Burnout In Medical Assistants In Primary Care: Can Mindfulness Be A Solution?, Natalee D. Calais 2023 Abilene Christian University

Burnout In Medical Assistants In Primary Care: Can Mindfulness Be A Solution?, Natalee D. Calais

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Burnout is described as feelings associated with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization of patients, and a loss of sense of personal accomplishment and it is unique to healthcare workers. Current research highlights this condition among physicians, nurses, and mid-level providers; however, insufficient research exists regarding the effects of burnout on medical assistants. Research led to mindfulness as a possible solution defined as an intentional regulation of attention and awareness of the present moment. This project sought to see if mindfulness practices could be utilized to mitigate the effects of burnout in medical assistants. It was hypothesized that mindfulness could be a solution. …

Exploring Novel Intradialytic Techniques To Identify & Ameliorate Of Hemodialysis-Induced Myocardial Ischemic Injury, Jarrin D. Penny 2023 The University of Western Ontario

Exploring Novel Intradialytic Techniques To Identify & Ameliorate Of Hemodialysis-Induced Myocardial Ischemic Injury, Jarrin D. Penny

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Patients with chronic kidney disease requiring hemodialysis to sustain life have extremely high rates of cardiovascular morbidity/mortality. This is both a consequence of the disease process and treatment. Hemodialysis induces systemic circulatory stress is largely due to the extracorporeal circuit and volume removal. The stress induced by intermitted hemodialysis is repetitive with cumulative cardiovascular effect and is the principal driver of heart failure and sudden death in this vulnerable population. The insults imposed by hemodialysis result in left ventricular regional wall motion abnormalities and lead to myocardial stunning with permanent damage to the vasculature and myocardium. Currently, the adversity caused …

The clinical learning environment is where nursing students gain knowledge, practice skills and become socialized into the nursing profession. Traditionally, in Canada, the clinical learning environment takes place hospital and community settings. The COVID-19 pandemic required quick thinking by nursing faculty to replace on-site clinical hours. Given the quick change-over, there was minimal consideration given to nursing students' perspectives in the planning stages. This study aimed to investigate nursing students' experience in the clinical learning environment before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The perceived quality of students' learning experiences was assessed using the Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher …

Complexities Of Health And Care Worker Migration Pathways And Corresponding International Reporting Requirements, Margaret Walton-Roberts, Ivy Bourgeault, Denise Spitzer

Global Nurse Migration Pathways: A Comparative Project

The increasing complexity of the migration pathways of health and care workers is a critical consideration in the reporting requirements of international agreements designed to address their impacts. There are inherent challenges across these different agreements including reporting functions that are misaligned across different data collection tools, variable capacity of country respondents, and a lack of transparency or accountability in the reporting process. Moreover, reporting processes often neglect to recognize the broader intersectional gendered and racialized political economy of health and care worker migration. We argue for a more coordinated approach to the various international reporting requirements and processes that …

Building Resilience In Graduate Nurses Through Online Virtual Simulation, Robert Grant Harmon 2023 Abilene Christian University

Building Resilience In Graduate Nurses Through Online Virtual Simulation, Robert Grant Harmon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Resilience has become a popular topic in nursing research. Nurses experience enormous stress throughout their training process that extends into their first employment as they transition into practice. Simulation training is a standard for training nurses and for continuing professional education within academia. Most simulation training for nurses is focused on building critical thinking skills. While critical thinking is an essential quality equipping nurses to meet professional demands, resilience is a crucial quality to overcome the stress of both training and practice. Resilience is believed to play an essential role in the retention of new graduate nurses and preventing burnout …

Using Doctoral Education And Research-Based Learning To Advance The Nurse Leader, Kara R. De La Fosse 2023 Minnesota State University, Mankato

Using Doctoral Education And Research-Based Learning To Advance The Nurse Leader, Kara R. De La Fosse

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

Nurse leaders perform in highly autonomous positions in two dimensions; academia, and the clinical setting with the awesome responsibility to serve and protect others. To guide nursing practice, research-based skills are crucial to ensure leadership decisions are founded in evidence-based practice. Random controlled studies are gold-standard in healthcare compared to correlation or descriptive studies and employ a systematic review to strengthen findings (Schmidt & Brown, 2021). Research skills are prominent in numerous components of the leadership scope to perform at a stellar level.

