Multilayer Network Model Of Gender Bias And Homophily In Hierarchical Structures, 2023 Claremont Colleges
Multilayer Network Model Of Gender Bias And Homophily In Hierarchical Structures, Emerson Mcmullen
HMC Senior Theses
Although women have made progress in entering positions in academia and
industry, they are still underrepresented at the highest levels of leadership.
Two factors that may contribute to this leaky pipeline are gender bias,
the tendency to treat individuals differently based on the person’s gender
identity, and homophily, the tendency of people to want to be around those
who are similar to themselves. Here, we present a multilayer network model
of gender representation in professional hierarchies that incorporates these
two factors. This model builds on previous work by Clifton et al. (2019), but
the multilayer network framework allows us to …
Dynamic Function Learning Through Control Of Ensemble Systems, 2023 Washington University in St. Louis
Dynamic Function Learning Through Control Of Ensemble Systems, Wei Zhang, Vignesh Narayanan, Jr-Shin Li
Publications
Learning tasks involving function approximation are preva- lent in numerous domains of science and engineering. The underlying idea is to design a learning algorithm that gener- ates a sequence of functions converging to the desired target function with arbitrary accuracy by using the available data samples. In this paper, we present a novel interpretation of iterative function learning through the lens of ensemble dy- namical systems, with an emphasis on establishing the equiv- alence between convergence of function learning algorithms and asymptotic behavior of ensemble systems. In particular, given a set of observation data in a function learning task, we …
Dynamical Aspects In (4+1)-Body Problems, 2023 Wilfrid Laurier University
Dynamical Aspects In (4+1)-Body Problems, Ryan Gauthier
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The n-body problem models a system of n-point masses that attract each other via some binary interaction. The (n + 1)-body problem assumes that one of the masses is located at the origin of the coordinate system. For example, an (n+1)-body problem is an ideal model for Saturn, seen as the central mass, and one of its outer rings. A relative equilibrium (RE) is a special solution of the (n+1)-body problem where the non-central bodies rotate rigidly about the centre of mass. In rotating coordinates, these solutions become equilibria.
In this thesis we study dynamical aspects of planar (4 + …

(R1522) Modelling The Influence Of Desertic Aerosols On The Transmission Dynamics Of Neisseria Meningitidis Serogroup A, Francis Signing, Berge Tsanou, Samuel Bowong
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper assesses the role of desert aerosols and vaccine on the transmission dynamics of Neisseria Meningitis serogroup A (NmA). It is biologically well-documented that the inhalation of aerosol dust and its presence in the nasal cavity weakens the nasopharyngeal mucosa by damaging the mucosal barrier and inhibiting the mucosal immune defenses of susceptible and vaccinated individuals. We address the latter by proposing and analyzing a mathematical model for the dynamics of NmA that specifically accounts for the fast progression of susceptible and vaccinated individuals to the invasive stage of the disease. We compute the basic reproduction number and use …

(Si10-057) Effect Of Time-Delay On An Sir Type Model For Infectious Diseases With Saturated Treatment, 2022 Banaras Hindu University
(Si10-057) Effect Of Time-Delay On An Sir Type Model For Infectious Diseases With Saturated Treatment, R. P. Gupta, Arun Kumar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This study presents the complex dynamics of an SIR epidemic model incorporating a constant time-delay in incidence rate with saturated type of treatment rate. The system is studied to observe the effect of time lag in the asymptotic stability of endemic equilibrium states. We also establish global asymptotic stability of both disease-free and endemic equilibrium states by Lyapunov direct method with the help of suitable Lyapunov functionals. The existences of periodic solutions are ensured for the suitable choice of delay parameter. Finally, we perform numerical simulations supporting the analytical findings as well as to observe the effect of time-delay. The …

