Ecohydrological Changes In Interdunal Wetlands/ Slacks As A Response To Rising Lake Levels In An Evolving Eolian Landscape Along Lake Michigan’S Eastern Coast, Katherine Kay, Rene Aerts

We are conducting ecohydrological studies in mature and incipient interdunal wetlands/slacks in a coastal dune complex on Lake Michigan’s eastern coast. The slacks are located in the Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area, ~200m inland of Lake Michigan within a large parabolic dune (main slack) and smaller blowouts on its arms (incipient slacks). Rising Lake Michigan water levels have increased groundwater levels, monitored at twelve locations, >1m, rewetting the main slack from its previous dry state, expanding its extent, and deepening pools. Using Remote Sensing To Monitor Ecohydrological Changes In Great Lakes Interdunal Wetlands/Slacks, Rene Aerts, Katherine Kay

Interdunal wetlands/slacks develop in the Great Lakes coastal dunes when the wind scours the sand to the water table within a dune. Our previous review of historic aerial photograph/satellite imagery of Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore shows slacks expand in times of higher water levels and contract, sometimes disappearing, with lower water levels, suggesting a link between the slacks’ water tables and those of Lake Michigan-Huron (MH). Ocean circulation plays a critical role in the Earth’s climate system through the storage and transfer of heat and carbon dioxide. The North Atlantic and Southern Ocean are of particular interest because these are regions where deep-water components of global circulation develop. Dr. Romans uses the deep-sea sedimentary record to reconstruct past ocean circulation and its relationship to past climatic and tectonic conditions. The ANEMI model is an integrated assessment model of global change that emphasizes the role of water resources. The model is based on the principles of system dynamics simulation in order to analyze changes in the Earth system using feedback processes. The West Lake Pontchartrain region faces a number of long-term environmental challenges due to anthropogenic climate disturbance and landscape modification, including sea level rise, increased storm surge risk, shoreline erosion, and wetland degradation. In response, this thesis applies recent research in the fields of landscape architecture and civil engineering to propose a dynamic, natural-systems solution for wetland creation and shoreline protection. This study is focused on the population of federally-endangered American burying beetles in south-central Nebraska. It is focused on changes in land cover over time and at several levels of spatial scale, and how management efforts are impacting both the beetle and a changing landscape. Our findings are applicable to a large portion of the Great Plains, which is undergoing the same shift from grassland to woodland, and to areas where the beetle is still found.

The purpose of the present study is to explore the associations between novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID- 19) case counts and meteorological factors in 30 provincial capital cities of China. We compiled a daily dataset including confirmed case counts, ambient temperature (AT), diurnal temperature range (DTR), absolute humidity (AH) and migration scale index (MSI) for each city during the period of January 20th to March 2nd, 2020. First, we explored the associations between COVID-19 confirmed case counts, meteorological factors, and MSI using non-linear regression. An Ecopath With Ecosim Analysis On Offshore Petroleum Platform Influences On Gulf Of Mexico Red Snapper, Valentin Gomez

Offshore oil and gas platforms have had a significant presence in the Gulf of Mexico since the 1950s. An important secondary function of these structures is that they provide artificial habitat to fisheries, most notably Red snapper. Policy changes intended to reduce the risk associated with aging infrastructure have reduced the number of standing platforms from 4044 to 1867 from 2001 to 2018. The effect this loss of habitat has on Red snapper was tested by creating three scenarios of platform changes and modeling the perturbation from 2005 to 2050.