Using Unfolding Case Studies To Develop Critical Thinking In First-Semester Nursing Students, Carol Cook 2023 Gardner-Webb University

Using Unfolding Case Studies To Develop Critical Thinking In First-Semester Nursing Students, Carol Cook

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

There is a crisis in competency among new nurses in the United States. Prelicensure nursing education prepares them to pass the NCLEX-RN, but it does not provide the necessary foundation for sound clinical decision-making. Mistakes in the clinical setting can lead to failure to rescue, resulting in the third leading cause of death: medical error. A radical change is needed to prepare nurses with the clinical judgment skills necessary for patient care. Educators must be mindful of the academic-practice gap and adopt evidence-based improvements, including active learning with unfolding case studies. This quality improvement project involved a four-part unfolding case …

Heparin Vs. Saline: Evaluating Evidence-Based Best Practice For Maintaining Patency Of Implanted Ports, Shannon D. Murdock 2023 University of New Hampshire, Durham

Heparin Vs. Saline: Evaluating Evidence-Based Best Practice For Maintaining Patency Of Implanted Ports, Shannon D. Murdock

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background Implanted ports are frequently used for central venous access in the adult oncology population. Maintaining patency of these ports is important for continuing uninterrupted treatment and supportive care for oncologic patients. Historically, heparin solution has been used as a locking solution for implanted ports to prevent occlusion. However, evidence shows that 0.9% sodium chloride (normal saline or NS) as a lock solution is equally effective as heparin solution at maintaining implanted port patency and poses less risk to patients.

Local Problem In an ambulatory adult oncology clinic serving Seacoast New Hampshire, a gap was identified between clinical practice where …

A Roadmap To Safer Hyaluronic Acid Injections, Mandi Lonergan

Master's Projects

Non surgical aesthetic treatments have become increasingly more popular in the United States (2020 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report 2021). Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the second most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatment behind Botulinum toxin injections (The Aesthetic Society, 2021). The increased use of these fillers has led to increased rates of complications With the release of new long lasting fillers in 2014, providers began to see an increase in delayed onset nodules (DON). A DON is considered in the aesthetic field to be a nodule that occurs 30 days to years after filler injection (Convery et al., 2021). A …

Prospective Generation Z Nurses: Expectation Of The Workforce In Connotation To The Great Resignation, Amelia Borders

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Great Resignation has left an impact on the entirety of the American workforce. Coupled with the burnout rates caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare systems have been trying to find solutions to inhibit the nurse shortage. While solutions that focus on symptoms of the problem may work for a short period of time, hospitals will continue to encounter issues with staffing nurses and will need to find a new solution (Laskowskil-Jones & Castner, 2022). A possible solution would be for hospitals to recruit and retain prospective Gen Z nurses. In a quantitative study completed at a single university in …

Heated High Flow Oxygen Therapy Management Of Respiratory, Swallowing/Dysphagia And Nutrition Needs, Jenelle Overgaard 2023 CentraCare Health

Heated High Flow Oxygen Therapy Management Of Respiratory, Swallowing/Dysphagia And Nutrition Needs, Jenelle Overgaard

Nursing Posters

Problem

  • Patients diagnosed with COVID-19 pose challenges for oxygenation. Often requiring heated high flow oxygen therapy (HHFOT) for days to weeks, with literflow commonly over 40 L/min with maximum of 60 L/min.
  • There is minimal research on aspiration risk at higher literflow, therefore practice included decreasing liter flow to 20 L/min for oral intake was standard.
  • During oral intake, with literflow decreased to 20 L/min, patients' oxygen saturations would quickly trend down.
  • Alarms indicating low saturation would create anxiety, cause patients to eat faster potentially increasing risk for aspiration.

Solution

  • For adult inpatients meeting criteria, increase maximum literflow allowed during …
