Background The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in South Asia is higher than in any other developing countries. The diversity of diets in populations among developing countries may be one explanation for the differences in CVD. This study was carried out to explore the association between dietary patterns and the presence of cardiovascular risk factors among Pakistani low income urban adults. Methods Socio demographic, physical activity and dietary information was collected from 1546 Pakistani subjects aged ≥40 years from the Control of Hypertension and Risk Attenuation (COBRA) study. Anthropometric, clinical and biomarker measures were assessed. Cluster analysis was used to …
Exploring Disparities In Underrepresented Minority Groups Of Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorders Using The Biopsychosocial Theoretical Model, 2017 Seton Hall University
Exploring Disparities In Underrepresented Minority Groups Of Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorders Using The Biopsychosocial Theoretical Model, Varleisha Gibbs
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background and Purpose of the Study
The rate of Autism continues to rise nationally. However, disparities in the age of diagnosis amongst underrepresented minority groups, still remains a major concern. Research supports that racial and ethnic disparities are key factors influencing noted age of diagnosis discrepancies. Traditionally, the medical community has used the biomedical or disability model, as revealed in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, to explore diagnostic differences. However, these models limit the healthcare professional’s ability to examine elements outside of pathology. In attempt to address the issue with a broader perspective, this study explored the various …
Looking Through The Window©: A Metacognitive Instrument To Teach Physical Exam To Pre-Clinical Pa Students, 2017 University of Nebraska Medical Center
Looking Through The Window©: A Metacognitive Instrument To Teach Physical Exam To Pre-Clinical Pa Students, Wayne Mathews
Posters and Presentations: Physician Assistant
The initial transition from pre-clinical learning to clinical immersion is a significant and unique phase in a PA student’s education when students transition from spending more time learning in the classroom to experiential learning in the clinical setting. One essential component of that transition is the teaching of physical examination skills. The author introduces an instrument based on metacognitive theories of learning called WINDOW©. The instrument is evaluated using two consecutive PA student surveys employing a Mixed Methods approach.
Student response gauged at two phases was positive: 79.31% agreed the WINDOW© instrument was relevant to clinical problem solving; 72.42% thought …

Housing Adjustment Behaviors Of Korean Elderly Immigrants Residing In Affordable Housing: The Cultural Aspects Of Residential Experiences, Myounghee Jorn
Theses and Dissertations
The present study is an explorative study that employs mixed methods for examining the daily life patterns and housing adjustment behaviors of low-income elderly Korean immigrants residing in public housing in the Chicago metropolitan area. It particularly focuses on identifying the cultural practices of research participants and the influence of those cultural practices on using residential features, evaluating them, and developing coping responses to satisfy dwelling needs.
The study develops upon Canter’s theories of place (1977; 1991; 1997) and Weisman’s model of place (2001), and integrates Rapoport’s concepts of culture (1980; 2008) for exploring the residential experiences of elderly Korean …
Exploring The Costs And Values Of The Household Model In Long Term Care, 2017 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Exploring The Costs And Values Of The Household Model In Long Term Care, Mark Alan Proffitt
Theses and Dissertations
As part of the culture change movement in long term care, nursing homes are transforming into person centered living settings that reject the previous medical emphasis that dominated the industry. The household model is one approach to achieve this goal by systemically altering the traditional nursing home’s organization, routines and physical setting with an emphasis on recreating familiar, domestic places for its residents. The household model is hallmarked by three key characteristics: 1) the creation of a smaller functional group of residents within the nursing home that is delineated by the environment (24 residents or less) with the 2) intent …

Effectiveness Of Pictorial Health Warning Labels For Indonesia's Cigarette Packages, Dien Anshari
Theses and Dissertations
Pictorial health warning labels (PHWL) on cigarette packaging is a key way to communicate with consumers about the harms from tobacco, particularly in the low- and middle-income countries that do not have the resources for effective mass media campaigns. Research is needed to determine the most effective PHWL content for Indonesia, a country with one of the largest populations of smokers in the world and amongst the weakest tobacco policy environments. This research aimed to determine the most effective PHWL content for Indonesia’s cigarette packages, including the social and psychological factors that may influence PHWL effects.

