Vistas In Common: Sharing Stories About Heritage Landscapes, Angela Labrador 2010 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Vistas In Common: Sharing Stories About Heritage Landscapes, Angela Labrador

Angela M Labrador

Rural communities in the United States have faced mounting pressure to develop their local economies in ways that threaten their historic agrarian landscapes and cultural practices. However, these communities are often wary of, if not hostile to, top–down approaches to historic preservation and landscape conservation. Community-engaged heritage protection strategies shift the focus from managing cultural and natural heritage as discrete resources to envisioning heritage and its protection as a form of community development. This paper presents a case study from rural New England in which the intergenerational sharing of narratives about heritage landscapes moves beyond simply commemorating the past, to …

A Conceptual Model Of Academic Success For Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison 2010 University of Central Florida

A Conceptual Model Of Academic Success For Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Concern over the academic talent development of Division I student–athletes has led to increased research to explain variations in their academic performance. Although a substantial amount of attention has been given to the relationship between student–athletes and their levels of academic success, there remain critical theoretical and analytical gaps. The purpose of this article is to develop a conceptual model to understand and explain the cumulative processes and characteristics—as a whole and in stages—that influence academic success for Division I student–athletes. Research on student–athletes and academic success is reviewed and synthesized to provide a rationale for the basic elements of …

Belly Dancing Mommas: Challenging Cultural Discourses Of Maternity, Angela M. Moe 2010 Western Michigan University

Belly Dancing Mommas: Challenging Cultural Discourses Of Maternity, Angela M. Moe

Angela M. Moe

I’m waiting backstage. The last minute checks… Shoes? I can’t bend down far enough to reach them. Hip scarf? I can’t reach across far enough across myself to adjust it. Veil? If I turn around to ensure it’s draped correctly, I’ll bump into and move the stage curtains. Warm up hip shimmy? No need. I’m always warm nowadays. My time is close, in more ways than one. The music, and the flutter in my belly, serve as reminders… I’m 26 weeks along and I’m still dancing. I’m proud of myself. I enter the stage feeling voluptuous and ripe...what as odd …

Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, carroy u. ferguson 2010 UMASS Boston

Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

Every day we, as human beings, maneuver through a myriad of circumstances in our individual and collective life spaces. Central to our experiences is the nature, kind, and quality of our relationships. When we encounter differences (racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, economic, sexual orientation, the mentally and physically challenged), a common issue that often emerges in our experiences is the extent to which we use tolerance in relating to other people and circumstances. For this reason, I want to discuss the nature of tolerance and its limitations, and how to move beyond tolerance by consciously using Universal Energy Laws, discernment, and …

Ending The Clash Of Science, Religion, And Human Survival: A Model For Reintegrating Reason, Intuition, And Reality, Cari Bourette 2010 Western Kentucky University

Ending The Clash Of Science, Religion, And Human Survival: A Model For Reintegrating Reason, Intuition, And Reality, Cari Bourette

Cari Bourette

While there is occasional interest in the reconciliation of science and religion, a system for incorporating both rational and intuitive information in making sense of the world and making informed decisions using the integration of this knowledge is generally unavailable in the modern world. Many religions throughout the world record a long ago period of “oneness” with the divine, with nature, with the universe, which is tragically interrupted by estrangement or separation. By delving into what may seem to be a foreign venue to discover “Reality” for a member of modern Western society, what may be discovered are remnants of …

Narratives Of Diversity In The Corporate Boardroom: What Corporate Insiders Say About Why Diversity Matters, John M. Conley, Lissa Lamkin Broome, Kimberly D. Krawiec 2010 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Narratives Of Diversity In The Corporate Boardroom: What Corporate Insiders Say About Why Diversity Matters, John M. Conley, Lissa Lamkin Broome, Kimberly D. Krawiec

Kimberly D. Krawiec

Over the last generation, the concept of diversity has become commonplace and taken-for-granted in discourses ranging from law to education to business. In higher education, for example, it is hard to imagine a faculty job search or a student admissions discussion that was not heavily laden with talk of diversity, in the sense of the representative inclusion of women and racial and ethnic minorities in a group or organization. In this paper we present the results of an interview-based study of the discourse of diversity in a particular business setting: the corporate boardroom. Our principal observation is that—thirty-one years after …
