Investigating The Therapeutic Potential Of Targeting Lrrc15 In Endometrial Cancer, Christopher Pathoulas

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecological malignancy and accounts for 6% of all cancers in women. In 2018, there were an estimated 63,280 new cases of endometrial cancer resulting in 11,350 deaths. In advanced stages, aggressive forms of endometrial cancer are able to invade the peritoneum and metastasize to the omentum and bowel. Shridhar et al. have identified leucine rich repeat containing 15 (LRRC15), a protein involved in cell adhesion and interactions with the extracellular matrix (ECM), as a potential therapeutic target due to its significantly higher expression in ovarian cancer tumors that have metastasized to the omentum and …

Dietary Polyphenols, Resveratrol And Pterostilbene Exhibit Antitumor Activity On An Hpv E6-Positive Cervical Cancer Model: An In Vitro And In Vivo Analysis, Kaushiki Chatterjee, Sumit Mukherjee, Jonathan Vanmanen, Probal Banerjee, Jimmie E. Fata

Publications and Research

Human papilloma virus (HPV)-induced cervical cancer is one of themost frequent cancers in women residing in underdeveloped countries. Natural compounds like polyphenols continue to be of scientific interest as non-toxic effective alternative treatments. Our previous work showed the efficacy of two polyphenols, resveratrol, and pterostilbene on human HeLa cells. Here we explored the in vitro anti-cancer activity and in vivo anti-tumor potential of these two structurally similar compounds on HPV oncogene E6 and E7 positive murine TC1 cells. In vitro analysis confirmed the cytotoxic potential of both resveratrol and pterostilbene compounds with each having a low IC50 value and each …

KRAS-activation mutations occur in 25% to 40% of lung adenocarcinomas and are a known mechanism of epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor (EGFRI) resistance. There are currently no targeted therapies approved specifically for the treatment of KRAS-active non–small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). Attempts to target mutant KRAS have failed in clinical studies leaving no targeted therapy option for these patients. To circumvent targeting KRAS directly, we hypothesized that targeting proteins connected to KRAS function rather than targeting KRAS directly could induce cell death in KRAS-active NSCLC cells. To identify potential targets, we leveraged 2 gene expression data sets derived from NSCLC …

Hot Snare Vs. Cold Snare Polypectomy For Endoscopic Removal Of 4-10mm Colorectal Polyps During Colonoscopy: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Controlled Studies, Mahendran Jayaraj 2019 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Hot Snare Vs. Cold Snare Polypectomy For Endoscopic Removal Of 4-10mm Colorectal Polyps During Colonoscopy: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Controlled Studies, Mahendran Jayaraj

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Introduction In recent years, cold snare polypectomy (CSP) has increasingly been used over hot snare polypectomy (HSP) for the removal of colorectal polyps (4 – 10 mm in size). However, the optimal technique (CSP vs. HSP), in terms of complete polyp resection and complications, is uncertain. Our aim was to compare incomplete resection rate (IRR) of polyps and complications using CSP vs. HSP. Methods Randomized controlled studies (RCTs) comparing CSP and HSP for removal of 4 – 10 mm colorectal polyps were considered. Studies were included in the analysis if they obtained biopsy specimens from the resection margin to confirm …

The Role Of Ros In The Progression And Treatment Of Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer, Dannah R. Miller 2019 University of Nebraska Medical Center

The Role Of Ros In The Progression And Treatment Of Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer, Dannah R. Miller

Theses & Dissertations

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in U.S. men, primarily due to the development of castration-resistant (CR) prostate cancer (PCa), of which there are no effective treatment options. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays a critical role in prostate carcinogenesis, including the progression of the CR PCa phenotype. ROS regulates both cell proliferation and apoptosis; a moderate increase in ROS can promote proliferation; however, a substantial rise in ROS levels will result in apoptosis. Oxidase p66Shc is elevated in clinical PCa cells and has been associated with a metastatic phenotype of CR PCa cells, promoting PCa cell …

Framework For Algorithmically Optimizing Longitudinal Health Outcomes: Examples In Cancer Radiotherapy And Occupational Radiation Protection, Lydia Joyce Wilson 2019 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Framework For Algorithmically Optimizing Longitudinal Health Outcomes: Examples In Cancer Radiotherapy And Occupational Radiation Protection, Lydia Joyce Wilson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Background: Advancements in the treatment of non-infectious disease have enabled survival rates to steadily increase in recent decades (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, and cancer). Epidemiological studies have revealed that the treatments for these diseases can have life-threatening and/or life–altering effects. Thus, realizing the full beneficial potential of advanced treatments necessitates new tools to algorithmically consider all major components of the health outcome, including benefit and detriment. The goal of this dissertation was to develop a framework for improving projected health outcomes following planned radiation exposures in consideration of all beneficial and detrimental, early and late, and fatal and non-fatal …

