of an international experience—especially for students of business—continues to be an area of focus at colleges and universities. Students across all disciplines within the business curriculum: accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, or sport management are expected by employers to possess knowledge of, and appreciation for, other cultures. Using as a backdrop two unique study abroad programs that immerse students into an intercultural business experience and have them interacting with—and learning from—the local residents as well, the survey research in this study measures student attitudes before and after they study abroad and it notes the ...

Toward A Performative Understanding Of Politeness, Charles Kyle Rudick, Danielle E. Mcgeough

Danielle E. McGeough

In this article, we argue that critical communication scholars have largely overlooked the study of politeness as a constitutive component of identity, culture, and power. We offer a critical-performative framework for critical scholars interested in studying politeness as a political, discursive, and embodied act. To develop this agenda, we first outline Brown and Levinson’s postpositivist theory of politeness. We then review three challenges to their use of intentionality, Grice’s cooperative principle, and Goffman’s concept of face. These challenges are located in interactional, traditional critical, and discursive understandings of politeness (respectively). Next, we show how a performative understanding ...
