Methods: Data was collected from surveys handed in 3 consecutive months; June, July and August of 2013. Sixteen questions were selected from HCAHPS that were appraised to be relevant …

Wearable Sensors And Total Knee Arthroplasty: Assessing Quantitative Function To Improve The Patient Experience, Megan Fennema 2018 The University of Western Ontario

Wearable Sensors And Total Knee Arthroplasty: Assessing Quantitative Function To Improve The Patient Experience, Megan Fennema

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative disease for which the only long-term solution is total knee arthroplasty (TKA), though many patients are not satisfied with their TKA. Satisfaction in TKA patients is not well understood. Subjective questionnaires and objective functional tests have been previously used to assess TKA outcomes, but both have disadvantages. Wearable sensors have facilitated affordable biomechanical measurement in OA and TKA populations. The objective of this work was to use wearable sensors alongside functional tests with TKA patients to identify quantitative function that related to subjective function and satisfaction. A wearable sensor-setup was validated before implementation in …

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Background: Orthopedic surgeries are usually associated with excessive blood loss which leads surgeons to overestimate need for blood transfusions and over ordering of blood. The cross matched blood, when not used, leads to the wastage of blood bank resources in terms of time, money and manpower. The objective of this study was to investigate the compliance to previously proposed MSBOS and to provide updated recommendations for all orthopedic procedures.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted between 1st June 2015 and 31st May 2016. Patients admitted to the orthopedic surgery service for whom blood products were requested were included. Cross Match/Transfusion …

The Impact Of Free Radical Stabilization Techniques On In Vivo Property Changes In Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene Acetabular Liners, Michael M. Decker .

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) was introduced into total hip arthroplasty (THA) to reduce long-term wear-related complications. However, HXLPE production and in vivo oxidation can alter mechanical behavior. Mechanical failure of HXLPE liners at the implant rim have been reported. The purpose of this thesis is to determine if thermal free radical stabilization techniques used in HXLPE production alter the mechanical properties, physical properties and oxidative stability of liner rims after extended in vivo time.

Retrieved remelted, single annealed and sequentially annealed HXLPE liner rims were mechanically tested using a validated microindentation technique. Oxidation and crystalline phase composition were measured. Results …

Introduction: Injuries are the second most common cause of disability, the fifth most common cause of healthy years of life lost per 1000 people and unfortunately 90% of mortality takes place in low-to middle-income countries. Trauma registries guide policymakers and health care providers in decision making in terms of resource allocation as well as enhancing trauma care outcomes. Furthermore data from these registries inform policy makers to decrease the rate of death and disability occurring as a result of injuries. We present our experience in setting up an orthopedic trauma registry and the first short term follow-up of radiological outcomes. …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

The Venus de Milo, an ancient Greek statue, has been viewed as one of the most celebrated pieces of art in Western culture. It was sculpted during the Hellenistic period between 150 and 50 BC and is believed to be the work of Alexandros of Antioch. The sculpture is thought to depict Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. When assembled, the two halves of the sculpture meet in an almost horizontal line that is purposefully obscured by a roll of garment around the hips. It has been noted that the midline of the statue's face is displaced slightly. …
