Concussion Rehabilitation: Vestibular And Physiotherapy, Amia Pelletier, Jordan Wing 2018 University of Southern Maine

Concussion Rehabilitation: Vestibular And Physiotherapy, Amia Pelletier, Jordan Wing

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Recent research has come out to suggest that a prolonged resting period after a concussion may not be the most beneficial way to recover. Many doctors of physical therapy seem to have a consensus that athletes that acquire a sports-related concussion should seek treatment through body movement, not the typical resting and abstaining from exercise protocol. Recent research has shown that vestibular and physiotherapy will reduce the recovery time after a concussion. Seventy-one percent of a treatment group had returned within eight weeks, compared to seven percent in a control group. The participants in the treatment group were four times …

Effects Of Headgear On Concussions In Soccer Players, Bayley Pendleton 2018 University of Southern Maine

Effects Of Headgear On Concussions In Soccer Players, Bayley Pendleton

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Concussions have become a hot topic among athletic health care, but there is still a great deal to learn. One specific population has been studied and research produced showing the effects of wearing protective headgear. For some reason, adolescent soccer players are more apt to suffer a concussion. Taking steps to reduce recovery time and make concussions less common is something that should be addressed. The studies done showing the effects of headgear in adolescent soccer players is a topic that needs to be more widely known.

Does The Application Of Kinesiology Tape Aid In Increasing Venous Flow, K. Fitzgerald, Victoria Saunders 2018 University of Southern Maine

Does The Application Of Kinesiology Tape Aid In Increasing Venous Flow, K. Fitzgerald, Victoria Saunders

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Kinesiology tape has become extremely popular among athletes of all ages. It’s bright colors and the unique patterns created by the tape have gained an astonishing amount of attention. KT tape is a highly elastic tape that is advertised to increase muscle proprioception, reduce pain, and increase the space between fascial layers for higher venous flow. There has been a large amount of controversy surrounding KT tape and the placebo effects its usage may have. The purpose of this study is to determine if kinesiology tape actually increases venous flow which will result in a reduction of edema and ecchymosis …

Health Policy Responses And Infrastructure Re-Use In Host Cities Of Mega-Sporting Events In Non-Traditional Host Countries, Andrew Kramer

Honors Theses

The IOC has increased their focus on long-term effects for hosts of the Olympic Games, coinciding with increased academic interest in studying the positive and negative legacies of mega-sporting events in the host city. Recently, cities in relatively underdeveloped countries have won bids for mega-sporting events. City officials and the IOC have begun marketing mega-sporting events as transformational events for underdeveloped cities’ economies, urban infrastructure, social landscape, and health. The thesis investigates the impact of hosting mega-sporting events for public health and infrastructure in three case studies: the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 2014 Winter Olympics …

Interference Of The Inflammasome Via Interferonβ, Madeline Sauer 2018 University of Dayton

Interference Of The Inflammasome Via Interferonβ, Madeline Sauer

Honors Theses

Metabolic disorders such as type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity are known to have a chronic low grade inflammatory tissue environment as well as an increase in excess lipids. Current research suggests that a tightly regulated oligoprotein complex known as the NLRP3 inflammasome is highly activated in T2DM and obesity. However, it is not well understood the interplay between excess lipids, which was previously shown in our lab to cause lysosome damage, and inflammation. A key transcription factor that is known to have both an inflammatory effect as well as an effect on lipid metabolism is PPARγ. For this …

The Y Can’T Do It All: Examining The Decline Of Participation In Youth Athletics, Ian Allen 2018 University of Southern Maine

The Y Can’T Do It All: Examining The Decline Of Participation In Youth Athletics, Ian Allen

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Nationally, since 2008, participation in youth sports (ages 6-17) has dropped significantly. The declining trend--from 45% down to 37%-- can be attributed to many factors

  • The rising cost associated with general participation in programs, especially at the middle and high school levels
  • Early specialization in one sport along with the introduction of hypercompetitiveness in younger age groups
  • The need for coaches to have much more training and certification to get a foot in the door at schools and recreation programs around the country.

