Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Vitreoretinal Lymphoma (VRL) is a rare ocular pathology that is notorious for mimicking chronic uveitis, which is a seemingly benign condition in comparison. The most common form of VRL is the diffuse large B-cell type, and there has been a high mortality rate. This dismal prognosis can be improved significantly if the disease is diagnosed early, but until now there is no consensus on an appropriate diagnostic algorithm. We conducted a retrospective search of PubMed Central® and analyzed results from thirty-three studies that were published between 2011–2021. The chosen studies incorporated some popular testing tools for VRL, and our analyses …

Our subjective visual experiences involve complex interaction between our eyes, our brain, and the surrounding world. It gives us the sense of sight, color, stereopsis, distance, pattern recognition, motor coordination, and more. The increasing ubiquity of gaze-aware technology brings with it the ability to track gaze and pupil measures with varying degrees of fidelity. With this in mind, a review that considers the various gaze measures becomes increasingly relevant, especially considering our ability to make sense of these signals given different spatio-temporal sampling capacities. In this paper, we selectively review prior work on eye movements and pupil measures. We first …

A Proposed Method To Verify Physician Visual Estimation Of Intraoperative Corneal Edema From Refractive Measurement Images During Cataract Surgery, Karalee Corley 2022 Claremont Colleges

A Proposed Method To Verify Physician Visual Estimation Of Intraoperative Corneal Edema From Refractive Measurement Images During Cataract Surgery, Karalee Corley

CMC Senior Theses

A patient’s resultant vision quality in a restorative Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS) can be fine tuned via an intraoperative measurement of refractive power and axis of astigmatism in the aphakic state. Standard preoperative measurements often disagree with intraoperative measurements (Optiwave Refractive Analysis; Alcon, Inc.) on account of the inclusion or exclusion of posterior corneal curvature, leaving the ultimate lens selection to physician discretion. One additional suggested cause of disagreement is swelling at the corneal incision site (Corley and Carmack 2020).The following proposes a method to verify visual estimation of intraoperative corneal swelling from 2D gray-scale images collected during …

Does The Novel Coronavirus Use The Ocular Surface As An Entrance Into The Body Or As An Infection Site?, Remzi Karadag, Alp Kayiran, Christopher J Rapuano

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

This study attempts to review whether the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is transmitted through the ocular surface and examine the symptoms and signs of ocular disease. Considering that COVID-19 is transmitted by airborne droplets and close contact with infected individuals, we will also review the conditions to which eye clinics and ophthalmologists should pay attention to prevent the transmission of the disease. Although some researchers have argued that COVID-19 transmission cannot occur through the ocular surface, most of them are of the opinion that the ocular surface is a potential pathway of transmission. Until date, ocular signs and symptoms have been …

Stroboscopic Augmented Reality As An Approach To Mitigate Gravitational Transition Effects During Interplanetary Spaceflight, Ethan Waisberg, Joshua Ong, Nasif Zaman, Sharif Amit Kamran, Andrew G. Lee, Alireza Tavakkoli

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

During interplanetary spaceflight, periods of extreme gravitational transitions will occur such as transitions between hypergravity, hypogravity, and microgravity. Following gravitational transitions, rapid sensorimotor adaptation or maladaptation may occur which can affect gaze control and weaken dynamic visual acuity in astronauts. A reduction in dynamic visual acuity during spaceflight could possibly impact or impair mission critical activities (e.g., control of extraterrestrial machinery/vehicles and other important tasks). Stroboscopic visual training is an emerging visual tool that has been terrestrially observed to enhance visual performance and perception by performing tasks under conditions of intermittent vision. This technique has also been seen to increase …

Typical Sounding Atypical Diagnostic Conundrum -- A Rare Case Of Mycobacterium Avium Complex (Mac) Presenting With Multiple Cranial Nerve Involvement, Ashwini Kini, Karl Echiverri, Edward J. Escott, Padmaja Sudhakar

Neurology Faculty Publications

Background

MAC infections rarely cause symptomatic systemic infection in immunocompetent healthy individuals. This case brings to light a rare such presentation that gives us a learning point about keeping a strong pre-clinical suspicion for this condition in patients whom lung imaging reveals suspicious cavitary lesions. Starting empiric therapy while awaiting culture results may be considered after weighing risks and benefits in order to achieve the morbidity and mortality associated with the disease.

Case report

A 54 year-old white male presented for evaluation of progressively worsening vertigo, imbalance, vertical diplopia, facial diplegia, bilateral hyperacusis followed by hearing loss, dysphagia, and dysarthria …
