Transitioning Into Contemporary Theory: Critical Postmodern Theory In Mathematics Education Research, David W. Stinson, Erika Bullock
Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Faculty Publications
In this theoretical paper, the authors provide an overview of mathematics education as a research domain, identifying and briefly discussing four transitions or historical moments in mathematics education research. Using the Instructional Triangle as a point of reference for the dynamics of mathematics instruction, they illustrate how mathematics education researchers working in different moments explore different questions and use different theoretical perspectives. The authors then provide brief summaries of critical theory and postmodern theory, and suggest critical postmodern theory (CPT) as a hybrid theory that offers new possibilities for conceptualizing and conducting mathematics education research.

Methodology And Application Of Adaptive And Sequential Approaches, 2012 Georgia State University
Methodology And Application Of Adaptive And Sequential Approaches, Zhengjia Chen, Yichuan Zhao, Ye Cui, Jeanne Kowalski
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
The clinical trial, a prospective study to evaluate the effect of interventions in humans under prespecified conditions, is a standard and integral part of modern medicine. Many adaptive and sequential approaches have been proposed for use in clinical trials to allow adaptations or modifications to aspects of a trial after its initiation without undermining the validity and integrity of the trial. The application of adaptive and sequential methods in clinical trials has significantly improved the flexibility, efficiency, therapeutic effect, and validity of trials. To further advance the performance of clinical trials and convey the progress of research on adaptive and …

A Reciprocity Relation For Wp-Bailey Pairs, 2012 West Chester University of Pennsylvania
A Reciprocity Relation For Wp-Bailey Pairs, James Mclaughlin, Peter Zimmer
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We derive a new general transformation for WP-Bailey pairs by considering the a certain limiting case of a WP-Bailey chain previously found by the authors, and examine several consequences of this new transformation. These consequences include new summation formulae involving WP-Bailey pairs. Other consequences include new proofs of some classical identities due to Jacobi, Ramanujan and others, and indeed extend these identities to identities involving particular specializations of arbitrary WP-Bailey pairs.

A Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher-Type Formula For (R,S)-Regular Partitions, James Mclaughlin, Scott Parsell
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Let pr,s(n) denote the number of partitions of a positive integer n into parts containing no multiples of r or s, where r > 1 and s > 1 are square-free, relatively prime integers. We use classical methods to derive a Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher-type infinite series for pr,s(n).

Background
We previously reported that the cytochrome P450 product 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid has prosurvival effects in pulmonary artery endothelial cells and ex vivo pulmonary arteries. We tested the potential of a 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid analog N-[20-hydroxyeicosa-5(Z),14(Z)-dienoyl]glycine (20-5,14-HEDGE) to protect against lung ischemic reperfusion injury in rats. Furthermore, we examined activation of innate immune system components, high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), in this model as well as the effect of 20-5,14-HEDGE on this signaling pathway.
Methods
Sprague-Dawley rats treated with 20-5,14-HEDGE or vehicle were subjected to surgically induced, unilateral lung ischemia for 60 minutes followed by reperfusion …

Overfishing Of The Common Snook, 2012 University of South Florida
Overfishing Of The Common Snook, Allison Ashcroft
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The chief aim of this project is to determine if the populations of the common snook, Centropomus Undecimalis, in the Atlantic and Gulf coast are being affected by overfishing. This is established by evaluating the intrinsic rate of change for these populations and their carrying capacities. It turns out that the carrying capacity for the population of the Atlantic coast is approximately one million snook and its intrinsic rate is 0.00621, while the carrying capacity of the Gulf coast's population is 2.9 million snook and its intrinsic rate is 0.00165. The decline of both populations is most likely due …
The Elevation To Area Relationship Of Lake Behnke, 2012 University of South Florida
The Elevation To Area Relationship Of Lake Behnke, Kaitlin Deutsch
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The objective of this project was to determine the area-to-depth relationship in Lake Behnke, which acts as the principal stormwater drainage basin for the University of South Florida campus in Tampa, Florida. Data previously collected in a stormwater management study by Jeffery Earhart illustrated a linear correlation between the lake's area and depth; however, that study was conducted in 1998, and this present work serves to double check that correlation. We analyzed a bathymetric map of Lake Behnke that displayed several contour lines indicating depth and approximated the area inside each closed curve with a contour integral. The resulting relationship …