These factors cause a significant divide between underprivileged and privileged youth, creating a situation of haves and …

Patterns Of Social Skill Development Over-Time Among Clusters Of LifeSports Participants, Dawn Anderson-Butcher, Eric Martin, Lauren Paluta, Dan Gould

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although growing in prevalence, little is known about how and for whom sport-based positive youth development (PYD) programs make a difference. This study addresses two gaps: A lack of multi-year studies and limited research differentiating outcomes between groups of participants. Specifically, this study uses repeated measures ANOVAs and hierarchical and non-hierarchical modeling procedures to investigate outcomes among two clusters of underserved youth who participated in two consecutive LiFEsports summer camps. Two hundred and thirty one youth participated, with the majority African American (87%) and male (62%). The average age of participants was 10.71 years. Participants completed surveys to assess …

An Examination Of Athletic Directors' Perceptions Of The Utilization Of Athletic Trainers In The Secondary School Setting, Stephanie H. Clines 2018 Old Dominion University

An Examination Of Athletic Directors' Perceptions Of The Utilization Of Athletic Trainers In The Secondary School Setting, Stephanie H. Clines

Health Services Research Dissertations

Many secondary school athletes are lacking appropriate medical care during sport participation. Athletic trainers (ATs) are qualified healthcare professionals that can fill this need. Barriers to hiring ATs within this setting have been identified, however important information from administrators is lacking on why secondary schools choose to utilize ATs. Understanding this decision making process has the potential to guide future strategies to increase the number of secondary schools that employ ATs and improve retention of athletic training positions within the secondary school setting.

Our objective was to explore athletic directors’ perceptions of the roles and services provided by ATs working …

Effects Of Mental Imagery Use On Anxiety, Confidence, Mental Well-Being, And Performance In Track And Field Athletes, Sarah J. Deck, Despina Kouali, Craig Hall Dr.

Western Research Forum

Background: Student athletes can experience a number of stressors above and beyond those of their classmates, one being competition anxiety in their specific sport, which is common among varsity athletes (Storch, Storch, Killiany, & Roberti, 2005). Unfortunately, the tools to help with the demands of their sport mentally are often overlooked by not only the athletes, but their coaches, teammates, and supporters. The purpose of the present study was to introduce imagery as a tool to help deal with competition anxiety (i.e., fear of failure), and to improve confidence, mental well-being, and performance.

Methods: Two female varsity level throwers ( …

Developing A Footswitch Device To Assess The Likelihood Of Falls In At-Risk Populations, Arash Mohammadzadeh Gonabadi 2018 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Developing A Footswitch Device To Assess The Likelihood Of Falls In At-Risk Populations, Arash Mohammadzadeh Gonabadi

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Falls are one of the major cause of injuries, reduced functioning and even mortality in older adults. Most of the falls occur during walking, so considering the mechanics of gait during walking can provide insight to identify the risk of fall in this population. A component of walking mechanics associated with falling in the elderly is gait variability (i.e. the inherent natural fluctuations between strides). Healthy states are associated with an optimal level of movement variability reflecting the adaptability of the underlying control system, while pathological gait can be either too regular, or periodic, or too random and disordered. In …

Dynamic Stability Association With Cost Of Transport Is Different In Patients With Copd Compared To Healthy Controls, Farahnaz Fallah Tafti 2018 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Dynamic Stability Association With Cost Of Transport Is Different In Patients With Copd Compared To Healthy Controls, Farahnaz Fallah Tafti

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), suffer from deficits in their functional performance besides their lung disease. In this situation, increased muscle activity is needed to provide safe walking patterns, stability while walking. This increase in muscle activity leads to increased metabolic cost, i.e., using more oxygen to complete the task. The main objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between walking stability and metabolic cost in patients with COPD in comparison with age-matched controls. Seventeen patients with COPD and 23 healthy controls walked on a treadmill at three different speeds: preferred, fast (+20% preferred) and slow …
