Evaluation Of Plasma Diazepam And Nordiazepam Concentrations Following Administration Of Diazepam Intravenously Or Via Suppository Per Rectum In Dogs, C Probst, William Thomas, T Moyers, Tomas Martin, Sherry Cox

Tomás Martín-Jiménez

Objective-To evaluate the pharmacokinetics of diazepam administered per rectum via compounded (ie, not commercially available) suppositories and determine whether a dose of 2 mg/kg in this formulation would result in plasma concentrations shown to be effective for control of status epilepticus or cluster seizures (ie, 150 to 300 ng/mL) in dogs within a clinically useful interval (10 to 15 minutes). Animals-6 healthy mixed-breed dogs. Procedures-Dogs were randomly assigned to 2 groups of 3 dogs each in a crossover-design study. Diazepam (2 mg/kg) was administered IV or via suppository per rectum, and blood samples were collected at predetermined ...

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Appearance Of Intracranial Hemorrhage Secondary To Cerebral Vascular Malformation In A Dog, William Thomas, William Adams, M McGavin, Rebecca Gompf 2013 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Appearance Of Intracranial Hemorrhage Secondary To Cerebral Vascular Malformation In A Dog, William Thomas, William Adams, M Mcgavin, Rebecca Gompf

William B. Thomas, MS, DACVIM (Neurology)

A 14-year-old dog developed an acute onset of depression, disorientation, left hemiparesis, left hemianopia, left facial hypoesthesia, and a tendency to turn to the right. Based on these findings, a lesion affecting the right forebrain was suspected. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass within the right cerebral hemisphere resulting in compression of the right lateral ventricle and shifting the longitudinal fissure to the left. The lesion was hyperintense on T1-weighted images and hyperintense with focal regions of hypointensity on proton density-, and T2-weighted images, consistent with a subacute hemorrhage. At necropsy, there was a hematoma in the parietal portion of ...

William H Adams, DVM, DACVR

Effective teaching of veterinary radiology can be challenging in a traditional classroom environment. Audience response systems, colloquially known as "clickers," provide a means of encouraging student interaction. The purpose of this study was to compare student performance and course evaluations before and after using the Classroom Performance System™ in the third-year (fifth semester) didactic radiology course at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Overall student performance was assessed by comparing median numeric final course grades (%) between years without and with use of the Classroom Performance System™. Grades of students were determined for individual instructors' sections. Student evaluations of ...

Staphylococcus Pseudintermedius: Population Genetics And Antimicrobial Resistance, Ricardo Videla 2013 University of Tennessee - Knoxville

Staphylococcus Pseudintermedius: Population Genetics And Antimicrobial Resistance, Ricardo Videla

Masters Theses

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a Gram-positive coagulase-negative coccus. It is a normal inhabitant of the skin of dogs. However, clinical disease can be observed in animals that are immunossuppressed or if the skin barrier is altered. This bacterium is recognized as the main cause of canine pyoderma and has also been associated with other conditions such as infection of the urinary tract, the ears, and surgical wounds.

Methicillin resistance and resistance to other antimicrobials regularly used by veterinarians is common among S. pseudintermedius which can complicate treatment. The first report of mecA, gene responsible for methicillin resistance, in S. pseudintermedius is ...

Kinetic And Kinematic Evaluation Of Compensatory Movements Of The Head, Pelvis And Thoraco-Lumbar Spine Associated With Asymmetrical Weight Bearing Of The Pelvic Limbs In Dogs, David Alan Hicks 2013 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Kinetic And Kinematic Evaluation Of Compensatory Movements Of The Head, Pelvis And Thoraco-Lumbar Spine Associated With Asymmetrical Weight Bearing Of The Pelvic Limbs In Dogs, David Alan Hicks

Doctoral Dissertations

The purposes of this dissertation were to 1) determine ground reaction forces of dogs with mild asymmetrical weight-bearing of the pelvic limbs while trotting and 2) use three-dimensional motion analysis to identify compensatory vertical motion of the head and pelvis, and lateral motion of the thoraco-lumbar spine in dogs with mild asymmetrical weight-bearing of the pelvic limbs while trotting, and 3) use this information to introduce a subjective grading system for the pelvic limbs in dogs. Our hypotheses were that dogs with asymmetric weight bearing demonstrate compensatory motions of the head, pelvis and thoraco-lumbar spine while trotting, and that these ...

Pcr Amplification And Dna Sequencing Of Demodex Injai From Otic Secretions Of A Dog, M Milosevic, Linda Frank, R Brahmbhatt, Stephen Kania 2013 University of Tennessee - Knoxville

Pcr Amplification And Dna Sequencing Of Demodex Injai From Otic Secretions Of A Dog, M Milosevic, Linda Frank, R Brahmbhatt, Stephen Kania

Stephen A Kania

BACKGROUND: The identification of Demodex mites from dogs is usually based on morphology and location. Mites with uncharacteristic features or from unusual locations, hosts or disease manifestations could represent new species not previously described; however, this is difficult to determine based on morphology alone. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to identify and confirm Demodex injai in association with otitis externa in a dog using PCR amplification and DNA sequencing. METHODS: Otic samples were obtained from a beagle in which a long-bodied Demodex mite was identified. For comparison, Demodex mite samples were collected from a swab and scraping ...

Vulvar Pythiosis In Two Captive Camels (Camelus Dromedarius), Ricardo Videla, Sarel Van Amstel, Linda Frank, Sherry Newman, Raquel Vilela, L Mendoza

Sarel R Van Amstel BVSc, Dip Med Vet, M MED VET, DACVIM

Two camels (Camelus dromedarius), 3- and 4-years-old, respectively, from an eastern Tennessee wildlife farm presented with persistent weight loss and large vulvar masses. An initial biopsy of the vulvar mass of one of the camels performed by a local veterinarian showed eosinophilic dermatitis. An allergic or parasitic dermatitis was suspected. The two camels were treated with one dose of sodium iodide (66 mg/kg, in 1.0 L of normosolR, IV) and ivermectin 1% (200 ug/kg PO). Upon presentation at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Tennessee, additional biopsies of the masses again revealed eosinophilic dermatitis. Microscopic examination of ...

Compassion Fatigue Or Ethics Exhaustion?, Sonnya Dennis

International Veterinary Social Work Summit

Compassion Fatigue or Ethics Exhaustion?

In veterinary practice, the diagnosis is critical for proper treatment. Different diseases can cause the same symptoms, and while palliative treatment is sometimes necessary, ideally we want prevention or cure. In this talk, I will speak from the experiential perspective of companion animal general practice about the very real and common problem of compassion fatigue, and why it is different from, and can mask, what I call Ethics Exhaustion. In brief, I define Ethics Exhaustion as the feeling of being powerless to even try to do what you think that you ethically should do, because ...