Occult Renal Cell Carcinoma Presenting As A Palpable Supraclavicular Virchow's Node, Luke Perry, Jandie Schwartz, Gus Slotman, Omar Al Ustwani, Nandini Kulkarni 2019 Rowan University

Occult Renal Cell Carcinoma Presenting As A Palpable Supraclavicular Virchow's Node, Luke Perry, Jandie Schwartz, Gus Slotman, Omar Al Ustwani, Nandini Kulkarni

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Occult papillary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a rare disease process in which there is evidence of metastatic kidney cancer, but no primary kidney tumor can be found on physical exam or imaging. The papillary subtype of RCC accounts for 10-15% of RCC’s. These lesions infrequently present as occult disease. A Virchow’s node can be positive for multiple cancer types, most notably gastric cancer, but also gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, testicular, and prostate cancer. We describe a case of occult papillary renal cell carcinoma diagnosed by biopsy of a Virchow’s node.

Recurrent Renal Cell Carcinoma Post Radical Nephrectomy: A Case Report, Amarnath Polepalle D.O., Neethi Dasu D.O., Adam Freilich D.O., Jayram Krishnan D.O.

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

This is a case of a 73-year-old Caucasian male presenting with an asymptomatic right adrenal mass.

Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) constitutes 80 to 85% of primary renal neoplasms. At presentation, up to 25% of patients with RCC will have evidence of metastases or locally advanced disease. [1] Patients will rarely present with any symptoms since the majority of patients are incidentally diagnosed due to radiologic procedures performed for other indications. RCC is considered the most lethal of urologic cancers because a patient without intervention who has stage IV metastatic disease has a 5-year survival rate of 23% in comparison to …

Atypical Presentation Of Stemi With Cardiac Tamponade Related To Malignancy, Matthew J. Johnson, Rohan Penmetcha 2019 Rowan University

Atypical Presentation Of Stemi With Cardiac Tamponade Related To Malignancy, Matthew J. Johnson, Rohan Penmetcha

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Cardiac tamponade and myocardial infarction are rare as the initial presentation of a malignancy. Here, we describe a case with an atypical presentation of a myocardial infarction due to a thrombus in the right coronary artery occurring in the setting of a pericardial effusion causing tamponade physiology related to malignancy. We present this unique case of myocardial infarction and cardiac tamponade as this was not caused by a type-A aortic dissection. In conclusion, we suggest that malignancy be considered in the differential diagnosis when these findings present together.

A Mathematical Investigation On Tumor-Immune Dynamics: The Impact Of Vaccines On The Immune Response, Jonathan Quinonez, Neethi Dasu, Mahboobi Qureshi 2019 Larkin Hospital (Florida)

A Mathematical Investigation On Tumor-Immune Dynamics: The Impact Of Vaccines On The Immune Response, Jonathan Quinonez, Neethi Dasu, Mahboobi Qureshi

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Mathematical models analyzing tumor-immune interactions provide a framework by which to address specific scenarios in regard to tumor-immune dynamics. Important aspects of tumor-immune surveillance to consider is the elimination of tumor cells from a host’s cell-mediated immunity as well as the implications of vaccines derived from synthetic antigen. In present studies, our mathematical model examined the role of synthetic antigen to the strength of the immune system. The constructed model takes into account accepted knowledge of immune function as well as prior work done by de Pillis et al. All equations describing tumor-immune growth, antigen presentation, immune response, and interaction …

A Rare Case Of A Non- Functioning Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor, Yaser Khalid, Neethi Dasu, Richard Gordon 2019 Rowan University

A Rare Case Of A Non- Functioning Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor, Yaser Khalid, Neethi Dasu, Richard Gordon

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNET) are very rare and represent about 1–2% of all pancreatic tumors. Non-functional PNET (NF-PNET) is incidentally discovered in most cases. Most NF-PNETs are found at an advanced stage because patients are mostly asymptomatic. We present a case of 32-yr-old female who initially presented with increasing abdominal girth, decreased mobility, and lower extremity swelling up to the hip and was found to have an advanced NF-PNET with metastatic disease to the pelvis and liver. There have been few studies directed toward early detection and management; Computed tomography (CT) is the imaging modality of choice as well as …
