In this paper, we used a coarse-grained model at the residue level to calculate the binding free energies of three protein-protein complexes. General formulations to calculate the electrostatic binding free energy and the van der Waals free energy are presented by solving linearized Poisson–Boltzmann equations using the boundary element method in combination with the fast multipole method. The residue level model with the fast multipole method allows us to efficiently investigate how the mutations on the active site of the protein-protein interface affect the changes in binding affinities of protein complexes. A polyanionic unit {Au12Sn9} with a novel “corrugated sheet” shape occurs in K23Au12Sn9. The compound was obtained by fusion of the pure elements in tantalum ampules at high temperatures followed by programmed cooling, and the structure was determined by X-ray diffraction: I4̅2m (No. 121), a = 20.834(3), c = 6.818(1) Å, Z = 2. The interrelation between the specific crystallographic positions and their influence on the magnetism of neighboring atoms is examined from first principles electronic structure calculations using the Gd5Ge4 compound as a model system. The predicted preferences of the specific occupations by nonmagnetic yttrium atoms and the resulting magnetism of substituted Gd5Ge4 have been confirmed, respectively, by single crystal x-ray diffraction and magnetization experiments.

A crystallographic study and theoretical analysis of the Si/Ga site preferences in the Gd5GaxSi4−x series is presented. Gd5GaxSi4−x adopt the orthorhombic Gd5Si4-type structure (space group Pnma, Z = 4) with a maximum Ga content near x = 1.00, as determined by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. When the complexity of a metallic compound reaches a certain level, a specific location in the structure may be critically responsible for a given fundamental property of a material while other locations may not play as much of a role in determining such a property. The first-principles theory has pinpointed a critical location in the framework of a complex intermetallic compound—Gd5Ge4—that resulted in a controlled alteration of the magnetism of this compound using precise chemical tools.

A series of rhombohedrally distorted γ-brass structures containing a mixture of magnetically active 3d elements, Cr and Fe, Cr1−xFexGa, is investigated crystallographically. These structures consist of chains of trans-face-sharing Ga-centered transition metal icosahedra. Neutron powder diffraction specifically on Cr0.5Fe0.5Ga, which could be prepared as a single phase material, gave lattice constants (11 K) a = 12.5172(2) Å and c = 7.8325(2) Å and a refined composition of Cr0.502(6)Fe0.498Ga = Cr6.523Fe6.477Ga13 and revealed partial ordering ...

American cities are increasingly suffering from property abandonment and dereliction. In this paper, we identify urban dereliction as an important and underexamined phenomenon in American cities, and one that warrants attention under the conceptual umbrella of environmental justice. An environmental justice approach that emphasizes both distributional and procedural justice provides an important lens through which to examine abandonment and dereliction. We provide an empirical example of dereliction in Atlanta neighborhoods and report preliminary findings from a study of the distribution of urban neglect and the presence (or absence) of resident activism in both high- and low-dereliction areas. Second-order Møller−Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) is used to perform geometry optimizations on XHX−·(H2O)n for X = Br, I, with n = 1 to 6 water molecules. Of particular interest is the manner in which the solvent molecules orient themselves around the solute and which configurations are lowest in energy. Although for most values of n, water molecules may donate all of their hydrogen atoms for hydrogen bonding to the solute, this type of structure is the lowest in energy only for n = 0 to 2 and is only a local minimum for n = 3, 4, and 6. Growth of Ag thin films on the twofold surface of a decagonal Al-Cu-Co quasicrystal is characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy, at different temperatures, and for coverages ranging from submonolayer to 11 monolayers. From prior work, three types of clean surface terraces are known to exist. It is well known that conversion of Si(111)-(7×7) into the (√3×√3)R30° phase of adsorbed Ag requires a change in the Si density, and causes formation of islands and holes at the surface. By mass balance, the ratio of areas of islands and holes (RIH) should be approximately 1. However, we find that the ratio is significantly higher, depending on preparation conditions. A possible explanation would be that there are different types of (√3×√3)R30° structures. We have observed the configuration and motion of surface steps on the aperiodic icosahedral (i-) Al-Pd-Mn quasicrystal using low-energy electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. As the quasicrystal is cooled from high temperature, bulk vacancies migrate to the surface causing the surface to be etched. Surprisingly, this etching occurs by two types of steps with different heights moving in different directions with different velocities. The steady-state surface morphology is a uniformly spaced rhomboidal step network. This network requires that the layer stacking near the surface deviates from the bulk quasicrystal stacking.

Progenitor scenarios for short gamma-ray bursts (short GRBs) include coalescenses of two neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, which would necessarily be accompanied by the emission of strong gravitational waves. We present a search for these known gravitational-wave signatures in temporal and directional coincidence with 22 GRBs that had sufficient gravitational-wave data available in multiple instruments during LIGO's fifth science run, S5, and Virgo's first science run, VSR1. Land Cover Land Use (LCLU) change affects Earth surface properties including albedo that impose a radiative forcing on the climate. Recent spatially explicit satellite derived contemporary LCLU, albedo, and projected LCLU data are used to study the impact of LCLU change from 1973 to 2000, and from 2000 to 2050, on albedo and surface radiative forcing for the conterminous United States. We have derived an X-ray luminosity function using parallax-based distance measurements of a set of 12 dwarf novae, consisting of Suzaku, XMM-Newton and ASCA observations. The shape of the X-ray luminosity function obtained is the most accurate to date, and the luminosities of our sample are concentrated between ~10^{30}-10^{31} erg s^{-1}, lower than previous measurements of X-ray luminosity functions of dwarf novae. Based on the integrated X-ray luminosity function, the sample becomes more incomplete below ~3 x 10^{30} erg s^{-1} than it is above this luminosity limit, and the sample is dominated by X-ray ...

Determining whether a client station should trust an access point is a known problem in wireless security. Traditional approaches to solving this problem resort to cryptography. But cryptographic exchange protocols are complex and therefore induce potential vulnerabilities in themselves. We show that measurement of clock skews of access points in an 802.11 network can be useful in this regard, since it provides fingerprints of the devices. The oldest known spatially-explicit archaeological excavation, conducted in Brixham cave, Devon, in 1858, is reconstructed using geographic information systems technology. Two dimensional plots of individual fossil taxa and flint artefacts demonstrate the utility of the technique for elucidating taphonomy and palaeobiology. The cave served as a den for hibernating brown bears, as a den for hyena and cave lion, and as a reliquary for their prey.
