Learning Bridge: Curricular Integration Of Didactic And Experiential Education, Reza Karimi, Cassandra S. Arendt, Pauline Cawley, Amber V. Buhler, Fawzy Elbarbry, Sigrid C. Roberts

Faculty Scholarship (PHRM)

Objectives. To assess the impact of a program to integrate introductory pharmacy practice experiences with pharmaceutical science topics by promoting active learning, self-directed learning skills, and critical-thinking skills.
Design. The Learning Bridge, a curriculum program, was created to better integrate the material first-year (P1) students learned in pharmaceutical science courses into their introductory pharmacy practice experiences. Four Learning Bridge assignments required students to interact with their preceptors and answer questions relating to the pharmaceutical science material concurrently covered in their didactic courses.
Assessment. Surveys of students and preceptors were conducted to measure the effectiveness of the Learning Bridge process. Feedback ...

Evaluation Of The Respironics Bipap® Auto Sv And Resmed Vpap Adapt Sv To Lung Simulator Generated Central And Obstructive Sleep Apneic Episodes., Grant Drake, Dawn Alverson

College of Health Sciences Poster Presentations

Background: Recent developments in non-invasive positive pressure ventilation have led to the production of adaptive servo-ventilation devices that examine an individual’s breathing characteristics and adjust pressure levels via a product specific algorithm. We evaluated two adaptive servo-ventilation devices, the Respironics BiPAP® auto SV™ and ResMed VPAP™ Adapt SV to lung simulator generated central and obstructive sleep apneic episodes.

Methods: Each system was adjusted to the following settings: EPAP minimum 4 cmH2O, IPAP maximum 15 cmH2O, adaptive modes, 15 breaths per minute. Each system was tested using its own brand of ventilation circuit and face mask (Respironics Comfort Gel ™Full ...

The first aim of the study is to assess the distribution of HIV-1 RNA levels in subtype C infection. Among 4,348 drug-naı¨ve HIV-positive individuals participating in clinical studies in Botswana, the median baseline plasma HIV-1 RNA levels differed between the general population cohorts (4.1–4.2 log10) and cART-initiating cohorts (5.1–5.3 log10) by about one log10. The proportion of individuals with high ($50,000 (4.7 log10) copies/ml) HIV-1 RNA levels ranged from 24%–28% in the general HIV-positive population cohorts to 65%–83% in cART-initiating cohorts. The second aim is to estimate ...

Risk Factors For Childhood Immunization Incompletion In Ethiopia, Sharmily G. Roy 2010 Georgia State University

Risk Factors For Childhood Immunization Incompletion In Ethiopia, Sharmily G. Roy

Public Health Theses

BACKGROUND: The under-5 mortality rate in Ethiopia is 118/1000. A child in Ethiopia is 30 times more likely to die before age 5 than a child in Western Europe. Children are the most vulnerable segment of the population, but many of the ailments that cause death in this population can be avoided by completion of routine childhood vaccination.

METHODS: Data regarding child health from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), a periodic cross-sectional survey administered at the household level was utilized in this study. Data from 8,905 mothers of living children between 0-5 years of age was included ...

Modulation Of Cocaine-Like Behavioural Activity By Serotonin Uptake Inhibition Relative To The Effects Of The Novel And Selective Dopamine Transporter Inhibitor, D-84, Angela Batman 2010 Virginia Commonwealth University

Modulation Of Cocaine-Like Behavioural Activity By Serotonin Uptake Inhibition Relative To The Effects Of The Novel And Selective Dopamine Transporter Inhibitor, D-84, Angela Batman

Theses and Dissertations

Cocaine dependence is a major health concern worldwide, but despite this high rate of abuse there are currently no approved therapies for cocaine dependence. Replacement pharmacotherapies are one possible approach for treating cocaine dependence, and identification of such therapeutics for cocaine abuse is the long-term goal of this research. Cocaine binds to, and inhibits uptake at the dopamine (DAT), serotonergic (SERT) and noradrenaline (NET) uptake transporters, but studies have shown that cocaine produces its strong behavioural and positive reinforcing effects through inhibition of the DAT. To this end a great number of diverse, non-selective DAT-inhibiting compounds have been investigated as ...

The Relationship Between Dieting History And Diet-Related Cognitive Schemata, Anna R. Walton 2010 Pacific University

The Relationship Between Dieting History And Diet-Related Cognitive Schemata, Anna R. Walton

School of Graduate Psychology

Although diets are currently the primary treatment for obesity, there are many psychological and physiological barriers to weight loss and maintenance, including the lack of reinforcement one obtains from dietary restriction. The purpose of this study is to investigate the hypothesis that a more extensive dieting history is correlated with more negative thoughts, or schemata, about diets. One hundred fifty participants, including current dieters (28), past dieters (61), and non-dieters (61) took a survey that included questions about dieting history, the Revised Restraint Scale, the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), and the Diet Schemata Questionnaire. Correlations and one-way analyses of variance ...

Physical Function During Performance-Based Tasks And Throughout Daily Life. Is It Different Across Levels Of Frailty?, Olga Theou 2010 The University of Western Ontario

Physical Function During Performance-Based Tasks And Throughout Daily Life. Is It Different Across Levels Of Frailty?, Olga Theou

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The overall aim of this thesis was to provide a more focused understanding about the physical function of older women across levels of frailty. The specific aims were: 1) Examine the physical function of older women across levels of frailty during performance-based tasks and throughout their normal daily life; and 2) Review the effectiveness of current exercise interventions for the management of frailty. To answer these aims an observational study of community-dwelling older women (63-100 years) from rural Greece and a comprehensive systematic review on the impact of exercise on frail older adults were conducted. The performance-based measures that had ...