Entropy Analysis Of Sutterby Nanofluid Flow Over A Riga Sheet With Gyrotactic Microorganisms And Cattaneo–Christov Double Diffusion, M. Faizan, F. Ali, K. Loganathan, A. Zaib, C. A. Reddy, Sara I. Abdelsalam
Basic Science Engineering
In this article, a Riga plate is exhibited with an electric magnetization actuator consisting of permanent magnets and electrodes assembled alternatively. This exhibition produces electromagnetic hydrodynamic phenomena over a fluid flow. A new study model is formed with the Sutterby nanofluid flow through the Riga plate, which is crucial to the structure of several industrial and entering advancements, including thermal nuclear reactors, flow metres and nuclear reactor design. This article addresses the entropy analysis of Sutterby nanofluid flow over the Riga plate. The Cattaneo–Christov heat and mass flux were used to examine the behaviour of heat and mass relaxation time. …

Ocean Wave Prediction And Characterization For Intelligent Maritime Transportation, Pujan Pokhrel
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The national Earth System Prediction (ESPC) initiative aims to develop the predictions
for the next generation predictions of atmosphere, ocean, and sea-ice interactions in the scale of days to decades. This dissertation seeks to demonstrate the methods we can use to improve the ESPC models, especially the ocean prediction model. In the application side of the weather forecasts, this dissertation explores imitation learning with constraints to solve combinatorial optimization problems, focusing on the weather routing of surface vessels. Prediction of ocean waves is essential for various purposes, including vessel routing, ocean energy harvesting, agriculture, etc. Since the machine learning approaches …
Maintaining Ecosystem And Economic Structure In A Three-Species Dynamical System In Chesapeake Bay, 2022 United States Air Force Academy
Maintaining Ecosystem And Economic Structure In A Three-Species Dynamical System In Chesapeake Bay, Maila Hallare, Iordanka Panayotova
CODEE Journal
We consider a three-species fish dynamical system in Chesapeake Bay consisting of the Atlantic menhaden as the prey and its two competing predators, the striped bass and the catfish. Building on our previous work in this system, we consider the issue of balancing economic harvesting goals (financial gain for fishermen) with ecological harvesting goals (non-extinction of species). In particular, we investigate the bionomic equilibria, maximum sustainable yield, and the maximum economic yield. Analytical computations and numerical simulations are employed to provide some mathematical guidance on fisheries management policies.

Developing A Miniature Smart Boat For Marine Research, Michael Isaac Eirinberg
Computer Engineering
This project examines the development of a smart boat which could serve as a possible marine research apparatus. The smart boat consists of a miniature vessel containing a low-cost microcontroller to live stream a camera feed, GPS telemetry, and compass data through its own WiFi access point. The smart boat also has the potential for autonomous navigation. My project captivated the interest of several members of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo’s (Cal Poly SLO) Marine Science Department faculty, who proposed a variety of fascinating and valuable smart boat applications.

(R1889) Analysis Of Resonant Curve In The Earth-Moon System Under The Effect Of Resistive Force And Earth’S Equatorial Ellipticity, Sushil Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, Rajiv Aggarwal
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In the present paper, we have determined the equations of motion of the Moon in spherical coordinate system using the gravitational potential of Earth. Using perturbation, equations of motion are reduced to a second order differential equation. From the solution, two types of resonance are observed: (i) due to the frequencies–rate of change of Earth’s equatorial ellipticity parameter and Earth’s rotation rate, and (ii) due to the frequencies–angular velocity of the bary-center around the sun and Earth’s rotation rate. Resonant curves are drawn where oscillatory amplitude becomes infinitely large at the resonant points. The effect of Earth’s equatorial ellipticity parameter …
Symmetry-Inspired Analysis Of Biological Networks, 2022 The Graduate Center, City University of New York
Symmetry-Inspired Analysis Of Biological Networks, Ian Leifer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The description of a complex system like gene regulation of a cell or a brain of an animal in terms of the dynamics of each individual element is an insurmountable task due to the complexity of interactions and the scores of associated parameters. Recent decades brought about the description of these systems that employs network models. In such models the entire system is represented by a graph encapsulating a set of independently functioning objects and their interactions. This creates a level of abstraction that makes the analysis of such large scale system possible. Common practice is to draw conclusions about …
