Deformation At Uturuncu Volcano, Bolivia: Modeling The Effect Of Volatile Movement In The Hydrothermal System, 2023 University of New Mexico
Deformation At Uturuncu Volcano, Bolivia: Modeling The Effect Of Volatile Movement In The Hydrothermal System, Karissa Rosenberger
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Deformation at volcanos is often a precursor to an eruption, but sometimes volcanos experience uplift without actually erupting. Determining the mechanisms behind this deformation and whether it will lead to an eruption is an important part of understanding volcanic systems. Uturuncu volcano in Bolivia has been experiencing deformation for decades, but the last time it erupted was 250,000 years ago. The reason behind this deformation is unknown, but one possible cause is volatiles moving into the hydrothermal system and getting trapped, causing the volume to increase and the surface to uplift. To test this hypothesis, the current volume change of …
Modeling The Impacts Of Sea Level Rise In Coastal Virginia At Multiple Scales, 2023 Old Dominion University
Modeling The Impacts Of Sea Level Rise In Coastal Virginia At Multiple Scales, George Murray Mcleod Iv
OES Theses and Dissertations
Relative sea level is increasing along the Mid-Atlantic coast of the United States and the rate of relative sea level rise (ΔRSL) for Coastal Virginia is approximately double the rate of global sea level rise (ΔSLRG)(1). The potential impacts posed to communities by ΔRSL are best understood by examining the spatial relationship between the upper limits of ocean-connected waters and the geographic positioning of critical natural and societal assets. This research examines this problem at three spatial scales to quantify the impacts of ΔRSL and storm flooding events on (i) structural and transportation infrastructure for the tide-influenced coastal zone of …
Evaluating Bulk Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Compositions Of Acidic Hydrothermal Sediments On Earth– Implications For Mars Astrobiology, 2023 University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Evaluating Bulk Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Compositions Of Acidic Hydrothermal Sediments On Earth– Implications For Mars Astrobiology, Chance Sturrup
Masters Theses
Carbon isotopes have been widely used as unique biosignatures because biologic processes commonly result in distinctive negative delta 13C values (-35 to -10 ‰) within organic material on Earth. However, the bulk delta 13C analysis in Gale crater sediments on Mars revealed a wider range of values, from -25 to +56 ‰ (Franz et al., 2020), which suggests a more complex origin. To determine if bulk isotope analysis can be successfully used to detect a microbial signature in a martian analog environment, we analyzed concentrations and isotope compositions of C within hydrothermal sediments in Iceland (Námafjall, Krýsuvík, Hveragerdi) …

Impact Of Cover Crop Species Diversity On Soil Nutrient Availability And Crop Productivity, Amanda Kramer
Masters Theses
Cover crops provide multiple environmental benefits that improve both soil and water quality; however, farmers only utilize them on approximately 5% of harvested U.S. cropland. Low adoption rates are attributed to yield impact concerns, seed and planting costs, and lack of advocacy. This study, which began in October 2019, assessed the effects of nitrogen rate and cover crop diversity on weed biomass, soil coverage, in-situ residue decomposition, soil nitrogen and phosphorus availability, and cash crop yield to better understand the costs and benefits of cover crop adoption at two locations in Tennessee (Milan and Spring Hill). Treatments were replicated 4 …

Visco-Elastic Full-Waveform Inversion Based On Multi-Objective Function, Liang Xu, Ma Yue, Liu Chao, Chen Zhen, Jia Dongdong, Li Zhiyong, Pan Wenyong
Coal Geology & Exploration
Full-waveform inversion (FWI) is one of the core technologies developed in exploration geophysics. Through FWI, the subsurface velocity structures can be constructed and the attenuation parameter (the quality factor Q) model can be inverted, which is helpful to characterize the types and structures of subsurface media (such as the fluid and collapse column in collapse column). This is significant for the exploration and development of natural resources such as coal, oil and gas. Parameter crosstalk is the key difficulty of visco-elastic FWI. Due to the influences of velocity errors, the inverted Q models contain very strong crosstalk noise. To …