A Note On Horner's Method, Tian-Xiao He, P. J.-S. Shiue
Scholarship
Here we present an application of Horner's method in evaluating the sequence of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Based on the method, we also give an e_cient way to calculate the diference sequence and divided diference sequence of a polynomial, which can be applied in the Newton interpolation. Finally, we survey all of the results in Proposition 1.4.

Eulerian Polynomials And B-Splines, Tian-Xiao He
Scholarship
Here presented is the interrelationship between Eulerian polynomials, Eulerian fractions and Euler-Frobenius polynomials, Euler-Frobenius fractions, B-splines, respectively. The properties of Eulerian polynomials and Eulerian fractions and their applications in B-spline interpolation and evaluation of Riemann-zeta function values at odd integers are given. The relation between Eulerian numbers and B-spline values at knot points are also discussed.

From Conic Intersections To Toric Intersections: The Case Of The Isoptic Curves Of An Ellipse, Thierry Dana-Picard, Nurit Zehavi, Giora Mann
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Starting from the study of the orthoptic curves of parabolas and ellipses, we generalize to the case of isoptic curves for any angle, i.e. the geometric locus of points from which a parabola or an ellipse are viewed under a given angle. This leads to the investigation of spiric curves and to the construction of these curves as an actual intersection of a self-intersecting torus with a plane. The usage of a Computer Algebra System facilitated this investigation.
Student Enrolment In Classes With Frequent Mathematical Discussion And Its Longitudinal Effect On Mathematics Achievement, 2012 University of Montana
Student Enrolment In Classes With Frequent Mathematical Discussion And Its Longitudinal Effect On Mathematics Achievement, Karl W. Kosko
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Mathematical discussion has been identified as being beneficial to students’ understandings of mathematics (Goos, 1995; Lee, 2006). Students in classrooms with more effective math discussion have been observed to engage more frequently in discussion (e.g. Hiebert & Wearne, 1993), but the converse is not necessarily true (e.g. Manouchehri & St. John, 2006). Utilizing hierarchical linear modeling, the present study examined student enrollment in classes with more and less frequent discussion and such enrollment’s effect on mathematics achievement over time. Results indicated that students enrolled in classes that discuss math “almost every day” consistently have higher math achievement than students enrolled …

Two of the great ancient civilizations were those of the Greeks and the Chinese. Many great works of art, architecture, philosophy and literature have been produced by both of these civilizations. When it comes to mathematics in the Western World, the Greeks have also been credited with many contributions to the field, especially geometry. Anyone who has completed a standard high school mathematical curriculum has been introduced to the names of Pythagoras, Euclid and Archimedes and their methods. Not as widely credited in the Western world are the mathematical contributions of the ancient Chinese civilization. An examination into Chinese mathematics …

Translating And Adapting The Mathematical Knowledge For Teaching (Mkt) Measures: The Cases Of Indonesia And Norway, Dicky Ng, Reidar Mosvold, Janne Fauskanger
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This paper examines issues of translating and adapting an instrument that aims at measuring mathematical knowledge for teaching in Indonesia and Norway. The instrument was created for use in the U.S., and we discuss problematic and challenging issues of translation and adaptation. Two items from the released items pool were translated using a common framework modified from a previous study to exemplify critical issues that need to be resolved prior to using such instrument in another country. Themes identified in this study include a) minor challenges due to cultural differences; b) the use of technical language in schools; c) incommensurable …

This thesis will show work on Orthogonal Polynomials. In mathematics, the type of polynomials that are orthogonal to each other under inner product are called orthogonal polynomials. Jacobi polynomials, Laguerre polynomials, and Hermite polynomials are examples of classical orthogonal polynomials that was invented in the nineteenth century. The theory of rational approximations is one of the most important applications of orthogonal polynomials.
