Improving Annual Fixed Wing Maintenance Cost Estimates Through Cost Estimating Relationships, Kirsten Bunecke 2018 Air Force Institute of Technology

Improving Annual Fixed Wing Maintenance Cost Estimates Through Cost Estimating Relationships, Kirsten Bunecke

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force executes its mission primarily through the use of fixed-wing aircrafts. Maintaining these aircrafts represents approximately one-third of annual Operating and Support costs; which in turn, make up the majority of Life Cycle Costs. The current approach to estimating aircraft maintenance costs does not take into consideration programmatic data available in the Air Force Total Ownership Cost (AFTOC) database. The four maintenance cost subcategories researched in this thesis are Consumable Materials and Repair Parts, Depot Level Repairables (DLRs), Depot Maintenance, and Contractor Logistic Support. Each of these cost categories must first be standardized to be able to compare …

Real Solution Of Dae And Pdae System, Zahra Mohammadi, Greg Reid

Western Research Forum

General systems of differential equations don't have restrictions on the number or type of equations. For example, they can be over or under-determined, and also contain algebraic constraints (e.g. algebraic equations such as in Differential-Algebraic equations (DAE) and Partial differential algebraic equations (PDAE). Increasingly such general systems arise from mathematical modeling of engineering and science problems such as in multibody mechanics, electrical circuit design, optimal control, chemical kinetics and chemical control systems. In most applications, only real solutions are of interest, rather than complex-valued solutions. Much progress has been made in exact differential elimination methods, which enable characterization of all …

Numerical Simulation Of Energy Localization In Dynamic Materials, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski 2018 Tallinn University of Technology

Numerical Simulation Of Energy Localization In Dynamic Materials, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski

Publications

Dynamic materials are artificially constructed in such a way that they may vary their characteristic properties in space or in time, or both, by an appropriate arrangement or control. These controlled changes in time can be provided by the application of an external (non-mechanical) field, or through a phase transition. In principle, all materials change their properties with time, but very slowly and smoothly. Changes in properties of dynamic materials should be realized in a short or quasi-nil time lapse and over a sufficiently large material region. Wave propagation is a characteristic feature for dynamic materials because it is also …

Indicators For Early Assessment Of Palliative Care In Lung Cancer Patients: A Population Study Using Linked Health Data, Maria Kelly, Katie M. O'Brien, Michael Lucey, Kerri Clough-Gorr, Ailish Hannigan 2018 National Cancer Registry Ireland and Graduate Entry Medical School, University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland

Indicators For Early Assessment Of Palliative Care In Lung Cancer Patients: A Population Study Using Linked Health Data, Maria Kelly, Katie M. O'Brien, Michael Lucey, Kerri Clough-Gorr, Ailish Hannigan

Department of Mathematics Publications

Analysing linked, routinely collected data may be useful to identify characteristics of patients with suspected lung cancer who could benefit from early assessment for palliative care. The aim of this study was to compare characteristics of newly diagnosed lung cancer patients dying within 30 days of diagnosis (short term survivors) with those surviving more than 30 days. To identify indicators for early palliative care assessment we distinguished between characteristics available at diagnosis (age, gender, smoking status, marital status, comorbid disease, admission type, tumour stage and histology) from those available post diagnosis. A second aim was to examine the association between …

Numerical Studies Of Electrohydrodynamic Flow Induced By Corona And Dielectric Barrier Discharges, Chaoao Shi 2018 The University of Western Ontario

Numerical Studies Of Electrohydrodynamic Flow Induced By Corona And Dielectric Barrier Discharges, Chaoao Shi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Electrohyrodynamic (EHD) flow produced by gas discharges allows the control of airflow through electrostatic forces. Various promising applications of EHD can be considered, but this requires a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms involved.

This thesis investigates the EHD flow generated by three forms of gas discharge. First, a multiple pin-plate EHD dryer associated with the positive corona discharge is studied using a stationary model. Second, the dynamics of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator is simulated with a time-dependent solver. Third, different configurations of the extended DBD are explored to enhance the EHD flow.

