Al-Azhar International Medical Journal

Background; The placenta is around 3 cm thick at term when the cord is inserted in the third trimester. To measure placental thickness transabdominally, one must position an ultrasound transducer perpendicular to the placenta's plane. Aim and objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between placental thickness and foetal weight.

Patients and methods: 300 pregnant women participated in this cross-sectional prospective study, which was carried out at the Al-Hussein University Hospital's outpatient gynaecology clinic.

Results: The mean Placental thickness (mm) was 31.89 ± 7.50, and the mean fetal weight (gms) was 2272.91 ± 1379.07. The APGAR …

Comparative Study Between Immediate Versus Post Puerperium Intrauterine Contraceptive Device Insertion During Caesarean Section, Mohamed Mohamed Gebreel, Samir Khamis Galal, Tamer Mohsen Elnahas, Hany Mohammed Mohammed Abo Hamed 2023 Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine for boys, Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt

Comparative Study Between Immediate Versus Post Puerperium Intrauterine Contraceptive Device Insertion During Caesarean Section, Mohamed Mohamed Gebreel, Samir Khamis Galal, Tamer Mohsen Elnahas, Hany Mohammed Mohammed Abo Hamed

Al-Azhar International Medical Journal

Background: An intrauterine device (IUD) is a reliable reversible method of birth control. We assessed the effectiveness and security of cesarean delivery immediate postplacental IUD implantation. A long-term, reversible method of birth control is the copper intrauterine device, or IUD. Typically, copper IUDs are constructed of T-shaped plastic with certain areas exposed copper. Women had few long-term choices for safe, effective birth control prior to the development of the first IUDs. These largely relied on oral birth control pills and barrier techniques, which were only effective when taken appropriately and regularly.

Aim: The study's objective was to evaluate the effectiveness …

Objective: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) routine diagnostic procedures often include computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Histological confirmation by pleural biopsy is required for the MPM diagnosis to be finalized.

Aim of our study: to compare among findings of chest CT, MRI and medical thoracoscopy (MT) for MPM identification.

Patients and methods: Fifty patients (30 Males and 20 females) with definitive MPM diagnosis after (MT) biopsy, underwent chest CT and MRI chest.

Results: There was statistically significant parameters for MRI versus CT for pleural thickening, it was 64% versus 44% (p= 0.044). Post contrast enhancement in MRI was …

Protein S In Coagulation And Inflammation, Martha Mega Silvia Sim 2023 University of Kentucky

Protein S In Coagulation And Inflammation, Martha Mega Silvia Sim

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Protein S (PS) is a key regulator, which links inflammation and coagulation and performs multiple proposed functions in both processes. PS exists in the blood as a free soluble form (~40%), bound to complement component 4b-binding protein/ C4BP (~60%), and packaged in platelet α-granules (~2.5%). Subendothelial tissue factor (TF), upon exposure to blood, initiates coagulation, a proteolytic cascade which results in the activation of thrombin, the enzyme responsible for formation of a fibrin clot. PS is a critical anticoagulant that inhibits multiple steps of this process. Only the free fraction of PS has full anticoagulant properties, as C4BP blocks this …

Somatic mutations are recognized as an important prognostic factor in chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). However, limited data are available regarding their impact on outcomes after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). In this registry analysis conducted in collaboration with the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplantation Registry database/sample repository, we identified 313 adult patients with CMML (median age: 64 years, range, 28- 77) who underwent allogeneic HCT during 2001-2017 and had an available biospecimen in the form of a peripheral blood sample obtained prior to the start of conditioning. In multivariate analysis, a CMML-specific prognostic scoring system (CPSS) score of …

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

Background: Fetal exposure to maternal anxiety is associated with low birth weight and maternal stress may be led to constriction of uterine arteries. This study compared the relation of anxiety and uterine artery doppler flow indices in pregnant women with the high and low-risk of Down syndrome.

Materials and methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted among pregnant women in the second trimester that were classified as having a high or low risk according to their prenatal aneuploidy screening outcome. The high risk group underwent amniocentesis. Anxiety was initially assessed using the Spielberger State-Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and uterine artery blood …

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound Li-Rads: A Pictorial Review, Osama Mahmoud, Ajay Makkena, Corinne E. Wessner, Ji-Bin Liu, John Eisenbrey, Andrej Lyshchik

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

The American College of Radiology has implemented the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) to help detect, interpret, and guide the management of suspected lesions on surveillance imaging for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with cirrhosis. The classification of indeterminate nodules with a grading algorithm can be used for multiple imaging modalities (US, CT, and MRI) and incorporates multiple imaging features to appropriately classify observations with different likelihood of being HCC. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) LI-RADS has been fully implemented since 2017. The aim of this pictorial article is to provide a comprehensive review of CEUS LI-RADS utilization, discuss its …