When One Is Sick And Two Need Help: Caregivers’ Perspectives On The Negative Consequences Of Caring, Ilja Ormel, Susan Law, Courtney Abbott, Mark Yaffe, Marc Saint-Cyr, Kerry Kuluski, Debbie Josephson, Ann C. Macaulay
Patient Experience Journal
Informal or family caregivers contribute significantly to individual care, and to the Canadian healthcare system, yet receive limited support from governments, institutions, and healthcare professionals in recognition of their role, or in response to their health and social care needs – often due to the negative consequences of caregiving. Learning about the diversity of others’ experiences can positively influence personal decision-making, reduce feelings of isolation, as well as promote adjustment to a personal situation. For caregivers, however, few resources exist that provide reliable information on others’ experiences. We collected the narratives of caregivers’ experiences of caring for someone with a …

Impact Of Health Policy Changes On Emergency Medicine In Maryland Stratified By Socioeconomic Status, Laura Pimentel, David Anderson, Bruce Golden, Edward Wasil, Fermin Barreuto, Jon M. Hirshon
Publications and Research
Introduction: On January 1, 2014, the financing and delivery of healthcare in the state of Maryland (MD) profoundly changed. The insurance provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) began implementation and a major revision of MD’s Medicare waiver ushered in a Global Budget Revenue (GBR) structure for hospital reimbursement. Our objective was to analyze the impact of these policy changes on emergency department (ED) utilization, hospitalization practices, insurance profiles, and professional revenue. We stratified our analysis by the socioeconomic status (SES) of the ED patient population.
Methods: We collected monthly mean data including patient volume, hospitalization percentages, …

"The purpose of this study was to develop and test the effectiveness of a Patient-Centered Outcome Aid (PCOA) compared to a control condition of usual care, as patients chose between IV or IP therapy for advanced ovarian cancer. We developed an internet-based decision aid to improve patient-centered outcomes and tested it within a randomized clinical trial. The purpose of this paper is to describe the clinical trial development and protocol."
Lactose Intolerance: An Overview Of The Facts And Their Implications, 2017 University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Lactose Intolerance: An Overview Of The Facts And Their Implications, Noelle M. Yeo
Honors Theses
Lactose intolerance is often blamed for the symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, gas, abdominal pain, and nausea, that ail many people. Patients often do not seek proper diagnosis from a physician and create their own treatment plans, severely restricting lactose intake, without professional guidance. Even those who do seek the care of a physician find that diagnosis is complicated by less-than ideal testing and confusion due to the symptoms common to many other conditions. The misconceptions and inability to confirm a diagnosis of lactose intolerance can cause nutrient deficiencies in these patients, as well as begin a pattern of unnecessary …
Sex-Dependent Effects Of Ho-1 Deletion From Adipocytes In Mice, 2017 Montclair State University
Sex-Dependent Effects Of Ho-1 Deletion From Adipocytes In Mice, Peter A. Hosick, Mary Frances Weeks, Michael W. Hankins, Kyle H. Moore, David E. Stec
Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education Scholarship and Creative Works
Induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has been demonstrated to decrease body weight and improve insulin sensitivity in several models of obesity in rodents. To further study the role of HO-1 in adipose tissue, we created an adipose-specific HO-1 knockout mouse model. Male and female mice were fed either a control or a high-fat diet for 30 weeks. Body weights were measured weekly and body composition, fasting blood glucose and insulin levels were determined every six weeks. Adipocyte-specific knockout of HO-1 had no significant effect on body weight in mice fed a high-fat diet but increased body weight in female mice …

Humans consider themselves discrete autonomous organisms, but recent research is rapidly strengthening the appreciation that associated microorganisms make essential contributions to human health and well being. Each person is inhabited and also surrounded by his/her own signature microbial cloud. A low diversity of microorganisms is associated with a plethora of diseases, including allergy, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, and even neuropsychiatric disorders. Thus, an interaction of microorganisms with the host immune system is required for a healthy body. Exposure to microorganisms from the moment we are born and appropriate microbiome assembly during childhood are essential for establishing an active …

Participants/respondents: Household key informants. Outcomes: (i) History of illness for household members and (ii) health services utilization in the preceding month, (iii) factors associated …
Continuity Of Care And Shared Decision-Making In Interprofessional Collaborative Maternity Practices In Canada, 2017 The University of Western Ontario
Continuity Of Care And Shared Decision-Making In Interprofessional Collaborative Maternity Practices In Canada, Dorothy Anne M. Malott
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Problem: The number of maternity care providers varies across Canada. Women from rural communities or those marginalized due to physical, psychological or social issues including newcomers, often experience challenges accessing health care (Fraser Health, 2014; Rogers, 2003). Interprofessional collaborative maternity care [IPCMC] has been credited as a means of increasing access and promoting sustainability of services (Miller et al., 2012; Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada, 2008). Midwifery could play a greater role in delivery of services through IPCMC. However, little is known about collaboration in these practices. The purposes of this study are to explore factors influencing enactment …