The results of the …

Theoretical Analysis Of Nonlinear Differential Equations, Emily Jean Weymier 2018 Stephen F Austin State University

Theoretical Analysis Of Nonlinear Differential Equations, Emily Jean Weymier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nonlinear differential equations arise as mathematical models of various phenomena. Here, various methods of solving and approximating linear and nonlinear differential equations are examined. Since analytical solutions to nonlinear differential equations are rare and difficult to determine, approximation methods have been developed. Initial and boundary value problems will be discussed. Several linear and nonlinear techniques to approximate or solve the linear or nonlinear problems are demonstrated. Regular and singular perturbation theory and Magnus expansions are our particular focus. Each section offers several examples to show how each technique is implemented along with the use of visuals to demonstrate the accuracy, …

Numerical Approximation Of Diffusive Capture Rates By Planar And Spherical Surfaces With Absorbing Pores, Andrew J. Bernoff, Alan E. Lindsay

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In 1977 Berg and Purcell published a landmark paper entitled Physics of Chemore- ception, which examined how a bacterium can sense a chemical attractant in the fluid surrounding it [H. C. Berg and E. M. Purcell, Biophys J, 20 (1977), pp. 193–219]. At small scales the attrac- tant molecules move by Brownian motion and diffusive processes dominate. This example is the archetype of diffusive signaling problems where an agent moves via a random walk until it either strikes or eludes a target. Berg and Purcell modeled the target as a sphere with a set of small circular targets (pores) that …

Truancy In High School, Itzel Ruiz, Jason Mink, Xochitl Aleman

SPACE: Student Perspectives About Civic Engagement

The main focus of this project is to analyze students’ poor attendance in order to understand the applicable factors as to why upperclassmen tend to miss more school than students in younger grades. We will be focusing on how students relationships with parents and teachers affect upperclassmen attendance. An anonymous ten question survey was given to five Junior and Senior Civics and U.S. History classes at Steinmetz College Prep high school. The questions were geared towards the students days absent during the school year, and their relationship with teachers and parents. Majority of the students surveyed missed more than 20 …

An Interval Arithmetic Newton Method For Solving Systems Of Nonlinear Equations, Ronald I. Greenberg, Eldon R. Hansen 2018 Washington University in St. Louis

An Interval Arithmetic Newton Method For Solving Systems Of Nonlinear Equations, Ronald I. Greenberg, Eldon R. Hansen

Ronald Greenberg

We introduce an interval Newton method for bounding solutions of systems of nonlinear equations. It entails three sub-algorithms. The first is a Gauss-Seidel type step. The second is a real (non-interval) Newton iteration. The third solves the linearized equations by elimination. We explain why each sub-algorithm is desirable and how they fit together to provide solutions in as little as 1/3 to 1/4 the time required by a commonly used method due to Krawczyk.

Investigation Of Volatile Organic Compounds (Vocs) Detected At Vapor Intrusion Sites, Mohammadyousef Roghani 2018 University of Kentucky

Investigation Of Volatile Organic Compounds (Vocs) Detected At Vapor Intrusion Sites, Mohammadyousef Roghani

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

This dissertation investigates unexplained vapor intrusion field data sets that have been observed at hazardous waste sites, including: 1) non-linear soil gas concentration trends between the VOC source (i.e. contaminated groundwater plume) and the ground surface; and, 2) alternative pathways that serve as entry points for vapors to infiltrate into buildings and serve to increase VOC exposure risks as compared to the classic vapor intrusion model, which primarily considered foundation cracks as the route for vapor entry. The overall hypothesis of this research is that theoretical knowledge of fate and transport processes can be systematically applied to vapor intrusion field …

Random Walks On Simple Two-Dimensional Manifolds, Tom Eichlersmith 2018 Hamline University

Random Walks On Simple Two-Dimensional Manifolds, Tom Eichlersmith

Departmental Honors Projects

A C++ implementation of random walks is constructed with examples for the plane, sphere, and torus included. This package is available publicly, and can be expanded to different situations on the included surfaces as well as other surfaces. The random walks are studied by measuring how long they take to reach a pre-defined escape region on the surface. These escape regions and their interaction with the surface are what affect the behavior of the random walks the most.

High-Order Integral Equation Methods For Quasi-Magnetostatic And Corrosion-Related Field Analysis With Maritime Applications, Robert Pfeiffer 2018 University of Kentucky

High-Order Integral Equation Methods For Quasi-Magnetostatic And Corrosion-Related Field Analysis With Maritime Applications, Robert Pfeiffer

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

This dissertation presents techniques for high-order simulation of electromagnetic fields, particularly for problems involving ships with ferromagnetic hulls and active corrosion-protection systems.

A set of numerically constrained hexahedral basis functions for volume integral equation discretization is presented in a method-of-moments context. Test simulations demonstrate the accuracy achievable with these functions as well as the improvement brought about in system conditioning when compared to other basis sets.

