Clinical And Immunomodulating Effects Of Ketamine In Horses With Experimental Endotoxemia, Cody J. Alcott, Brett A. Sponseller, David M. Wong, J. L. Davis, A. M. Soliman, Chong Wang, Walter H. Hsu
Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine Publications
Background: Ketamine has immunomodulating effects both in vitro and in vivo during experimental endotoxemia in humans, rodents, and dogs.
Hypothesis: Subanesthetic doses of ketamine will attenuate the clinical and immunologic responses to experimental endotoxemia in horses.
Animals: Nineteen healthy mares of various breeds.
Methods: Experimental study. Horses were randomized into 2 groups: ketamine-treated horses (KET; n = 9) and saline-treated horses (SAL; n = 10). Both groups received 30 ng/kg of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, Escherichia coli, O55:B5) 1 hour after the start of a continuous rate infusion (CRI) of racemic ketamine (KET) or physiologic saline (SAL). Clinical and hematological responses were ...
Sensitivity And Specificity Of A Nested Polymerase Chain Reaction For Detection Of Lentivirus Infection In Lions (Panthera Leo), 2010 University of Tennessee - Knoxville
Sensitivity And Specificity Of A Nested Polymerase Chain Reaction For Detection Of Lentivirus Infection In Lions (Panthera Leo), H Adams, M Van Vuuren, Stephen Kania, A Bosman, D Keet, J New, Melissa Kennedy

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus in the Retroviridae family that causes lifelong infection in domestic cats. The lentivirus of African lions (Panthera leo), referred to as FIVple, is endemic in certain lion populations in eastern and southern Africa. Lentivirus infection leads to immunologic dysfunction and immunosuppressive disease in domestic cats; however, little is known about the pathogenic effects of infection in lions, nor about the epidemiologic impact on free-ranging and captive populations. Whole blood and serum samples were collected opportunistically from free-ranging lions in Kruger National Park, Republic of South Africa (RSA). Whole blood and serum samples were ...
Determination Of Carboplatin In Canine Plasma By High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, 2010 University of Tennessee - Knoxville
Determination Of Carboplatin In Canine Plasma By High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Nicolas Villarino, Sherry Cox, Jason Yarbrough, Tomas Martin-Jimenez
Carboplatin is an antineoplastic drug administered to treat different tumoral conditions in canine oncology. The objective of this study was to validate a high-performance chromatographic (HPLC) method which could be applied in canine pharmacokinetic studies. Following ultrafiltration using a Centrifree device, standards, quality controls and plasma samples were separated by isocratic reversed-phase HPLC on an Inertsil ODS-2 (250 × 4.6 mm i.d.) analytical column and quantified using UV detection at 220 nm. The mobile phase was potassium phosphate (pH 4.5), with a flow-rate of 1.0 mL/min. The procedure produced a linear curve (r2 > 0.999) over ...
Mechanisms Of The Extreme Sensitivity Of Turkeys To Aflatoxin B1, 2010 Utah State University
Mechanisms Of The Extreme Sensitivity Of Turkeys To Aflatoxin B1, Sumit Rawal
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The pathogenesis of hepatotoxic and hepatocarcinogenic actions of the mycotoxin aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) involves initial bioactivation by microsomal cytochrome P450s (P450) to a reactive and electrophilic intermediate, exo-aflatoxin B1-8,9-epoxide (exo-AFBO). Poultry, especially turkeys, are extremely sensitive to AFB1, a condition associated with efficient epoxidation by P450s. The purpose of this research was to 1) discover and characterize the P450s in turkey liver responsible for AFB1 bioactivation, and 2) determine the relative importance of these P450s in turkey liver. Initial investigations led to the discovery of CYP1A5. We then identified CYP3A37, a human CYP3A4 homologue from turkey liver, which along ...
Measurement Of C-Peptide Concentrations And Responses To Somatostatin, Glucose Infusion, And Insulin Resistance In Horses, 2010 University of Tennessee - Knoxville
Measurement Of C-Peptide Concentrations And Responses To Somatostatin, Glucose Infusion, And Insulin Resistance In Horses, F. Toth, N. Frank, Tomas Martin-Jimenez, S. Elliott, R. Geor, R. Boston
Reasons for performing study: Hyperinsulinaemia is detected in horses with insulin resistance (IR) and has previously been attributed to increased pancreatic insulin secretion. Connecting peptide (C-peptide) can be measured to assess pancreatic function because it is secreted in equimolar amounts with insulin and does not undergo hepatic clearance. Hypothesis: A human double antibody radioimmunoassay (RIA) detects C-peptide in equine serum and concentrations would reflect responses to different stimuli and conditions. Methods: A validation procedure was performed to assess the RIA. Six mature mares were selected and somatostatin administered i.v. as a primed continuous rate infusion, followed by 50 nmol ...