A general method for converting between a locally-corrected Nyström discretization of an integral equation and a method-of-moments discretization is presented next. Several problems involving conducting and magnetic-conducting materials are solved to verify the accuracy …

Understanding The Nature Of Nanoscale Wetting Through All-Atom Simulations, Oliver Evans 2018 The University of Akron

Understanding The Nature Of Nanoscale Wetting Through All-Atom Simulations, Oliver Evans

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The spreading behavior of spherical and cylindrical water droplets between 30Å and 100Å in radius on a sapphire surface is investigated using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations for durations on the order of tens of nanoseconds. A monolayer film develops rapidly and wets the surface, while the bulk of the droplet spreads on top of the monolayer, maintaining the shape of a spherical cap. Unlike previous simulations in the literature, the bulk radius is found to increase to a maximum value and receed as the monolayer continues to expand. Simple time and droplet size dependence is observed for monolayer radius and …

A Model To Predict Concentrations And Uncertainty For Mercury Species In Lakes, Ashley Hendricks 2018 Michigan Technological University

A Model To Predict Concentrations And Uncertainty For Mercury Species In Lakes, Ashley Hendricks

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

To increase understanding of mercury cycling, a seasonal mass balance model was developed to predict mercury concentrations in lakes and fish. Results indicate that seasonality in mercury cycling is significant and is important for a northern latitude lake. Models, when validated, have the potential to be used as an alternative to measurements; models are relatively inexpensive and are not as time intensive. Previously published mercury models have neglected to perform a thorough validation. Model validation allows for regulators to be able to make more informed, confident decisions when using models in water quality management. It is critical to quantify uncertainty; …

Evaporation Of A Sessile Droplet On A Slope, Mitch Timm 2018 Michigan Technological University

Evaporation Of A Sessile Droplet On A Slope, Mitch Timm

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

We theoretically examine the drying of a stationary liquid droplet on an inclined surface. Both analytical and numerical approaches are considered, while assuming that the evaporation results from a purely diffusive transport of the liquid vapor and that the contact line is a pinned circle. For the purposes of our analytical calculations, we suppose that the effect of gravity relative to the surface tension is weak, i.e. the Bond number (Bo) is small. Then, we express the shape of the drop and the vapor concentration field as perturbation expansions in terms of Bo. When the Bond number is zero, the …

Computing Eigenmodes Of Elliptic Operators On Manifolds Using Radial Basis Functions, Vladimir Delengov 2018 Claremont Colleges

Computing Eigenmodes Of Elliptic Operators On Manifolds Using Radial Basis Functions, Vladimir Delengov

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In this work, a numerical approach based on meshless methods is proposed to obtain eigenmodes of Laplace-Beltrami operator on manifolds, and its performance is compared against existing alternative methods. Radial Basis Function (RBF)-based methods allow one to obtain interpolation and differentiation matrices easily by using scattered data points. We derive expressions for such matrices for the Laplace-Beltrami operator via so-called Reilly’s formulas and use them to solve the respective eigenvalue problem. Numerical studies of proposed methods are performed in order to demonstrate convergence on simple examples of one-dimensional curves and two-dimensional surfaces.

High Accuracy Methods And Regularization Techniques For Fluid Flows And Fluid-Fluid Interaction, Mustafa Aggul 2018 Michigan Technological University

High Accuracy Methods And Regularization Techniques For Fluid Flows And Fluid-Fluid Interaction, Mustafa Aggul

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation contains several approaches to resolve irregularity issues of CFD problems, including a decoupling of non-linearly coupled fluid-fluid interaction, due to high Reynolds number. New models present not only regularize the linear systems but also produce high accurate solutions both in space and time. To achieve this goal, methods solve a computationally attractive artificial viscosity approximation of the target problem, and then utilize a correction approach to make it high order accurate. This way, they all allow the usage of legacy code | a frequent requirement in the simulation of fluid flows in complex geometries. In addition, they all …

Pseudo-Companion Matrices For Polynomial Systems, Melinda Kleczynski 2018 Michigan Technological University

Pseudo-Companion Matrices For Polynomial Systems, Melinda Kleczynski

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Roots of a scalar polynomial in one variable are frequently found by computing the eigenvalues of the standard companion matrix. In this exploratory work, we introduce the pseudo-companion matrix for finding roots of multivariable polynomial systems. In some cases, a perturbation of the polynomial system is used for the matrix construction, yielding approximate roots of the original polynomial system. The coordinates of the roots, or their approximations, are obtained from the eigenvectors of this matrix. In this thesis, we describe the process of constructing the pseudo-companion matrix and computing the polynomial roots using illustrative examples.
